The Edo State Government has assured the people of the state that work on the Gelegele Seaport is in progress as there is sufficient economic justification for its development.

Speaking to journalists on the socio-economic gains of the planned seaport, Governor Godwin Obaseki explained that it would serve as an agro-processing zone and will be driven by the state government and the private sector.

Reacting to the rejection of a motion on the establishment of the seaport, sponsored by Honourable Ehiozuwa Johnson Agbonayinma in the House of Representatives, Obaseki said Gelegele seaport will serve as an export processing zone, and added that the appropriate agencies are already being consulted.

“For me, I don’t understand what was being attempted or what the issues are at the House of Representatives. We never designed a Port that requires such a motion to be moved on the floor of the National Assembly. I must add that we are ready to work with all organs of government to realise this project as it will impact greatly on the economy of the state and region,” the governor said.

He explained that the seaport will be located where there is enough gas that can be used to generate electricity and power industries.

“There is sufficient economic justification for the Gelegele port and we will raise funds from the private sector to develop the facility. We do not believe that the federal government will stop or discourage Edo State from building a Port that is economically viable,” he added.

Obaseki said the seaport is on course as his administration is talking to consultants who are currently working on the designs and conducting studies on water depth, the width of the river and the amount of dredging needed.

He assured Edo people that a lot is being done to make the project a reality within the shortest and realistic time possible.

How many importers are in Edo? What economic value will that be to Edo right now?

Another white Elephant project. I'd rather he makes it a tourist site with a Yacht and other boat regatta for viewing pleasure

If used for importing it will go moribund faster than it was built. However,he did state it's supposed to be primarily an "Agro-Processing" facility.

Bro you know Edo state government is currently investing more on agriculture. This project alone can boost our earnings because it will make the transportation of those produce way easier and faster hence investors will pick the state when considering an investment on Agriculture sector

the reason why Yoruba are slaves to Hausa is because there is an agreement to monopolies seaport/airport in western region so the Hausa will control the power up there, so it is an agreement that must be kept that is why is difficult for other region to have this facilities even they have the money

let the OBA of Edo stand where any traditional ruler from Yoruba land stand you will inferiority complex. you can't compare a man that was born as a king, brought up as king, with one ex_NYSC member who don't know what is royalty, he became king by accident

From the 60's right up to the 80's there used to be fully functioning ports in Warri, Sapple, Koko, and Calabar. it's a national shame that they were all allowed to die, just so Lagos would have the monopoly.

The Gelegele project is a worthwhile one, but I fear political interests will kill it, just like they prevented Tinapar from really taking off. There is a vested interests in keeping the port monopoly in Lagos.

common sense is indeed not common.
How will a sane man imagine that Oduduwa whose descendants, Yoruba's (both in and outside Nigeria) are over 50M came out from Ogiso of Benin with population less than 3M.

How on earth will Benin with landmass less than that of Ilesa kingdom alone be the progenitor of Oduduwa whose people occupy a landmass 30x that of Benin.

I'm not surprise though, ipob also believes that over 40M Igbo's are Jewish when the world Jewish population is less than 20M.

Even if you don't know basic SET theory that a SUBSET cannot be bigger than the Universal SET, you should ask yourself...

i will ask u a qurstion-which culture out of the two influences the other? in edo state today, ppl bear yoruba names, your royal ruler is referred to as OBA and there are lot of yoruba cultures hidden in your ways of life(culturally). but thr yorubas are very distinct. no influnce of other culture except that of the Europeans which was general to all west african cultures.

for ur information the benin ppl have their own history abt oduduwa likewise the yorubas to. i am not present to witness d oduduwa regime so i dont know which is true. but if u read ur wiki very well, d so called oduduwa who came frm benin met a group of ppl in ile-ife already-the yorubas. that means the yorubas have been in existence before the arival of "benin oduduwa". and i can categorically tell u dat the word OBA is a yoruba word and does noy belong to the benin ppl.

Must you mention the great igbo nation in order to make a point. Why not restrict your answers to whether or not Oduduwa is a descendant of Ogiso of Benin.
