Why dont you go and read the history of Nigeria so you can know how the war started?

Ojukwu had no choice but to fight, Nigeria brought war to his area.

Bro, that was only because he had chosen to break out and carve out a seperate republic where he could lord. All I am saying is the motive for the disintegration was for personal gratification at the expense of his people. He couldn't see himself being ruled by his mate in the army; a fellow lt. colonel like himself (Yakubu Gowon) .

And trust me, this was not a period the east were marginalized, infact they had full autonomy of power having just produced the first head of state ... Zik and then Maj General Aguiyi Ironsi as first military head of state.

See, nobody is calling ojukwu a coward, all we are saying is who asked him to fight? and who says the easterners were under bondage then? Trust me his fight was more personally instigated.

Please stop arguing with these lots. When someone's eyes are covered with hatred, they'll never see good in you... And anything you do will be judged against you. I stopped arguing with them once they told me that Igbos should not have left the north even in the face of the pogrom. Their opinion was that Igbo leaders in the north should have had a table discussion with their killers. Can you imagine that?

No you got it wrong. Google the Aburi agreement. Even though Ojukwu was technically senior to Gowon, Ojukwu agreed to recognise Gowon as head of state in return for one thing, that Gowon honor the Aburi agreement signed in Ghana.

When both men returned to Nigeria, Gowon broke the agreement by creating 12 states and this forced Ojukwu to declare Biafra. Gowon caused the war

They dont realise that the pogrom was enough reason for Ojukwu to have declared Biafra.

Which tyranny? Which violence?

The eastern region of the first republic was the envy of all and the pride of Nigeria because they had the highest number of graduates. .

Needless to say that was why they were able to produce the first head of state - Zik and first military head of state - Ironsi.

Violence was only brought to the republic of biafra after their 1st eastern military governor - Ojukwu chose to disintegrate and breakout forming a biafran republic where he would lord because he couldn't submit to Gowon who was his mate in the army.

Mind you, I am igbo, and my late dad fought in the biafran war as part of the biafran army.

I know your eyes are clouded with hatred, but I'll still waste this little time once to say this, not for you to know, cos you already know, but for you not to misinform those that do not know.

You claim that it was a personal war.... But the eastern region that seceded did so unanimously with a vote passed in their parliament.

At least you don't deny that the east is marginalized now as you implied in your second paragraph.

You claim that Ojukwu didn't want his mate Gowon to rule over him..... But you stylishly forgot that Ojukwu was fighting for a Yoruba man who was supposed to be the head of state after the assassination of Ironsi. This man was the most senior in rank and he was skippped just to make Gowon the head of state. Like someone advised you earlier read history.

If all these you said we're so true, let nigeria reintroduce it's own history in educational curriculum or is it afraid of its own history?

You are a sorry excuse for a human being. It is a grave injustice to ndigbo to live in the same country with dimwits like you who do not understand how the massacre of over 45000 civilians, the execution of over 400 igbo army officers under the supervision of murtala mohammed and Gowon, can provoke a people and their 33 year old leader into a fight back. Do not blame the irresponsible Gowon whose house was on fire but stupidly came to Aburi with no government position to appease the already boiling east with enormous refugee problem. Yet had the effrontery to back down on the one presented by the east through it's intelligent leader after an agreement has been reached. Instead blame Ojukwu for beign a leader for his people in the face of obvious tyranny. Nonsense.

Your progenitor did a bad job at lecturing you about the history of your people(if indeed you are Igbo as you claim)...ojukwu ONLY declared biafra when it became apparent that the gowon led administration couldn’t (or maliciously decided not to) stop the wave of massacre of easterners up north..even those who managed to flee the suburbs were still waylaid on the road and slaughtered..what was ojukwu( the then military governor of the east to do?) fold his arms and watch his people massacred in thousands? Even after the aburi accord, ojukwu urged the igbos to go back to their businesses in the north that all was calm...those who were unfortunate to believe ojukwu went back and what did they get? Brutal death..Ojukwu didn’t declare Biafra, the declaration was a collective will of the people..if it wasn’t so, they wouldn’t have had the will to fight for 3 solid years..No one will fight and die for a cause he doesn’t believe in...

Thank you very much for your 3rd paragraph...

Pls read my very first post on this thread. I never labelled Ojukwu a tyrant. Infact my term was that he was a resolute man who wanted the heirachy of the military preserved.

After the assassination of Ironsi by a coup led by then major muritala Mohammad, Ojukwu's prerogative was that the next in line; Brigadier gen. Babafemi Ogundipe took over.

Ogundipe wasn't so keen as he realised that the allegiance of the army were with the north who happened to be his junior. He knew he would be slaughtered like his predecessor if he ventured in.

All fine and good, this however didn't go down well with Ojukwu, which was the beginning of the beef as he couldn't fathom how his mate would suddenly become his boss overnight.

You people should stop arguing with hate filled Nigerians whose rallying point is their hate for Igbos. They spread hate and accuse igbos of spreading hate. They launch a campaign of hate and bitterness and accuse others of it. In their campaign, their leader threatens a tribe with genocide but they come online claiming that Igbos did a campaign of hatred whereas there was no record of Igbo leaders threatening anyone with violence.

They are filled with hate for you and you can never make anyone to love you. There is nothing you can do to make them not see you as the enemy.

And to you hate filled anti igbos..... We love Ojukwu, let that sink into your dense skulls and also know that there's nothing you can do about it. Just as there's nothing we can do about your hate for us.

At least you didn't try to deny the truth. Now let me give you another truth which you can't deny, to prove to you that it was not any nonsense stupid fathom that you try to spread ....

Ojukwu later agreed to recognize Gowons government which among other things led to the agreement at Aburi. Did Gowon later renege on the agreement or not? An agreement which he signed.

Has this debunked that useless insinuations that you have in your brain that Ojukwu didn't want his mate above him? I guess not... Cos your sense of judgement is apparently clouded with hate

A great man. The first Igbo man to lead the entire Igbo nation. Like any man he had his faults but his courage and leadership overshadow them greatly. He was there for us and showed strength when it seemed our enemies were about to annihilate us. If there had been more like him in the south and middle belt we would not be where are today.

Rest on Ikemba
