I am a doctor. I left Nigeria on the 18th of September, for greener pastures. After my exams, and when I am done completing my training, it is bye bye to Nigeria. Not after suffering and sacrificing would I come back to earn a pittance. Do you know that a 12 months house officer's salary cannot buy a new Toyota Camry.
I have finally decided to relieve myself of the blackmail that Medicine is a calling.
Omo, for Kaplan here we I deh study for the USMLEs, after the South Americans, nah Naija guys full here.
If you are a doctor reading this, do quick and cut out of Nigeria. Nigeria does not pay. Nigerians do not appreciate you. Nairaland typists would always be quick to bash you. Even if it is Sudan, go. Till Nigeria is brought to it's knees by the dearth if doctors, till they invest seriously in the health sector; infrastructure wise and renumeration-wise. For now, the government is not serious.
If you see hospitals here, omo, just Texas Children Hospital is bigger than Transcorp Hilton. Make I no talk now.

My worry nah just my mumsy, dad and other family in Naija. Issorite

Only 12 months? For new camry? 2017 abi 2013?

Any ethical, competent health worker hustling it out here in 9ja no nid check him name for register b4 him enter heaven. There are more Nigerian nurses in the EU than in Nigeria.

Later when some hear say consultant with 25+ yrs of exp. dey c 500k/mo, e go b lyk say na 1 big deal. Whereas he mate for yankee dey count 11m per month.

No big deal really!
What do you think is happening in other professions?
Engineering is worse! What percentage of engineering graduates ever get opportunity to practice engineering? They're sadly everywhere vying for the same jobs with accountants, sociologists, linguists, teachers and we think that is not a problem.

Try push her by fire by force, omo, for US, work deh plenty for medical personnel. The problem is just the exams and getting a spot for residency training. Once you break that limiting step, you are made for life.

Dublin might be better. Jordan has a high female literacy rate (the highest in the ME), but in the workforce, it is still the same ME drama.

Wish her the best of luck.

Unfortunately, there is a much more bigger picture, and problem of health is just one of them....It goes beyond building hospitals, etc....We have a long way to go to be in the league of super nations. If u want to go, Go. But, don't forget u trained in Nigeria and probably might not have been able to get into medical school abraod or afford it...Yet, you will now h=gain work as a doctor there without owing massive student loans!!!!

SO don't come here and say nonsense. What's happening in Africa is sad, but it's not entirely the fault of this generation. We were born into this mess. The great nations have gained greatness over a century of blood and sweat and we have to pay our dues b4 the tide can change. Oh, by the way, i'm a Doctor typing from UK

where in the world will you work as a house officer and be able to afford a new car after 1 year of housemanship, without taking a financial plan....This is not true....Here in Uk, a new car goes for maybe 18,000- 20,000+....and even if its fairly new, for a Honda accord, u will still spend about 14 or 15k.....with ur F2 salary, you will manage to save 10k ayear, if u are paying rent. The only way is to take a loan. Or after years of practice, you can pay cash. But the life is generally better, far far better. Not taht u can just buy new car as u please though

Currently training as a medical doctor in one of the Nigerian universities. This is my third degree (already have a B. Sc and an M. Sc. in Human Physiology). I'm married (3 years +)...and we've got a son. Due to the intense nature of my studies, I had to resign from work. The implication of this is obvious...money wahala. I've searched all over for a study loan...I no see...

If I tell you how I manage through school...eating N100 bread and water...or kuli-kuli and garri (only meal for the day!).... Sometimes, I can't even afford these (there are better days, though)... I'M NOT EXAGGERATING, please...

Our country has absolutely no plan for its future. Our so-called leaders are only interested in how much they can gather before their tenure runs out. Corruption, like a cancer cell, has metastasized all over!

Sincerely, I have plans to move my family over once I'm done. I'm qualified for the Australian PhD scholarship program. If not for my ambition of becoming a medical doctor, I for don dey there already...or close to being there.

Hopefully, someday, we would get things right in this country.

Unfortunately for us as a nation not only doctors are leaving,
Engineers with many years of valuable training/practice are also
leaving. I know other professionals are also leaving or preparing to do so.

The government has no statistics of professionals employed or unemployed,
entrepreneurs are on their own.

Its everyman to his own tent.

Oga, I understand your point. I don't know how it is, the cost issue of a thing. But one thing I have discovered staying here in the past two months is that things are expensive, like cutting my hair should take like 25dollars and that is like 8k or so Nigerian money. I buy good Todd shoes in Nigeria 12-15k, but here small Aldo shoes goes for 80$, that's like 24k. I don't understand why it is that way. I thought it should be cheaper in Oyibo. I don't understand.

Back to the point, the environment and the way the practice is structured is in such a way that in Nigeria, you comparatively should start earning better from house job, unlike in the US where even though you might be earning supposedly 50k dollars per year, as a resident, you would practically spend it on your daily leaving and not get a chance to save something significant because of the cost of leaving. The system works in the west, but you got to pay for it.
Now when you are done with the residency, there is a sudden upsurge in your earning power and quality of life, that you can easily PAY for a 35k dollars (convert it in Naira) neat BMW, down payment, within a year. Yes, within a year. But you see that resident and consultant in Nigeria, do you think his pay or earning power or quality of life jumps up? Capital 'NO'. This is just like a Nigerian doctor doing locum in the UK, with a white resident, and they might be making something similar, bit after residency, the Citizen just dusts you salary-wise, while you are stuck in locum.
If you trained or worked in Nigeria, you would understand where I am coming from. Residency renumeration in the US is structured to still be like a school. (I know Naija is supposed to be same, but the way the pay package is, economy has made it that if you are earning like 200k in a month, in your mind you would be like I am balling.
