I think its hard to pass a simple message to Nigerians. The main advantage people living in the U.S.A have over those is the exchange rate..... and the cost of living there is higher.....so unless u earn in dollars and spend in naira then u are balling.....thats why yahoo boys here are always smiling to the bank cuz their money comes in dollars....so unless u save a lot in the U.S which is quite uncomfortable that is when you will have a lot to spend back in Nigeria. 1 Like |

timesup234: You may be right if you are talking about Americans. Immigrants do not have same lifestyle as natives and they do not make similar costly choices. You need to know there are different classes of Nigerians in the USA. There are those who belong to the top 25% earning bracket that do better than most Americans. In fact there are sizable number of them. Of course there are those who belong to the lower bracket. But even this class of Nigerians have better quality of life than your Nigerian bank manager. Access to power (no polluting generator), good road (less trip to fraudulent mechanics), free and high quality public schools to high school level (millions saved unlike in Nigeria), even a cleaner here can afford to own a car and house rent or mortgage (if married with two income sources), you sleep with your eyes closed (no fear of Evans or robbers), access to good health care, access to capital from banks at low interest rate (compare 26% upward in Nigerian banks, if you can get one). I used to work with one of the top four energy companies and I met so many Nigerians in same company. For example, in a group of 40 mostly PhD level team, only two blacks are Nigerians. At lunch time, we played soccer almost every day and there I met so many other Nigerians. At lunch you play basketball, use the gym, play ping pong, swim...and so many others. And these are open to all level of staff. And there are so many other Nigerians in other professions. I have a friend who is a manager in a company and his wife hold good position in a major bank. They have a house here and a multi-million naira house completed in Lekki. I mean, these are Nigerians earning a honest living. The Nigerian medical doctors and nurses here are too numerous. Open a phone book and you see there names. So, do not generalize. Accepted that all do not belong to the same class, it depend on how you come to this country and what you make of it. It's not all rosy though. I was told that I needed to speak like an American because they wanted to play politics knowing I am about leading a major project. They brought in an American like them. One of the reasons I left the job in matter of months. Most Nigerians won't though because of the money. Ironically, while there I wish I was doing a similar job in Nigeria because I would have had a lot of extra cash to run profitable side projects. 4 Likes |

MISTAICEY02288:Don't mind the ignorant OP, I was with an old university school mate recently in Benin, the guy works in a bank and has a wife and three kids already. He told me he is planning to move to Yankee, that almost all his colleagues have the same plan too. This is a guy that is doing well by Nigerian standard. To think that the OP of this thread says he stays in Lagos, Ajah for that matter, says so much about his level of exposure. A typical Lagos guy with street orientation know that hustling in Yankee is better than doing a white collar job in naija. 5 Likes |

They don't ha e savings because the system does not want them to have it. You don't buy with cash in those climes, you pay via credit cards and believe me, it's almost compulsory that you must be credit worthy. Having all these opportunities made them not to care about savings or even owning an account. It's only the millionaires that have these things and still they rely on their credit cards. timesup234: 2 Likes |

timesup234: you are not comparing equal standards of living. two bedroom where I stay in Lekki is about 1 million naira. The guy in america does not have have saving because there are bills and taxes which translate to a better quality life. however i agree with you that there are exaggerations about how guys doing menial jobs in the US are better than Bank Managers here. I am usually like nor be the US wey I dey visit and the naija boiz wey I dey meet for there? Also, I agree that doing a currency conversion does not explain taxes and other expenses. 1 Like |

IamaNigerianGuy: I was only speaking of the kingdoms of Nigeria not every race of blackman. Before the invention of the concept of race about 500 years ago, most Africans saw themselves as members of their own racial group within their own ethnicity. You see the various traditions some so bizarre and inhumane that it can be easily reasoned that some ethnic groups of Africans are backwards. Yorubas are a highly advanced race of Africans because of the Yoruba woman. Other races of Africans suppress their women and girls go undeveloped. Bugandans respect their women and are a highly advanced East African race. So is Bunyoro Kitara and Tooro kingdoms are highly advanced. Any ethnic group that kills the mother because she birthed twins is a backward race. Any group that uses an entire village of people as doomed sacrifices is a backward group. Hausas groups refusing to educate women and girls are ignoring the gifts of intelligent contribution put in a woman of their group, that woman could invent the cure to drought or educate your son so well he would stand out among men. Look at the West, they secretly embrace pederasty culture so they molest children and now homosexuality is an issue for them. Sir, bloodline matters more than race and its enlightenment in understanding this law of reincarnation. Who wants to be reborn amongst a backwards people despite the race? I even stumbled on a thread here on Nairaland some weeks ago about a man who is relocating to the UK despite having good paying job here in Naija. In fact, he was already planning on giving out some of his properties here in Naija before relocating. |

wonlasewonimi:exactly cost of living in naija is cheap because quality of life is poor. once you want to live a life as good as the average american, you would pay through your nose. Imagine living in a 2 bedroom in lekki with 24 hrs power and kids in meadow hall. Thats a rent of 1.5 million, service charge + power of 1.5 million and school fees per child of 3 million. Thats 6 million naira for only rent and school fees so you need to earn like 10 million at least - which is bank manager salary. Now similar quality of life in the US would only require a USD 40k salary which is above menial jobs but what the average engineer will earn. 4 Likes |

timesup234: 75,000 dollars? It's higher, it depends on the state. California will pay you higher but with taxes and housing, you won't find anything to do with the money. Republican States tend to pay lower, but you would enjoy it with low tax and standard of living. I haven't seen a Nigerian RN with one job. After RN go and do CPR, increase your cash flow. Then at weekends you work at bars. My cousin does all these. Lol, America gives and America takes. It's all about your planning. 1 Like |
