As a result of the 1959 parliamentary elections, the Northern Peoples Congress (NPC) from the Northern Region of N...igeria under the leadership of Sir Ahmadu Bello (the Sardauna of Sokoto and Premier of the Northern Region) became the country's leading political party with 134 seats out of the 312 seats in the Parliament. National Council of Nigeria and Cameroun (NCNC) based in the Eastern Region of Nigeria under the leadership of Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe obtained 89 seats in the same election. Chief Obafemi Awolowo led Action Group (AG) in the West, elected 73 members to the parliament in 1959. The NPC and NCNC (Chief Nnamdi Azikwe's party) coalesced to form the first government of the newly independent Nigeria with Alhaji Abubakar Tafawa Balewa (the deputy leader of the NCP) as the Nigerian Prime Minister.http://community.vanguardngr.com/forum/topics/the-crisis-that-truncated-the-first-republic 6 Likes 4 Shares |

Zik was not a party to Awolowo going to jail and infact worked with the party of awolowo, a yoruba man by the name akintola worked with ahmadu bello to jail awolowo and the sentence was handed to awolowo by justice sowemimo 11 Likes 2 Shares |

asorocker: asorocker: Zik's judgment in politics was schoolboy. I like the part where he was put under house arrest... Had he accepted Awo's offer of alliance earlier, he would have been Prime Minister and Commander-in-Chief, and Nigeria's history would have been much different. In any case, whether Zik was party to Awo's incarceration or not is still debatable, and that Zik worked with AG (after Awo was already in jail) does not sway the debate. 6 Likes |

Zik should have simply resigned from the NPC-NCNC coalition government if he truly had no hand in Awolowo's incarceration and the unconstitutional reinstatement of Akintola to Western Region Premiership position by the government. Meanwhile the Zik who initially rejected Awolowo's AG-NCNC coalition offer on some very flimsy and meaningless excuses later turned around to form the UPGA alliance with AG while it was too late due to Awo's imprisonment. Zik had to fight alone against the Northern Oligarchy's rigging of 1962 census because the Awolowo who would have added an invaluable momentum to the Southern side in that fight had already been weakened by the Zik/Balewa coalition government. I keep asking why Zik would prefer to form a government with the Born-to-rule chanting Northern Oligarchy against an all South ideologically based alliance that would have in no time placed Nigeria on the path of rapid development and industrialization. 11 Likes |

ClintonJr: The usual disease of assuming that it takes only a Yoruba person to see through the naivete and myopia of Zik. Zik signed all the documents with which Balewa implemented Awolowo's jail sentence. Igbos and their incurable self enslavement disposition towards Gambaris. 5 Likes |

Deadlytruth: Your question is a no-brainer, am afraid. The sardunna was not too keen on the concept of one nigeria where his educationally-challenged and backward people -his main constituency will be at the wrong end of the economic ladder hence his position was simply, "give me ultimate power in the new nation or else i walk away with my people". Unfortunately, at the time, only zik and his covetous people were chanting "one nigeria/ pan-Africanism" like an agama lizard who, having fell off a tall tree and believing he's alone decided to nod his head in self-congratulation . Zik, himself admitted years later that, had he formed a coalition with his southern neighbour, the sardunna will have immediately and without much ado, taken his people out of the new nation. But zik and his fake "one nigeria enthusiasts" would have none of it. They want the northerners who incidentally have never liked the ibos and have never shy away from expressing these negative emotions in more violent forms, first in 1945 and then again in 1953, as an integral part of the new nation. Meanwhile, their (ibos') sole objective is the absolute domination of the other groups in the new nation but typical to form, there mouth ran out on their myopic cognitive processor which culminate in the unenviable but highly predictable scenario before our very dear eyes extantly, where "the hunter has turn into the hunted " LOBATAN!!! N.B: Greed and covetousness is not an endearing or profitable trait. 11 Likes 2 Shares |

Akintola betrayed awolowo is nothing new. Akintola saw the kind of man awolowo was hence he teamed up with balewa to jail awolowo. Trust awo at your own peril. |

Deadlytruth: You probably will continue to wallow in this ignorant stream of thought if you do not brush up on your knowledge base. The question you should first pose to yourself is "when did NNDP break from AG? The formation of NNDP by the rebellious Action Group stalwarts led to Awolowo's incarceration. 2 Likes |

