The Federal Government has recently banned private practice commonly known as “PP” for Medical Doctors working in the public hospitals in Nigeria; a move that will not only affect the doctors but can actually disrupt the services in the health sector in the country.


mysalaryscale.com recently published an article explaining the salaries of Medical Doctors in Nigeria – given the herculean tasks and responsibilities that rely on the shoulders of an average doctor in Nigeria, it’s not farfetched why they should have their earnings on a totally different salary scale and structure when compared to that of other professions of human endeavors. Starting from getting a university degree, it’s a common trend for a student studying medicine and surgery or dentistry to spend more years than his or her contemporaries studying other courses in art, engineering, and business. This is probably the first reason they should earn more than others.

Secondly, for most institutions, the college of medicine uses a totally different calendar from that of other disciplines in the school. This is more like setting themselves apart from the trends of others. Distinguishing these medical students from their peers and making them stay in school to study those very big books is aimed at making them unbreakable. Those who cannot cope with these rigorous activities often get relocated to other disciplines or even withdrawn from the institution. This soul-breaking procedure adopted by the medical profession sets them apart from other professions.

Now, when they start working, generally they tend to earn more than an average businessman, an engineer or a lawyer. But the reason for this goes beyond the university curriculum and structure of the profession. They primarily earn more because they deal with lives – human lives. They involve in various procedures on a daily basis that decide whether a patient lives or dies. The degree of risk and importance associated with this profession is what basically makes them earn more than other professions on the average. In finance, the higher the risk, the higher the return.

Salary Structure of Doctors in Nigeria

In a survey carried out by MySalaryScale.com in 2017, salary data for different professions were gathered all across Nigeria. It was gathered that a medical doctor earns an average salary of #250,000 per month. This excludes other financial benefits and multiple jobs earnings. The survey also found out that the salary increases with the years of experience in the field. While an entry level doctor earns an average of #170,000, an average middle-level medical doctor earns an average of #270,000.

However, apart from the basic salary, there are other financial benefits attached to working as a doctor in Nigeria. According to the Consolidated Medical Salary Scale (CONMESS), other financial benefits of doctors in Nigeria are as follows;

Specialist Allowance

The specialist allowance applies only to medical/dental officers who are employed as consultants.

Call Duty Allowance

Call duty allowance is payable to medical/dental officers in federal hospitals and clinics. It is to be earned only when an officer would have actually performed call duty in accordance with an existing call duty roster.

Health Professional Non-Clinical Duty Allowance

This allowance is payable to medical/dental officers deployed to render health-related services in the federal ministry of health and other federal health institutions.

Clinical Duty Allowance

This allowance is payable to honorary consultants, who are employed as academic staff in universities but render clinical services to teaching/specialist hospitals.

Teaching Allowance

This allowance is payable to federal medical/dental officers who are engaged in the teaching of medical doctors or other health professionals in training and teaching/ specialist hospitals.

Hazard Allowance

Hazard allowance is also paid across the board to all medical/ dental officers.

Rural posting allowance

Federal medical/dental officers who are stationed in rural communities are also paid this allowance at the rates specified. The federal ministry of health and the national salaries incomes and wages commission jointly determines the designation of a health station as rural.

Multiple Job Earnings of Doctors

Apart from all the benefits listed above for a doctor in Nigeria, those involved in multiple jobs also earn additional. Now, various professions offer the job holders the opportunity to work in more than one firm at a time or involve in two or more tasks simultaneously. The medical profession is one of these professions with the leverage of having multiple jobs holding. For example, most medical doctors who work in government hospitals may also own a private hospital, work as a doctor or a consultant in other private clinics.

The implication of this to doctors’ salary is that it gives them the opportunity to earn more than the average salary of a regular doctor. So, while the research shows #247,000 as doctors’ average salary, with other allowances, it still does not take into account the other earnings they get from working in other hospitals. The amount being earn here depends on the time put, the status of the doctor, and so many other factors. Doctors who have multiple job holdings may generally earn more salary than the average rate.

Wen she eventually did, his room was on the third floor of a particular Hosp where he works. As they were gisting they called him for patients like 5times. She immediately knew she was with the wrong guy. Big shame really.

Private pay from 6Oooo-150000 for 0-5 years experience and jobs are not easily available...

all these challenges will force doctors to think outside the box......the truth is getting a government job as doctor with having strong connection is really difficult

How can you earn the same salary with a US based Doctor when your entire school fees in a federal uni for 7 years cannot pay half the tuition for a 1 year programme in the US?

I'd rather we compare Doctors salaries with other professions IN NIGERIA. It is true that the average Doctors' salary is so poor when compared with those in the US. However, the salary of a Nigerian based teacher, nurse, engineer, etc., aren't anything different. Some teachers here earn less than N30k/monthly.

It is time to face the reality, Nigeria is an economically disadvantage nation. We display nothing but pathological m. a.d ness when we compare the salaries of Nigerian based doctors with those in the U.S. Salary may be lower in Nigeria, but the cost of living is also lower. Many Doctors can comfortably pay their rent with a month salary.

@OP, please try to be factual when you post online for the world. Most of what you have there is exaggeration. I know drs with more than 10yrs experience who earn below 230/month with all the other "addendum" you described onboard. Revisit your sources or check with the banks or drs themselves.

There are different cadres and last on average 6-8 years, Some are as short as 4 years

a) Junior registrars (2 ans half years) salary starts at N 350,000 currently (was less than this in the past) after the part 1 exams they progress to senior registrar
b) Senior registrar whose salary currently starts arouund #500,000. After part 2exams becomes a consultant who is either released or retained by his institution
c) Consultants are appointed by the hosp. They are at the peak of their career. Their salary is #800,000 for the new ones and around #1,200,000 for the senior ones. This is why JOHESU members wants to become consultants
so much. In addition to this pay, this are the groups that can consult in different hospital or have private and big shorts patients that they attend to. Depending on how well connected a consultant a is they can earn more than 5times the figures quoted above

5. The public health physicians can be thru masters in public health or residency in public health. I was told a story in medical school of a top govt official during the Gen Abdulsalam Abubarka regime who went to South Africa for a relative's brain, on arrival he was told that they are waiting for the surgeon from Nigeria (prof. B.B. Shehu). The surgery went very fine and afterwards the govt official was ashamed. This led to building of a neurosurgery centre in Sokoto state.

We can make Nigeria work if we can only have faith on ourselves

I'll bet that you were really feeling smart while typing this. west Africa is currently 115,000, National is 75 (updates courses for both are 40, you will travel and lodge in the state where your closest exam centre is) and the pass rate is pitiable. Very few people will dole out such without preparing adequately.

Many junior regs except in some Federal centres earn just above 200 or more.

Loool, come to ubth, they pay interns between 150 and 170K, depending on their mood. There was even a particular month they paid H/Os 50K, it's so depressing. But I hear they pay very well in the north, I guess that's the goal

Who said what OP posted was not true? With entry point of doctors being level 12, they earn as much as that with those who do multiple jobs also known as PP plus those that are keen on collecting 10% from pharmaceutical reps and private lab owners. They earn this much yet you see them opening thier mouth to shout marginalisation and wants to down tool. Yet they are the head of very health institutions, they head all the juicy departments and who is now marginalising who? They divert patients to thier private practice, they engage in polypharmacy just to sell for a Pharma rep in exchange for 10 %, they send patients to go to do lab tests mostly not relevant just to get commission from the labs. God is watching them in 3D.
