I'm posting this as a response to this thread: https://www.nairaland.com/4070239/why-immorality-increase-todays-world

Let me jump right in. I don't really think immorality is on the increase or that generally, the world is worse than it has been. History tells us that what we call immorality has pretty much always been in existence (and at levels that shocked the people of each generation) and at each generation tends to think it is worse than the previous one. Take things like prostitution, homosexuality, bestiality, etc and check your history books (history books, not holy books!); you'll find that they have always been with us. As one joke has it, as soon as man realized he could stick his d-ick in a woman and feel good, he probably also realized he could stick it in other places and also feel good. The reasons we THINK they are on the increase are:

1) It's much easier to spread news about something happening now than before. Now once there is an earthquake or tsunami or war breaks out or someone does something we think is out of the ordinary, it is broadcast around the world in a fraction of a second. Step back one millennium ago: were there no earthquakes, wars, violent crimes or crazy people? Of course there were but either large swathes of the earth had not been populated to witness some of the natural disasters or there was no medium through which the news could be spread far and wide at little cost. Also, most communities and civilizations were largely isolated from each other so if one man murders his family and commits suicide in Egypt, trust that the Incas wouldn't have heard about it. Till today, scientists are discovering civilizations that disappeared without a trace that even history has no record of them. But if Lagos or Sydney were to suddenly disappear from the surface of the earth now, trust that the whole world would know about the event within minutes if not seconds. We think more is happening now because we hear more, not necessarily because more is actually happening now compared with before.

2) Laws, Laws, Laws: If there is a constant that everyone has ro deal with today from birth to death, it's laws and government. These ensure that things are done properly and kept in order and people don't go around doing unthinkable things to other people. And it is the existence of these laws that also make it seem like things are getting worse now compared with before. As recently as centuries ago, one man could just wake up one morning, take his sword or spear and go on a killing spree in his immediate community - then take control of the community and declare himself king without suffering any repercussions for his one-man genocide. However, due to existing laws today, it's a criminal offense to do such a thing and doing it comes with consequences. So were there no violent crimes in the past? Of course there were - probably even more than now but because it wasn't exactly legal (due to, y'know, there being no laws) and the fact that a lot of them went unrecorded, we assume they simply didn't happen back then and thus think they are happening a whole lot more now than before which really isn't the case. The fact is that there are more laws now than ever before. As an adage goes, the more glass you have, the higher your chances of breaking some of them. Same thing with laws: whether legal, religious or otherwise - the more laws there are, the higher the chances that these laws would be broken leading to a seeming increase in inappropriate behavior while the fact is that what was once appropriate is now inappropriate. Doesn't mean it didn't use to happen frequently. If anything, laws have tried to ensure that their occurrence is reduced.

3) Population BOOM! Say, if a third of a community of 10,000 are killed by natural disasters, violent crime and diseases don't you think the number of dead would be less than a community of 100,000 affected by the same things at the same fraction? The fact is that there are more people on the earth now than before, meaning more people to have premarital sex, more people to be affected by crime (as well as more criminals), more people to be affected by natural disasters and more people to be affected by disease. That's why when we compare the numbers from the past to the numbers of the present, it would appear more people are are dying now than before. Technically that is true but when you compare the ratio of dying people to survivors, you'll find that things things have remained largely the same or even improved. Look at the flip side too: the fact that there are more people also means there are more survivors now than before if we want to just compare numbers. Let's say a flood killed a fourth of a community of 1000 people in 1850 - that's 250 dead with 750 surviving. What about of a flood also killed a fourth of a community of 10,000 in 1950? We have 2500 dead (more dead) and 7500 survivors (a lot more survivors). We don't even get to hear of epidemic wiping out whole populations as much as before due to advancements in science and medicine.

Let's face it, the world is getting better if anything. Life expectancy is increased, there is more order in society, it's even easier to monitor the activities of people hence preventing them from engaging in undesirable behavior. Worst case scenario, the world is pretty much the same as it has been.

You've hit the nail on the head. I and many other irreligious people mentioned similar points in our posts on another thread earlier.

Of course, homosexuality bestiality etcetera have always existed, but I don't think there was ever a time, those that practiced it then, came out to announce to their neighbors and friends that they are Gays or lesbians, neither do i think there was a time when the priests of old, will join them in holy matrimony, while their friends and family cheered.

My point : things have been taken to a whole new level, just as man has advanced in science, he has also become more immoral.

The people of old times, must have had their ways of getting entertainment, without electronic media, but I'm not sure it included coming out to watch adults bang themselves in the name of entertainment.

I don't think There was ever a time humans were lawless, even in the absence of the kind of government will have now, they set up leaders among themselves, That's how the monarchical system of government started, they also had do's and donts, but no law is effective enough. Even in the presence of law there is still lawlessness, up till today, because, deviants will always exist in the land. that a man carried out a crime successfully doesn't mean there were no laws, he simply defied them.

Some people will even want to use disease and conflicts to support their argument that the world is getting worse. But truth is we are in one of the most peaceful times in history and one of the most healthy times too. All thanks to science.

As a matter of fact, there are no new diseases. What killed our ancestors in large numbers are these same diseases when they haven't been 'christened' diseases but 'demonic attacks'.

Thats practically more or less in Lagos, take a look at other rural communities and unsettled states like Benue. Likewise take a look at the world in general at a wider viewpoint "everything is in disarray". The simple truth to this thread is humanity is failing and the only way is to lean and submit totally to Jesus. May God bless you all as you do so.

