Very true but that is because the Nigerian system is dysfunctional. In civilized climes, you pay your bills else you cannot survive. In Nigeria, people find a way to avoid paying bills and that is why we are where we are today.

Abroad, you can't just bump into someone's house and join them in their meal, unlike in Nigeria where you can go to your friend's home and start cooking your own meal. There you work to feed and live.

Only sensible Nigerians survive abroad and that is because they always remember where they came from and what their end-game is all about. Some go there and loathe doing jobs that pay. They keep looking for jobs that they believe they're worth not knowing that such jobs are mostly the preserve of the locals.

Then you have those who in their first year, want to start living like Jay Z, Beyonce or the Kardashians grin those are the ones that end up begging for food stamps undecided

well let me put some marker on waht U just said.
How do Nigerians live and dont pay bills? ie Electricity.
i dont think u can just go to your friend's house and start cooking in Nigeria 2017, life had moved on

it is true that the system is dyfuctional but it is up to us to change that and not be docile like our fathers and mothers
i will disagree with you on people coming uninvited,if you live in urban centers in nigeria people rearly bump into you house uninvited except you are single and you have the right to not allow them.

[quote author=timesup234 post=61858382]The funniest and most expensive joke I have heard from Nigerians doing menial jobs in the US. and earning between $1,500- $2,000, is claiming that they are richer than bank managers in Nigeria. I guess they make their money in America while spending it in Nigeria. This stupid joke need to stop. A Nigerian doing menial job in the US. at best can be compare to someone receiving 80,000 Monthly in Nigeria in purchasing power. A Nigerian doing odd jobs for 10 yrs will still be paying rent while a 10 yrs bank manager would have long built two to three houses with a lucrative investment. Nigerians in America need to stop converting currencies because it is clearly stated that if you earn $12,000 annually in America you are living in poverty[ @OP you are totally ignorant of your argument, What about the security of your life and property, what about the good roads and constant electric supply, what of the guaranteed health facilities? I understand your point that purchasing power in USA might be expensive but as a wise man you save 50% of your income at home and live a low key life in the USA cos there is no one you want to oppress with money or material things.

It's obvious the person who posted this tthread has never traveled. When I finished university, I search for job for 7 good years and nothing came up. I traveled to UK with the help of a friend who did visa for me whom I promised to pay once I find something doing. I arrived UK and after two months I got a menial job that pays me 1600$ a month. Now these are my expenses:
House rent per month 350$
Phone subscription for data 21$ unlimited
Food and beverage 150$
Bus ticket for one month to work 100$
After all other expenses I do save up to 800$ every month. Some months I do save 1000$
So please let be realistic about our analysis.

I know you are trying to make some good points about living in America which I agree but calm down with the exaggeration. It is rare to find an 80k salary earner in Nigeria afford to rent a comfortable two bedroom flat. I am talking of the Nigeria where real major business and social activities take place (in the context you are giving) like Abuja, Lagos, Port-harcourt e.t.c not Osun, Yola, Maiduguri e.t.c
So those places are not in Nigeria abi?

The way I see it. Nigerians living abroad are trying too hard to protect their ego. They know Nigerians have too much respect for those living abroad and are afraid to lose some should Nigerians find out their lives are not all bliss.

Wetin consign me sha, for a long time the power supply in Nigeria has improved immensely. I'm grateful for this and doing the best I can in my capacity. If everyone stayed in Nigeria, put our brains in good use, things will get better than they are.

America is portrayed as good in the media while Nigeria and other supposed third world countries shitholes. So the person bringing up the argument of people migrating to America should not forget media conditioning.

I hope for the day Nigerians will start thinking positively about Nigeria in spite of our present condition. When we tell ourselves we can do it, we put our brains in a healthy state for creativity.

It is the plain truth. It is impossible to save 10kusd annually in the united states, even those with a paying job of $75,000 cant save that much. Do you know what it means to have $100,0000 in cash in america? 85% of americans dont have it and i am even talking about first class citizens

You be mumu. I saved more than your 10K while paying 6 of you salaries in Nigeria.

people doing menial jobs in America are mostly undocumented immigrant or new immigrant and they get below minimum wage and dont have access to basic facilities.$75,000 in some areas in the us is just nonsense while in some small county, you are the king but it is hard to find that in small county that is why most travel to big cities

life in Nigeria is better if you know your way.few Nigerians are successful in america that is why they run back home after seeing they have no opportunities there, funny enough Nigerians at home do support some family members financially in that same america.

No I see desperate people trying to protect an illusion they have created for others that is far from reality. I don't see any balanced view here, all I hear from Nigerians over there is that Nigeria is bad and America is good because they have stable power and water supply and good roads. This argument is no longer holding water anymore since Nigeria is catching up already.

I know for sure that Jonathan is far far richer than Obama but does that makes Jonathans life better than his...Obama a former President of a good political system while Jonathan a former President of a bad and corrupt system.. How many Nigerians r bank managers? How many Nigerians earns above 500k monthly maybe 2 out of 100..this is a country whr over 60% youths r jobless, if u hv a good job or business u can never know what ordinary people on the street are going through. Same govt that's is paying graduates 23k per month through N power program Abeg what n what can u do with 23k in a month?

I think you understand better what he is trying to say and the truth of the matter is this, the lot of those commenting here about how this went, that went, most of them including the ones that are clamouring to go now will end up as undocumented immigrants with only menial jobs to fall back to.

America is not the nirvana as painted by many is what he is trying to say. The Nigerian doctors, nurses and bankers over there went through a whole lot to pay through for the education that gave them the life they are living there now and even at that, some of them including the bona-fide Americans are yet to finish paying off their school loans, some may never finish paying it off till they die.

As much as Nigeria can be hard, truly getting the good life in the USA is not easy, you will sweat your brows out in the heat and cold even as a legal immigrant talk more of an undocumented.

Modified

For those that will come and say they will save and get the education too, try saving $40k from your meagre and irregular $800 a week pay and let's see how long it will take you.

God bless people like u, we know dem, we understand dem. Yankee nor be yankee of b4

Mr. man which UK? Is it not the same one that I'am staying?

Rent-£ 850 pcm
Internet (BT)-£30
Phone (EE) -£15
Tube (Oyster)-£161.84 monthly.
Renting fridge, microwave, washing machine & drier-£40
Utilities (SSE)-£150
Shopping-£400
Drycleaning-£30

That's a total of £1700 (almost 800,000 Naira!) And that's a very modest student lifestyle ooo, assuming you stay locked up in your crib with no enjoyment whatsoever.

To be honest, people are just managing in this fcukd up place.

actually it's true
A labourer on a construction site is paid 50 cedis per day
A carpenter earns 70 cedis per day and in a day he can do two to three jobs and make it big by 6pm.
A taxi driver daily sales can be more than 150 cedis on any good day.
An entery level worker in the private sector earn between a 1000 cedis and 2000 cedis a month.

Bricklayer carpenter don't let dem deceive u in nigeria those guys earn a lot of money, but drink, woman nor dey let dem see road so u think dey are poor

If u get bricklayer as friend tell him to honestly tell u how much he makes per month u will be shocked.
