shocked

The only thing I remember about this man is his role in the 1967-1970 civil war.

At 83 General Gowon is now seeing the war in another light.

In all his recent interviews, I can feel the weight of the guilt he is carrying at this point in his lifetime. The guilt that he oversaw the War. That he made sure it was fought in the most cruel of way.
I feel sorry for him knowing that every night he still has that nightmare - the blood flowing, the rapes, the hunger, the diseases, the death of friends and fellow fine soldiers. Forget about the political talks of one Nigeria, I believe he will rather take the sadness of a divided country than the overwhelming guilt of leading a senseless civil war.

Maybe he could have handled the situation in a better way, maybe there could have been a genuine dialogue or at least a sincere will to carry out the Aburi pact (Whatever it was) but then he was a youth, an Army General/Head of State at 32 and he must act decisively. He may have acted so fast.

Now he may have seen the light. He may have embraced the one true religion - the teachings of Christ. He may have embarked on so many humanitarian activities but he has not overcome that guilt.

I pray for him. To find the forgiveness he internally seeks and the peace that cones thereof.

And you think you are immortal right .
Everybody will die, whether old or young.
The fact that you are young doesn't mean that the older person will die before you.
Be wise.

Happy Birthday Jack...you must be regretting why you reneged on the Aburi accord and plunged Nigeria into a civil war that has led the foundation for the unavoidable disintegration not to far from now.

I feel pity for you always cause the muslim north that used you have now turned your state into a killing field.
oga this is not the right place at discuss politics, he did not understand the terms of the aburi accords hence he had to renege from signing it, had he he agreed he would have jeopardized the unity of the country .The accord wanted the country to turn into a confederate state rather than a federal state hence making the regions stronger than the federal government.
As for the issue of him being used and dumped he became the president at a very precarious time, he is Christian from a minority tribe that was selected in order to placate other Nigerians so as not view the as a Hausa Fulani kingdom you remember it was after July coup.

The mistakes of a leader are terrible indeed. A general's mistakes get people killed. Lots of people.

Even years after he made them.

Try to be matured next time. Maturity, even pretended maturity, will look good on you.

Nope. Gowon's mistakes. Ojukwu made mistakes too, but he was forced into it by the fallout from the '66 coup. He spent a good deal of time trying to prevent such happening again.

You get your facts right. Gowon became C-i-C after Ironsi was killed. What did he do to stop killing of Igbos in the north?

Do you know the facts about Aburi and what happened afterwards?

At the end of the war, who paid out £20 to all Igbos irrespective of their station before the war?

Who sat in office for years instead of having elections?

I'm not Igbo. I'm Yoruba, but tribe doesn't stand in the way of the truth.

The man that brought an avoidable war to biafra.
He couldn't stop the pogorm in Nigeria, became a pawn in the hands of northern elders and the selfish British administration that were only interested in Nigerian oil and resources.
He was mislead and consequently turned down the Aburi accord aggrements. He equally turned down a few peace negotiation meetings outside Nigeria and established an air/sea blockade of Biafra which resulted in severe starvation and death of civilians. Thanks to the caritas, catholic missionaries and the rest who flew in food and medical supplies through Uli airstrip thererby preventing the death of many more.
He couldn't control the military that bombed civilian spaces resulting in death of innocent people. A man that didn't keep to his 3Rs declaration after the war but paid 20pounds to the Biafrans irrespective of their bank account contents. Igbos seriously deserve some credit. Rising with just 20pounds is not an easy feat!
How does he feel now that the Nigeria he fought to put together is now a corrupt, chaotic and retrogressive nation maimed by years of sectional leadership?
There is no point patching a country built on inequality and injustice.

My brother, the recent call for restructuring,is it a call for confederation or for unitary system? The Aburi accord was the template that could have prevented the civil, for you to say that a UK trained Soldier did not understand the accord is unbelivable.
