Ade Hassan

Owner/CEO

A nude bra and skin tone hosiery are the basics of every woman’s wardrobe, at least in theory. For many women of colour, finding suitable skin-tone hosiery and lingerie has not been an option. Frustrated by the lack of skin-tone choices to go with her ever-expanding wardrobe, Nubian Skin founder, Ade Hassan, decided it was time for ‘a different kind of nude’.

Inspired by trail blazing women, Eunice W. Johnson and super model Iman, who created Fashion Fair and Iman cosmetics, Ade took the leap and created Nubian Skin. It’s been an uphill battle, but every revolution starts somewhere.

Nubian Skin launched with a carefully edited collection of lingerie and hosiery to provide the essential underwear needs of women of colour. Headquartered in London, Nubian Skin delivers worldwide and looks forward to growing the company’s offering and expanding its reach.

So for all you beautiful women, next time you need a nude pair of hold-ups or maybe a nude strapless bra to go under that stunning white halter dress, Nubian Skin is only a few clicks away.

Empowering Women. Embracing our Colour.

Nigerian-Yoruba Developers Launch Bitcoin Exchange for Africa Called Bitkoin.Africa

www.cryptovest.com/news/nigerian-developers-launch-bitcoin-exchange-for-africa-called-bitkoinafrica/

A team of developers in Nigeria, led by Timi Ajiboye, has managed to launch a Bitcoin exchange for Africa – Bitkoin.Africa.

The exchange comes with a secure platform and an automated escrow service along with Bitcoin buying and selling via debit cards (Visa and Mastercard) and sale proceeds can go directly to your Nigerian bank account.

While Nigeria gets full functionality, other countries in the region can only buy Bitcoin for now.

Many believe Africa is a region ripe for cryptocurrency adoption. E.A Afolabi, an IT company CEO in Nigeria, believes people want cryptocurrencies for online shopping and are also drawn to them given the economic instability in the region.

Meet the Man Running the Only Bitcoin Node In West Africa [Yoruba]

https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/article/xy5evk/meet-the-man-running-the-only-bitcoin-node-in-west-africa

Stashed away somewhere in Lagos is a lonely piece of bitcoin software. Running on a server in a data center in the Nigerian capital, it's the only reachable bitcoin node of its type not just in the country, but in almost all of West and Central Africa, without a companion for thousands of miles in every direction.

The node in Lagos is owned and run by 35 year old software developer Tim Akinbo, who said that his interest in bitcoin stems from gaps in the African financial ecosystem.

"Moving money from one country to another in Africa can be very tough," Akinbo says in a Skype call. "Right now it's easier for you to send money to the US than it is to send it to another African country. I saw bitcoin as a technology that could really change that."

Bitcoin nodes are fundamental to keeping the bitcoin network functioning: each of them is a physical or virtual machine (a self-contained computer operating system deployed alongside other programmes on a more powerful piece of hardware) running the bitcoin software in conjunction with a stored copy of the blockchain, constantly synced between them in order to maintain a decentralized database of transactions. But though the network may not have a center, certain areas still have a far greater node density: as the below chart from bitcoin mapping site bitnodes.21.co shows, North America and Western Europe have a high concentration, whereas most of Asia, Africa and South America have only a small scattering.

Akinbo chose to run his own node to learn about the workings of the cryptocurrency in depth and contribute to the strength of the network as a whole. For reasons of price and practicality most Nigerians are unlikely to choose this option – Akinbo's server costs are 10,000 Naira per month ($32) in a country where GDP per capita is only around $3000 – but nonetheless, it's part of a growing interest in bitcoin in the country overall.

"Last year we had an explosion in the use of bitcoin in Nigeria," Akinbo says. "At the end of the year I got a call from my dad asking where he could buy bitcoin from! That's when I knew it was reaching the mainstream."

A number of factors combined in 2016 to spark this uptake: a devaluation of the Naira against the dollar, rampant inflation, and a proliferation of investment schemes that encouraged people to buy cryptocurrency (to the point the Nigerian Securities and Exchange Commission is now actively warning against them.)

Meanwhile, African banks have also been looking to fintech startups to help them harness the power of bitcoin, hoping to regain some of the market share that has been lost to telecoms providers in the money transmission sector.

Whatever the reasons, many Nigerians decided to start learning more about the cryptocurrency, and listings on the localbitcoins site now show a healthy number of buy and sell offers in Nigeria.

