Honestly, when I look at the situation here and compare it to a few cities I have lived in, take for a example the dessert city of Ajman, I see an attitudinal issue here. We know the govt here doesn't care because they have misplaced priorities. I wonder why most doctors can not buy a cheap Chinese defribilator that cost less than $900?

A greater percent of death in Nigeria are as a result of mis-diagnosis by doctors. For them every illness is typhoid and malaria fever. A recent case was a patient in Jos who died last two weeks due to TB. But for most of the time his doctor has been treating pneumonia. The issue came to ahead when he lost consciousness and was rushed to catholic hospital. Quite an avoidable death.

We really should not wait for the health ministry or govt to help us run the structure of health facilities. There are head doctors at each of these facilities. They can put up a structure that makes emergency care a critical pillar of health care by having a doctor on standby and also give these doctors enough time to attend to their private practice since they are not regularly paid by the govt.

Is manpower an issue? Do we have enough doctors and nurses? Don't you think the policy of making access to education so stringent is leading to lack of adequate man power. Doctors and nurses are leaving the country, why don't we let in more students into the course to compensate?

Finally, I see the age-old Nigeria problem: mismanagement. No matter how low govt funding, the brains in these institutions can come up with the best strategy to make best use of the paucity. Many poor countries like Cuba still manage to run a good health care system.

Thats the problem with Nigerians, every body acting like 'just the police only' is bad.

They slavishly like comparing Nigerian policemen to USA police forgetting that if you bring a USA police officer to work in Nigeria, under current circumstances, he will prefer to commit suicide.

the consultant is not a demi God. Emergency care hardly ever gets to a consultant. Because of the word "consultant" When a consultant enters the emergency ward as they do, they come not to stabilise a patient. but to give a definite line of action on an already stable patient. A medical officer is trained to stabilise virtually any patient that is stabilisable.

we don't pray for evil tho... but a consultant is called such because of what I just explained.

And also the post didn't say there was no Medical House office, HO, JR or senior registrar to see. the report only said there was no consultant.

the consultant wasn't designed to live in the hospital. it's from the Senior Registrar down. the consultant on call is informed of every case that comes in tho.

but to stabilise and first treatment, it's from Medical Officer up the th Senior Registrar on call.

You have still not answered my question. If the house officer and registrars are unable to handle an emergency care patient, what stops them from calling in a consultant? Is he a demi-god? Shouldn't the most important thing be to rescue the patient, from harm or death? Did you ever hear the story of how the popular radio presenter ChazB died in 2014? He was rushed into emergency care section, but passed on due to the inexperience of the medical doctor on duty. The consultant was called, but never showed up. It is only in Nigeria that consultants are treated like mini-gods.