Duru1: And you surely will continue to wallow in self delusion till you decide to rely on logic and refrain from abusive language in debates. The question you should rather ask yourself is which predated which between Zik's decision to coalesce with NPC in 1960, and the formation of NNDP in 1962. The part of my post which you bolded in my mention would suggest that your response was going to explain why Zik preferred the North in 1960. But Ironically your response was totally off the mark as it was about the creation of NNDP which happened in 1962 and therefore could only have been an effect and not a cause of Zik's 1960 decision. The causes of an event naturally predates the event and not the other way round. What happened in 1999 could not have been caused by what is currently happening now in 2017. 6 Likes 1 Share |

Akintola ruthlessly pursued Awolowo to the extent of collaborating with the Sarduana and Tafawa Balewa to get him jailed for coup plotting in Calabar! If it was that convinient, Awolowo would have been killed, because at a point his movements even within the western region was targeted.. Awolowo was by far the most popular politician from Westrrn Nigeria at this period and the wreckless decimation of his political machinery by the Akintola/Sarduana/Balewa combo, led to riots and murders in western Nigerian streets, otherwise termed "operation wetie" . The idea of imprisoning Awolowo was perpetuated to get him out of the way before the general elections of 1964 which Akintola and the Sarduana rigged beyond belief with the help of the Tafawa government! Zik being the president REFUUSED to call their party to come and form the government for ONE full year because of all the violence, the killings and the riggings.. By the time the time Zik agreed to call the socalled winning coalition to form a government, the evils associated with that election have become so pronounced that most Nigerians wanted change..That was where the country was on the night of Jan 15th. .. Revisionists will never mention the fact that Azikiwe stood against the rigged elections for a full year and refused Akintolas emergence as the leader of Western Nigeria politics over Awolowo for a full year! Nobody wants to talk about "operation wetie", which went on for do long while Balewa looked the other way, just as Buhari is looking the other way today while the Fulani killings go on unabated! Neither will they mention the fact that Awolowo, who was sent to prison by Tafawa Balewa/Akintola/Sarduana coalition, was dutifully serving his prison sentence in an Eastern Nigerian city named Calabar, as at the night of the January 15th 1966 coup! Essentially, if the plan was to waste all the leaders of the other regions as the narrative suggests these days, a lonely Awolowo in an Eastern prison was the most vulnerable.. But he wasn't touched! 3 Likes |

The league between Ladoke Akintola/Remilekun Fani- Kayode with the central Balewa government led to the final cascade of events leading to Awo's incarceration. Hausa-fulani hate anything that threatened their grip- hold on political power hence always using the divide- and-rule card. 1 Like |

Deadlytruth:of course anything coming from Ojukwu can be comfortably taken as propaganda. Besides, it is expected for Ojukwu to malign Zik; they both Stood for freedom but under opposing ideologies. Zik was pan-Nigerian, Ojukwu was separatist. Ojukwu is one man I respect so much(and I am not even Igbo), but for the sake of fairness, I take anything he's got to say about Zik with a pinch of salt. 1 Like |

Casham: Ojukwu was as well no fan of Awolowo and Ahmadu Bello. But sincerity demanded that he described them for whom they really were as regards the question of disposition to one-Nigeria project. To be nearer home Ojukwu never considered either Ahmadu Bello or Awolowo as tribalists, but as realists who put their people's interest first in a Nigeria that was nothing more than a British experiment which, from glaring evidences, was more likely to fail than succeed, hence not deserving any strong commitment or sacrifice on the part of any of the component ethnicities. Only Azikiwe chose to close his eyes to that glaring and naked reality in pursuit of the vainglorious 'Zik of Africa' title by which he ended up placing his kinsmen in harm's way. Else how could Zik (a graduate of Anthropology for that matter) be the only one espousing the forced cohabitation of different peoples with diverse and in fact diametrically opposing cultural philosophies and value systems into a contraption against their will? Contrary to your perception that Ojukwu's position on Zik is propaganda, the opinion of nearly every other independent political analysts perfectly corroborate Ojukwu's. If you know what the Anthropology course content entails, you would realize that Zik's position was in stark conflict with the tenets of his profession as regards the approach to nation building. Even IPOB recently disrupted an award ceremony for illustrious Igbo sons the moment Zik was announced as one of the would-be posthumous beneficiaries of the award. The reason IPOB gave for their action is that Zik's ideology and stance on issues is not worth any eulogy let alone emulation by any Igbo youth. They added that had Zik not taken the position he took but aligned his thoughts and ideologies with those of Ahmadu Bello and Awolowo, Nigeria would have evolved differently to the good of everyone today. Now I guess you know Zik better than his own Igbo kinsmen who now see his stance on issues back then as the foundation for the Nigerian tragedy, right? 7 Likes 1 Share |