The best street food in New York is from this Nigerian-Yoruba vendor

It’s all you ever hear about from mates who’ve visited the big apple – how INCREDIBLE the pizza slices are. But next time you know of someone about to head across the pond, you might want to tell them to forget the ersatz Italian in favour of something far more flavoursome. Because the best street food in New York is Nigerian.

According to The Vendy Awards – the annual street food competition which determines who is crowned best street food vendor in NYC, DF Nigerian is the greatest food truck operating in the Big Apple. Founded by Nigerian couple Godshelter and Bisola Oluwalogbon, the truck’s been going for two years. It all started with Godshelter selling meals out of the back of his car outside the Nigerian embassy in the middle of Manhattan.

In New York – a city with so many different ethnicities – it’s fantastic to see a proper home-grown West African business winning the hearts of diners. After all, those of us who are from Ghanian and Nigerian backgrounds know how good the food is, but it’s not a particularly mainstream cuisine. At least, not yet.

Why Muyiwa Ogungboye sold everything he had to seed-fund eStream Networks

As the CEO of one of Nigeria’s largest enterprise internet service providers, Muyiwa Ogungboye prides himself in his capacity to endure hardship. But things were so difficult in the earlier days of building his company — eStream Networks — that he almost threw in the towel twice.

On one occasion, crucial equipment got fried up, causing the company network to shut down and they didn’t have the resources to import a replacement.

“We lost all our business in one day,” Muyiwa told me during a recent interview at the eStream Networks office in Victoria Island, Lagos.

Needless to say, Muyiwa was all but ready to pack up the business. But as fate would have it, one of his staff members convinced him to reach out to a company director who linked him up with a friend in the US. This friend agreed to ship down a replacement, on credit, with a 6-month repayment plan.

Muyiwa hasn’t looked back since then. eStream Networks has grown from a strictly satellite communications company to expand into radio, fibre and direct-to-consumer 4G/LTE retail (in the works).

Cartehub is a multi-merchant online marketplace for the best varieties of food, farmers market, organic products, handmade items, crafts, arts plus the best and most convenient laundry and dry cleaning services in the African market. Their journey started a little over ten years ago when they saw needs, challenges and possibilities all around. Cartehub's platform has a unique "Merchant-Near-You" shopping system. Merchants are listed in a hierarchy which emphasises their nearness to the shopper, which in turn leads to lower delivery costs. On Olafusi's team, are Tobi Ogunwande who takes care of social media marketing, while Ifeoluwa Enitan and Tosin Ayeni handle business development.

Caretehub's mission is to showcase and promote locally made products, offer shoppers intuitive and efficient online shopping platforms, while offering them quality, locally made products and services from multiple merchants with regular freebies and added value. They also aim to bring more visibility and sales to local merchants, and help them contribute to the growth of the domestic economy by “Growing and Buying Local”.

Oluwatomi Solanke, Ayomide Fagbohungbe and Opeyemi Olanipekun decided to put heads together, to solve logistics and delivery problems for SME companies and small merchants, within some of the busiest metropolitan cities within Nigeria. Their start-up company called DropBuddies, connects people who need their packages delivered to a specific destination, with those who are headed towards such destination points.

Their whole delivery process uses a combination of technology and logistics, to execute its' "peer-to-peer package delivery service", which relies on GPS to alert couriers closest to indicated pickup points, via push notification on their mobile device. For now, they offer services within Lagos, but have plans to move into Abuja, Port-Harcourt etc.

Oluwatomi Solanke , Co Founder of DropBuddies, has a bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Lagos, from where he graduated in 2013.

Their courier system include private drivers, commercial drivers, bike users and pedestrians. Such couriers must understand the routes within the city, and be able to navigate inner city roads, with ease. Business owners needing logistics services can also use their channels to send deliveries, to their customers. Packages could be anything from flowers, keys, invitation cards to bulky items such as furniture.

DropBuddies services are said to be reliable, convenient and time-saving, as it allows users to track items’ delivery status, and set future dates for item pickup, all from their mobile phones. Since inception, DropBuddies on-demand delivery platform has recorded several milestones, including its selection for SpeedUp Africa’s Bootcamp in Ghana.

According to Oluwatomi Solanke , Co Founder of DropBuddies, “African cities are hard to navigate, paved roads are few and addresses are difficult to resolve and we solve this issues by leveraging on tools such as maps, artificial intelligence & algorithms to understand and manage routing of packages more effectively.”

