A Non-disclosure agreement is just to protect the intellectual property of the company you want to work for. It is not the same as a bond or a non-compete agreement. If you think you like the job take it and you can leave at any time. however, you can not tell anybody the things you see or hear while at work. You should also get a learned colleage(lawyer) to go through the agreement and make sure your obligations and expectations are in line with the new employers.

I passed an interview for a web development job I applied for and I was asked to sign a letter of non disclosure agreement before
1. I am told what the company is doing
2. They will show me their office
My question is
1. is this normal?
2. If I want to leave after some years is it possible?
They said they want to be sure am in. The salary is 70k in lagos. I don't want a situation after sometime I will start regretting taking up the job.

He doesn't even know the company yet, that is the only problem.

No go sign yourself into eternal consensual slavery. For 70k, I'd say its not worth it. Esply if you don't have know in details what the company is up to.

NDA is different from bond. 2 different things entirely

I know. But the op made mention of something like not being able to leave after number of years. That was why I said he should study it well. If it was just NDA without any bond-like wordings, then he can sign.

This is probably via an agent who has pegged your salary at N70,000.

This is normal because when you finally get to where you will work, the salary being paid for your services to the agent migght be from N140k and 200K.

I would not sign and accept the offer unless you desperately need the Job. As a web developer, you can provide services on Upwork, Fiverr and Freelancer and make more than 70K monthly.

It is normal.Every company has secrets in their system of operation which if another company of the same product knows can be used to destroy them.
U can leave any time u like.

For 70k salary,na dem dey do this nonsense,as in showing you their office after you don sign non-disclosure agreement.
Every disciplined staff ought to know that he should protect his company interest and secrets.
You have a well-sought after skills.I know the economy weather is so cloudy and not friendly, but why not hold on.
You can start as a freelancer, after all we are now in a global village.
Bro,let me be sincere with you,to make it in this life, you have to think as an entrepreneur who is providing solutions to human race needs. And good enough, you have that skill.
How I wish,I was more dogged and have this entrepreneurship mindset when I just passed out of my NYSC Scheme.

Bros, take that letter to a lawyer, just to make sure every single word and it's legal implications are understood.

NDA before knowing the office address is a bit strange

#gbam u just said my mind Bro

Don't just sign a letter out of desperation. Believe me, 70k is too small for one to sign a contract that will tie one down for a certain number of years. I will advise you take your time and study the contract very well before signing.

Even access bank that pays well and give their staff cars after signing their employment bond, people still struggle to leave there before the 2 years lapses, not to talk of a job that pays you less than one third of access bank entry level salary.

Like people said, take the agreement to a legal practitioner if you can't figure it out yourself.
From my understanding of the word non-disclosure, I believe it means you can't talk about some things agreed on, and not that one can't leave. This means that even if you leave you can't talk about what they do in the company.

If there's another meaning please let me know

I don't really understand this whole thing...

When the OP was applying for the job, was the location of the office not disclosed

Was the name of the employer not there?...
When u were been interviewed, Didn't the panel explain alittle about what they do? What do u exactly mean by u don't know what they do?

I don't know about Nigeria employer but there's something called confidentiality agreement between an employer and employee....Maybe he was scared about the English usage...

Even when you were looking for a job in a multinational company, there are certain terms and conditions you have to agree upon. Before clicking or register on the career website..
Though People just click accept without really reading those long English sentences.

I bet the OP has signed it before even coming here to do an after thoughts... just relax man.. it means u can't go about running your mouth.. or licking information to rival companies...

You are entitled to know the terms of an agreement before you sign.
Please get clarifications before proceeding. Doesn't sound good to me sha

Walk away. The pay is not worth the stress. However, if you decide to go ahead, you would sure need the counsel of a lawyer to know what you are about committing to.

A 70k job required to sign a non disclosure agreement is not worth it, not in any way.

If you are a young graduate who has no years of experience , the 70k is ok for you as long as you will also learn while on the job. Signing a bond before been told things about the work is non professional. You may not be given the employment letter first, but you are suppose to be given the bond to study and see if the conditions of service is ok and then given the employment letter.
So, request to be given the bond and study first before you can sign it. Besides, Non- disclosure agreement is signed along side with your witness. Will your witness come to their office to sign without seeing the contents of the bond?

Nigerian graduates sef. Anyway, it is to protect the company and you from leaking their secrets. If you do you'll not only be fired but jailed

A nondisclosure agreement is not needed in an employer-employee relationship.

NDA is meant for B2B relationships (business to business)

There is no way you won't disclose your job descriptions to a third party (future employer). The only thing you need to sign after a proper and in depth examination is the terms of employment.

I'm guessing you don't understand the nature of your new "work". I think you were employed on a freelance basis, in that case, an NDA is proper and appropriate. Read through it and be sure you understand every bit.

Non-disclosure agreement is necessary so dat loudmouths from nairaland do not enter a bar one day and start exposing their company's (trade secrets)
It would also ensure (criminal) and civil liability in d event that d above is done

Ensure a lawyer checks that NDA before you append your signature. Wanting you to sign before the office address is revealed to you sounds very clandestine in my honest opinion. You need to be really careful please.