Whether in Lagos or in rural communities around Nigeria, the world is either getting better or hasn't changed. We only think it is getting worse but the truth is that every generation thinks they are worse than the previous one. Look at today's Nigeria when people speak wistfully about times past when there was free education and life was easier and all, forgetting that those that lived in those times had either none of the comforts that are freely available now like mobile phones, computers, electricity etc or it was too expensive for them to afford. The fact on ground is that the world is improving and is getting better at managing disasters than before. Also, look at now, when disasters occur, the world bands together to help the affected community rebuild and get back on its feet. In times past, if you got struck by disaster, you were pretty much on your own.

You're looking at history through rose tinted glasses. For one, people DID watch naked people in times past as a form of entertainment. You seem to have forgotten about the Roman gladiators who had to battle each other and wild animals to the death for the amusement of a gawking public. Tell me, where that occurs now. Do we still hear of things like human sacrifices, killing of twins, banishment of people for the most pedestrian offences and such? How then can we say those tines aren't worse than today?

2000 years ago the average life expectancy was just 35 years in most parts of the world but today it's about 60.

The world is getting worse... The world of now ain't the same or what it used to be a thousand years ago. It has metamorphosed into something deadly---gradually turning into a beast. The scripture said, in latter days, perilous times shall come... Yeah, we have the tech and medicine, etc, but natures of people shall change, and men will wax worse in a two fold... Of course, evil has always been, but ours will project higher and reach the cap/peak of it.

Someone once said to me around 2011, that 10 years from now, men will begin to turn into another kind of human being. You too should be ready to turn into another kind of human being in God... Even the 10 years hasn't lapse, we are hearing all kinds things.

That they could reach 35years despite the order of evil religious leaders to kill people is even a miracle. Imagine 3000 years back when they'd be singing Saul has killed his thousands and David his ten thousands. Omo, if only two people killed so many, who will then remain? The world is getting better abeg.

My brother each age has it's own set of horrors each conditioned by the technology available at the time. You think if planes and bombs were available 1000 years ago, they would have just set them aside and not used them to blow themselves into oblivion because they were "better people"? Trust me, they would have used them in equally gruesome ways that would have shocked people of the time. Do you realize that there are fewer wars now than before, law enforcement is more efficient, diseases are better managed and life expectancy is generally longer? How do all these mean that the world is getting worse?

Nature knows why the human beings of 3000 to 2000 years ago didn't have enough wisdom so as to make missiles. I'm sure if they could, they would have ended human race on earth those days.

I don't dispute some of the things you said, but you need higher eyes to see that men has actually retrograde. For every invention you are glad about, it takes human lives in larger quantity. That's why it is the knowledge of the Tree of Good and Evil. Those who experienced world War 1 and 2, knew what's up... That's why they are trying all they can to keep the peace... But not for long... The number of lives those war took, with the epidemic that followed... Hmmmn... And men are still fighting wars with upgraded weapons...so, this century is no better. If you know the evils going on daily, you will weep... From trafficking, organ harvesting, etc. Some of these things has always been, but we have new trends in evil due to new inventions.

I don't think that the ratio of the life world war took compared to the earth's population as at then can be compared with the ratio of the life the Bible claimed that Yahweh took, compared to the population of the bible world. For example, it was recorded in the bible(assuming we take it as factual) that Yahweh destroyed the lives 99.999999999999999% of the human population in the time of Noah. Now let's compare the population of human lives destroyed by both world war 1 & 2 together then we can tell if things are getting better or not.
Note: I'm assuming that the bible is taken as an authentic record book.

Studies after studies have shown that the world is getting better because people are living longer lives, there are less wars and famines, people are having more disposable income, are more educated , have more rights, and are managing diseases better yet these ones don't want to agree because some book written by some ancient people that don't know anything about the nature of the stars said the things will get worse.
Things are actually getting better in reality.

Well you have a point but ill point to you that the world is only getting better technologically, the moral values have degraded drastically and thats my focal point of view. The social media which is supposed to be an effective tool majorly for positive networking and enhancing businesses are now being used the wrong way.

If you knew all the horrors that occurred in the past, you would also weep and thank God you were born in this era. That many of them went unrecorded or lost to history does not mean they don't happen. As I said, things are relative and you have to look at them with that in mind. Killing 200 people in a population of 1000 would seem less than killing 2000 people in a population of 10000 but the ratio is actually exactly the same.

Yes, we still hear of ritual killing, and human sacrifices and it's even rampant , I'm guessing you're Nigerian or African.

Agreed. Some things like Gladiator fights might have stopped. but we have terrorism which is not prearranged, like what we have
in the gladiator fights and the members of the public are the victims in this case. So it's matter of a greater evil replacing the lesser.

We might have become less barbaric and civilized in our conduct now compared to past times , I'm not disproving that , but still more immoral.

We've always had depraved people amongst us, my brother/sister. It's nothing new. The only reason it appears more now is because there are more people to engage in them and better ways to hear about people doing them. Here are just a few screenshots to tell you that some of these things we call immorality have always existed and weren't always even considered immoral.

In the case of Nigeria and indeed most African communities, we are yet to reach our age of enlightenment which is why we still believe in and engage in such things without reservations. Even at that, they are legally prohibited and not publicly accepted and participated in unlike in times past. I'm sure there are people in the Americas and Europe that still practice such but virtually no one accepts it publicly unlike before.