“Also, business owners can use our technology to get customers pretty much anything from flowers to invitations down to bulky items such as furniture. We also have an API that integrates the products workflow directly into each merchant’s checkout process. We employ a revenue sharing model as our DropBuddies earn 80% of the delivery fee.”http://innovation-village.com/introducing-dropbuddies-peer-peer-package-delivery-service/

Right in the heart of Ondo town in Ondo State, Southwestern Nigeria, is a social enterprise that preaches and practices environmental sustainability. They have a non-profit advocacy arm that teaches students and other members of the public, to adopt more sustainable and environmentally friendly practices. The social enterprise initiative is called The Green Institute. It was established by Adenike Akinsemolu.

The Green Institute currently offers academic programs in Sustainable Science and Technology, Sustainable Business and Entrepreneurship, and Sustainable Social Research and History, using a variety of onsite and online learning channels.

So far, they have trained 5,561 youths nationwide, and recycled 4,958 tons of waste. Currently, about 518 students have enrolled with them to undertake about 45 different courses. They also have a unique programme called Trash for Education Scheme that allows students to earn credits for valuable wastes that they collect. The trash credits can then be redeemed for books and tuition fees. The commitment to purchase the trash is made by the state government and private corporations who will buy it at a set price from the institute.

“Our goal is not only to empower young people to be environmentally aware and to adopt green practices but to also become social change makers in their various communities.” - Adenike Akinsemolu, Founder http://www.greeninstitute.ng/about/green-glance/

Dr Femi Kuti

https://www.kangpe.com/

Femi Kuti, Ope Olumeken and Matthew Mayaki are three friends who launched Kangpe an online medtech app in Nigeria, but Femi Kuti came up with the idea originally while working as a medical doctor, within the country.

He recalls that friends and patients would constantly call him up, or send over text messages about their symptoms, so it occurred to him that it would be a good idea to turn the advice he was giving out for free, into a startup company. Kangpe is an online platform, that allows Africans to contact doctors remotely, using their mobile devices. Medical staff answer patients' questions for a small fee, or refer the customer/patient to a doctor, for further assistance.

Kangpe now operates in Ghana and Kenya as well, potentially serving a combined population of roughly 245 million people at the moment. According to Kuti, the startup has so far on-boarded 60,000 users.

Of course, it’s not the first to come up with the idea. Those in the U.S. can access similar remote physician platforms like Doctor on Demand or the text-based First Opinion for a medical question. There’s also MedAfrica in Kenya, Matibabu in Uganda and Hello Doctor, which currently operates in about 10 African countries.

However, with the fast-paced adoption of new technology and growth trajectory of several African nations, the field is still pretty wide for pulling in potential customers.

Kuti also points out the platforms working in the U.S. don’t exactly translate to care in Africa. “Google doesn’t know about African disease,” he says.

Kangpe has already sparked some social interest and has forged a partnership with Facebook as the top service on Facebook’s Free Basics program for Nigeria. https://techcrunch.com/2017/03/17/kangpe-is-a-mobile-service-connecting-africa-to-healthcare/

Silas Adekunle’s Reach Robotics Has Signed A Sales Deal With Apple
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Remember Silas Adekunle, the founder/CEO of Reach Robotics, and developer of the world's first augmented reality gaming robots? His company just signed an exclusive sales deal with Apple, and his robots, Mekamon, will now be exclusively sold in Apple stores in the UK and US.

The MekaMon robots currently sell for about $300/N108,000, and they combine real-world gameplay with augmented reality. They are made of plastic and are controlled using a smartphone app, which creates a virtual world for users to battle in and explore. The app is also used to upgrade the robots with new abilities.

The deal is similar to ones Apple has struck in the past, as it has looked to promote hardware startups that make particularly compelling use of its own technologies.

Silas, speaking to TechCrunch, described how the move came about:
"I demoed to (Apple) at GDC. One of our investors set up a meeting and they loved it. At the time, I didn’t know they were going to announce ARKit. When I saw it, it made sense. It was the right direction."
http://www.konbini.com/ng/lifestyle/silas-adekunles-reach-robotics-has-signed-a-sales-deal-with-apple/

Players will be able to choose between playing in the real world, or in augmented reality, and, according to Inverse, the robots will be able to move and use any object in the room to block or hide from attackers.

The robots are compatible with both iOS and Android, and can be personalized with both weapons and shields.

