Setting aside for a moment the aesthetics of looking fit, trim and healthy as opposed to being obviously overweight, the medical community is unanimous in supporting an ACTIVE lifestyle with LOTS of exercise, over a lifestyle characterized by overeating and sloth, as insurance against a very long list of illnesses and ailments. It therefore stands to reason that an internationally recognized beauty pageant would never welcome contestants whose physical girth exceeds that which is both internationally and medically preferable.

With respect to South African's propensity for excessive alcohol consumption, I speak as an eye-witness when I say that I am yet to meet a South African citizen of the black race, who is not instinctively DRIVEN to get extremely drunk, loud and obnoxious, on a very regular basis. For sure, alcohol addicts exist in all societies on this green planet, but I would bet my net worth that there is no country in existence that can match South Africa in the national sport of drinking whilst singing and shouting, to the point of requiring medical attention. In this regard, South Africa occupies a league of its own.
