2017 World English-Language Scrabble Championship Holding In Nairobi, Kenya by adeadeyera(op): 10:23am On Nov 10, 2017
The 2017 World English-Language Scrabble Players Association (WESPA) Championship is currently on-going in Nairobi Kenya but only a few Nigerians outside the game seem to be aware.

The last edition two years ago in Perth Australia, where Nigeria's Jighere Wellington emerged world champion almost suffered similar fate as #TeamNigeria went unheralded, until a Nigerian won [for the first time ever] and the country became the number one Scrabble playing nation in the world, owing to #TeamNigeria's superlative showing.

It would be recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari placed a congratulatory call through to the team whilst they were still in Australia.

In defence of that title two years down the line, when there isn't an outcry of visa denials and other logistical troubles that seem to characterize every international outing in the sport because it's being held in Africa, Nigerians are not even aware of any World Championship.

The saddest part is the fact that #TeamNigeria travelled as both Defending Champions and as the Number One Scrabble Playing nation. A feat which, until 2015, was the exclusive preserve of Scrabble world powers like Britain, USA, Canada, Australia, Thailand etc.

Let's cheer our own please, even if we're cursed with ignoramuses at the helm of our country's sporting affair.

All the best #TeamNigeria.

Defending Champion, Nigeria's Wellington Jighere led on the first two days.
Today being the 3rd day, two other Nigerians are contending for top position, along with the greatest Scrabble player of all time, Nigel Richard.

So, in the mix are 3 Nigerians in top 5.

Isn't this country blessed?

No one is talking about it because

its played with cloths on

Its played by intelligent people

It doesn't require you to dance half naked

It doesnt follow that principle of belonging to one nonsense or the other ..

Nigeria is home to 20% of the top 50 best Scrabble players in the world. No other country comes close.

Not even England!

A Nigerian is also the all time best player of the International Scrabble Club (online).

Because Nigerians don't like to use their heads. They love celebrity gossip, testimonies of un-merited favor, tribalism and who wore what and why.
