u don't need any educated expert. all this can be learnt in one week if u take it serious or as a business full detailed can be done via YouTube. who educated our forefathers in 12th, 13th, to 19th century

do you know how many times our forefathers faced famine and extinction. do you know many of the crops our forefathers planted have been breeded out for new improved varieties due to so many problems. The countries that are excelling in agriculture are not doing it the way their forefathers did it. All the countries that are stuck with their forefather methods are struggling. our forefathers did their bits and their time has passed, new times, new seasons new methods. Abi you still dey live for forefather houses and wearing 12th clothes.

well, I wouldn't want to insult you because I know that you are ignorant about the field of agriculture generally. It is because we are still practising agriculture the way our forefathers practiced in the aforementioned centuries, we are where we are today in Nigeria and Africa at large. I would have loved to enlighten you more but I have limited time right now. Cheers!

I wonder oooo.. The reason why I don't want to scold the guy is because, he might still be a neophyte who doesn't know anything yet other than #1000 subscription data.

The abstract and physical aspect can be learnt in months but the science behind it will take longer than just months.
What I mean is this... The planting, weeding, harvesting and other basic farm yard practice can be learned in months but it will take more of practice, reading and field experiments to be able to control pest and diseases, take decisions with tangible reasons and perform excellently as a farmer hence the reason why we spend 5 years studying in university.
However the basics can be learnt in months but in case you are face with a new threat on your farm or an unfamiliar situation you will need the help of an educated expert.

Enlighten us more on the science behind your choice of study.

It will go a long way in educating us on the importance of agricultural personnel and their application.

BTW @larryupsy, heaping blames for what? Everybody is an expert in their field, no need to act haughty.

Another way you guys do get it all wrong. Nonetheless, I would still refrain from heaping blames. The thought that Agriculture is all about the basics learnt while in secondary school, or perhaps being all about what we see a lay man do must have been instrumental to our stance. However, if you must know, if not for some of these would-be professional guys toiling now, these are the probable things you will be facing by now.
1. In bid to drive commercialization, some plants would have developed resistance to some of these herbicides, land fertility, degradation and lots would have been in full force, some pest must have become resistant and continue to wreck havoc to crops on fields, yield and performance of crops must have turn out incredibly low amidst others. The implication is not far-fetched. Some of these guys, will turn out to work as Plant toxicologists, Crop protectionists, soil fertility experts, Plant breeders, etc. All usually groomed basically as Agronomist to address these. Guess you should start seeing reasons for spending 5 years now
2. To ensure all these are sustainably done and achieve the end target, some folks needs to be trained to understand all these nitty gritty and also be trained to deliver same to the industry. They are usually trained as an Agricultural Extensional. You will again agree with me the need to spend those years.
3. More importantly, some folks must work to ensure the right human-oriented policies are formulated to ensure its sustainability and more importantly having the right imlact on economy and developments . Of course if it contributes nothing to human, it can as well be deemed useless. They need also to spend years to understand the basics to have these done.

I am so glad for people like you.
We need massive education and support in agriculture. I personally believe it is one area Nigeria as a nation needs to pay serious attention to and guarantee food security and some massive employment.

"If you make massive employment possible especially in Agriculture (food production/preservation/processing) in all states of the federation and provide substantial power infrastructure to support it, it will be a good beginning point. Then create/strengthen security and surveillance systems in the states. A lot can be done if our people in government are patriotic enough."

Government policies and support can achieve these with foundation and support from worthy institutions.

When GEJ created the 6 Federal Universities, The one given to Ekiti (now Federal University Oye) was taken to Ikole-Ekiti by Gov. Kayode Fayemi. Ikole being the biggest local govt in Ekiti state but without any major infrastructure or govt establishment. The site for the University has already been allocated, only for the senator presenting Oye/Ikole Federal constituency, Ayo Arise or whatever is name is, who happens to be from Oye Ekiti, played politics and had the University moved to his home town in Oye, The pple kicked, even the Gov was against it, but he used his federal connection to take the university to Oye. Due to the increased hostilities between the two communities, peace-lovers all over Ekiti intervened and a faculty or so was situated in Ikole, and thats why you have the Ikole Campus of the Federal University Oye Ekiti.

All this could only happen because the most prominent Oba in Ekiti state for most of his reign, Oba Adetunla Adeleye (of blessed memory) was no more. Arise couldnt even have dreamt of his act if the Late Elekole was to be alive, he was that influential and powerful, one of the sort-after monarchs in Yorubaland by the Federal government. He was one of the persons who had earlier fought for the establishment of a tertiary institution in the local government.

Its so pathetic that an elected person could cause so much bloodshed between the people who elected him just because he wont allow due protocol to take place and having a rather selfish orientation.
