What's up guys? This came at the right time. I was thinking of starting a whatsapp group for Nairaland writers, but this can serve the same purpose.

So, what I want to ask you guys this morning is this... Why are there no rich fiction writers in Nigeria?

I was just having a conversation with my friend in my house just now... He is into online branding, and we were talking about how Nigeria has such a large population, which supports other forms of art (music, movies, even painters), but authors don't make shitt (pardon my French).

This is sickening, and it needs to change. We put in as much work as other artists, why don't we make even a quarter or a tenth of what they make?

Yes, Nigerians don't really read, but someone like NaijaSingleGirl was able to capture a lot of Nigerians with her humor and controversial subject matters. But since she released her book (29 and single or something like that) two years ago, the book has sold just 800 copies on Okadabooks. I was really disappointed in her sales, judging from her popularity and all the promo she did before the book was released, I was expecting it to have sold at least a couple of thousands of copies.

We have a population of 180 million. And in Lagos alone, there are like 20 million people. What can be done to turn things around so fiction authors make a good living from their works?
Re: 2017-2018 Chatbox by stuff46(m): 12:06pm On Dec 11, 2017
Nigerians find it hard to pay for literature works both online and offline but like reading. The population does not matter at any time to the quantity of literature fiction work that is sold and hence, makes this writers same from day one. Outside Nigerian , writers sell there work as the price is moderate and affordable for the readers and general public.

The low standard of living of the population contributes as books cannot be afforded by people who wish to read them and in the end they are dissuaded from trying to read and some serious ones, wait for free piece.

To achieve a good audience and improve wealth, mehn serious work needs to be done. Even PDF sales have not been encouraging, so I basically think there is no way out from me now

Very true. Nice breakdown. I'm looking for the best means to get people to start paying for writers books, even if it is as low as 50 Naira per book/story.

Dedication is actually the key for any one who likes to read, price should not be a hindrance for a serious mind.

The urgency to make money actually make writers forget this problems and go into production, (Note: I am not dissuading from production) but they need to consider the average means of survival of the population to set their price economically (actually they do) but still need to make provision for lower price.

Another reason for lack of money is publication or advertisement- which is one of the greater factor to consider before and after production. Many writers get dissuaded after few attempts when advertising their work. I spent more time advertising my business than I even spend to do my daily work, and this pays off. Forget how long you have spent or even how much you spend when making advertisement, if there is need they need to pay for adverts (when it calls for).

What platform was he using to sell his books? Okadabooks? Amazon? Apple iBooks?
