There has been alot of conjecture surrounding the origin of the name Biafra. Some claiming the name is Portuguese, some saying it was derived from the name of a Senegambian ethnic group, some mischievously claiming it is of Biblical origin, the list goes on. But today, thanks to the Information Age, we are able to know the true origin of the name Biafra, a name given to the shoreline of eastern Nigeria, Cameroon, and Guinea Bissau, and a name of a breakaway republic that lasted from 1967 to 1970. Before the information on the true origin of the name Biafra is presented, I will expose the different claims, or conjectures, surrounding the name.