This Young Black Robotics Engineer and CEO Just Landed a Sweet Deal with Apple | Reach Robotics has raised $7.75M in funding to date | by Samara Lynn | Posted: November 15, 2017

Reach Robotics, an augmented reality gaming company that creates robots for both fun and STEM education, announced on Wednesday that it just made an exclusive deal with Apple to sell its line of MekaMon real-life gaming robots in Apple’s flagship U.S. and United Kingdom stores.

The robotics company’s CEO and co-founder is British-Nigerian Silas Adekunle. He is an engineer who graduated with First Class Honours from the University of the West of England, with a Bachelor of Science in robotics technology, and previously worked at GE Aviation and Infineon.

“A Quantum Leap Forward” in Augmented Reality Gaming"

“We’ve created an entirely new video gaming platform,” said Adekunle in a press release. “MekaMon straddles both the real and virtual worlds while taking the gaming experience beyond a player’s screen and turning their sitting room into a limitless robotic battle zone. MekaMon represents a quantum leap forward in the leveraging of augmented reality. Players can whip out their iPhone to battle their multi-functional, connected battlebots in the physical and virtual worlds at the same time.”

MekaMons are four-legged robots that players can control via a smartphone using a companion app for augmented reality gameplay. Multiple players can have their MekaMons battle each another. Each robot weighs a little over two pounds with dimensions of 11.8 by 11.8 by 5.9 inches. MekaMons can connect to each other via infrared signals and Bluetooth, allowing for co-op gaming.

The robots are powered by a rechargeable battery that provides up to an hour of gameplay. They are compatible with the iPhone, using the smartphone’s camera and infrared tracking capability for precise navigation.

I swear this is the coolest techy thing I've seen made by a Nigerian. Some people are putting dirty scraps together claiming that was how China started lmao grin

I know someday, a Yoruba diasporan will come back home and set up a proper automobile company. I know the reason why it hasn't happened yet is because the environment is not conducive enough for it.

@kn23h

Just a quick one...

I'm just seeing this info on Teragro which
skipped my eyes when I visited this thread
in the past.

Teragro Commodities Ltd is a subsidiary of Transcorp Group, and the C.E.O is Dupe
Olusola, an intelligent and delectable
mother of 2 girls and wife of the top lifestyle
and finance coach [Usi Ekiti-born Lanre
Olusola]. What Delta-born Tony Elumelu
did was to use top female executives
to oversee the different subsidies
of Transcorp Group including Awele, his Delta-born wife.

Since women have been found to be good
corporate managers, I think he took that
decision of using women to head specific
projects. I noticed a significant number
of top corporate Yoruba women heading
those subsidiaries.

All the best! smiley

JeetKuneDo:
Forbes released a list of 600 of the brightest young entrepreneurs, innovators and game changers under 30 in different sectors

Only 4 Nigerians made this list. 3 of them Yorubas. Adelanwa Adesanya for Healthcare, Iyin Aboyeji for Enterprise technology, Sabaah Folayan for Hollywood/Entertainment. The last person's name is Iyore Olaye. I have no idea where in Nigeria she's from but I know it's somewhere in the ND

https://www.forbes.com/30-under-30/2018/healthcare/#55c36771662b

Congrats to them

@JeetKuneDo

Iyore Noelle Olaye is a Nigerian-American
of Bini-Edo ancestry. Her father is Michael
Imafidon Olaye originally from Edo state in Nigeria, while her mum Christy
Anne Coates-Olaye is
an African-American.

Olaye is used by Bini people.

On the other hand, Mr. Segun Emmanuel Olaye, a 1984 Ukrainian-trained engineer who is also
married to a Ukrainian, is the founder of Ayoola Foods Ltd which he started in 1994 [makers
of the popular brand, Ayoola Poundo
Yam]. He schooled in Ifon in Ondo
state and he is Yoruba. Although I read
an interview his wife had with Punch
4 years ago and his Ukrainian wife
said non of their children speaks Yoruba
and that since her husband is very
fluent in Russian, they speak Russian
at home. That wasn't impressive to
me because there are children from
mixed Nigerian/Yoruba and Russian
or English heritages I know who speak
fluent Yoruba. Aduni Ade's father is Yoruba
and her mother is a white American
of mixed British and German origins.

So Olaye is a name used by Yoruba
and Bini people - maybe with slightly
different intonations.
