N'DJAMENA (Reuters) - Chad's military said it had carried out air strikes against Boko Haram bases in Nigeria in retaliation for twin suicide bombings in Chad this week that killed at least 34 people, but the announcement was strongly rejected by Nigeria.

The air raids caused heavy human and material damage to six of the Islamist militants' bases, Chad's military said late on Wednesday, without providing further details.

Nigerian authorities denied reports that the attacks had taken place on its soil, saying they were likely to have instead hit targets in neighbouring Niger.

"The claim that the Chadian military have conducted air strikes against six terrorist camps in Nigeria is not correct," said military spokesman Major General Chris Olukolade.

In Vietnam the Americans thought the era of dogfighting are over so they equipped their phantoms with missiles alone without gunpods. This was just 2 decades after WW2 when air to air missile technology was in its in infancy. The Americans learnt a bitter lesson. The next time the USAF went into action it flattened whatever stood in its way. Truth be told what is the sense in spending $500,000 training one pilot, even sending some to war colleges abroad only to send them to their death in an aircraft that stands no chance against a 4th Gen fighter.

But i gotta ask. What exactly is preventing the NAF from acquiring modern combat aircrafts? Its been 12 years and a decade of war, what exactly is the problem. We trying buying combat jets from the West but they end up embarassing us. We announce several deals with Eastern countries and over time it fizzles away. Rather we are borrowing Super Mushank from Pakistan. In the 80's Nigeria produced several prototypes of its home built Albatross. 20 years down the line we are borrowing trainers. This is not normal. Something is really wrong somewhere.

Yes. We should not buy trainers because we have too many of them. Its just we have converted our trainers to combat aircrafts. Which is beyond ridiculous. Do you realise from 2014 to 2016 Nigeria's annual defence budget has been close to $6 billion? Where is the money going? This is not ego my friend? Countries not at war are modernising at a faster pace. From 2002 its been nearly 20 years of continuous fighting yet its taking us half a century to replace the junk we rely on to protect our territorial sovereignty? Jeeez

what is the turnaround time of both of these aircraft's ?

once they land after a mission how much time will it take to run maintenance , perform mandatory inspection checks , replace engine if needed , refuel , rearm , preflight checks etc ?

technical term is maintenance hours per flight hour

the more time they r on ground the more the enemy will pose a risk

the more time they r in air the more the enemy will be at risk

Tell us how many time the NAF have bombed boko haram in chad and compare that to the number of times chadians have bombed boko haram in Nigeria. sometimes you just have to let something happen in order to have your way.

Guy you are confused. A single US/French aircraft carrier in the Gulf of guinea is more of a treat than having a armed drone base in Niger, Mali, Camerron and Chad put together.

The NAF strike fleet today consists of between 9 to 16 Alpha jets and a handful L-39"s. They were initially acquired to train pilots. Yes there is no harm in weaponizing them and all, but to rely on jet trainers as the workhorse of the NAF strike asset? For two decades? Cmon. Even thw F-7 were a stopgap measure. You cannot possibly justify why Africa"s largest economy will rely jet trainers as combat planes. We are 3rd or 4th defence spenders on the continent. You base your assessment or requirements on the Boko Haram insurgency. Should the say arise where we are forced to defend against an external foe invading our territory, we will be handsomely embarrassed. Nigeria has no excuse, we should be in per with Egypt or Algeria. Its not ego, its where we should be. Can yoi count the number of times Cameroonian troops stormed Nigerian villages, killed dozens of civilians and burnt down whole villages? They got away with it because they know our capabiities. These people are not naive. We are a continental powerhouse with huge responsibilities. If Nigeria burns ECOWAS is finnished....and you know it is the desire of the powers that be for that to happen.

NAF REORGANIZES AIR COMBAT STRUCTURE IN NORTHEAST, SENDS FEMALE OFFICER OVERSEAS FOR FIGHTER PILOT TRAINING

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has reorganized its air combat structure in the Northeast for increased operational efficiency. The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, disclosed this during his opening remarks at the CAS Fourth Quarter Conference, which commenced at NAF Headquarters today, 11 December 2017. According to the CAS, the Air Component Commander has been replaced with a Commander Air Task Force (CATF), an Air Vice Marshal (a 2-star General), who reports to the overall Theatre Commander. The new CATF is Air Vice Marshal Idi Lubo, who was serving as the Air Component Commander. The NAF has also appointed three Divisional Air Liaison Officers (DALO) for the 3 Armoured Division as well as 7 and 8 Divisions of the Nigerian Army in the Northeast. The whole idea is to ensure a better coordination of air efforts with ground operations. Besides, the NAF has appointed an Air Liaison Officer for the Theatre Command to further limit the possibility of gaps in operations. Air Marshal Abubakar further stated that a Nigerian female pilot, for the first time in the history of the NAF, was on the way to the United States Air Force for training as a fighter pilot. The female pilot had earlier this year graduated as the overall best pilot during ab-initio training at 401 Flying Training School Kaduna.

In terms of progress made by the NAF in the preceding 3 months, the CAS indicated that 24 pilots had completed their training and would soon be deployed for operational duties. The NAF had also reactivated additional platforms which had been deployed for operations in the Northeast. In particular, one Bell 412 Helicopter had been added to the NAF fleet while work on the second Bell Helicopter would be completed before the end of December 2017. Additionally, one Mi-35P Helicopter would be ready for operation before the end of January 2018, as the overhauled engines needed for its reactivation had arrived in Nigeria. Air Marshal Abubakar added that the reactivation was being done locally to further build the capacity of NAF technical personnel while equally saving cost. Accordingly, the NAF invited foreign technical experts to execute the project in conjunction with its engineers and technicians. The CAS further reported that 2 additional Mi-35M helicopters recently procured for the NAF by the Federal Government had been test flown in Russia and should be operational in Nigeria by February 2018. In all, 5 combat helicopters are being added to enhance ongoing NAF counterinsurgency efforts.

To boost the strategic and operational airlift capability of the NAF, Air Marshal Abubakar stated that the Periodic Depot Maintenance (PDM) of C-130H Aircraft NAF 917 had commenced in Lagos. The PDM was also being done locally by foreign technical experts in conjunction with NAF personnel towards building capacity of NAF technical personnel. Similarly, the Service life of C-130H aircraft NAF 913 had been successfully extended. In the area of Force Protection, the NAF was reported to have trained additional Regiment personnel as Special Forces and deployed them to the Northeast for operations alongside other surface forces. Moreover, the NAF had graduated the second set of participants from its Air War College in Makurdi. The new graduates are expected to add value to the Service in general and in operational activities. In ending his opening remarks, the CAS enjoined the senior officers to be frank in their contributions, identify emerging challenges and proffer ways of further moving the NAF forward.

The aim of the CAS Fourth Quarter Conference 2017, which holds from 11-12 December 2017, is to appraise progress attained in the NAF since the last Quarterly meeting held in Kaduna 3 months ago. The idea behind the Conference was also to obtain inputs from the bottom to the top such that ideas would be shared towards moving the NAF forward. Participants in the Conference include the Commandant of the Armed Forces Command and Staff College Jaji, the Chief of Defence Intelligence, Branch Chiefs from HQ NAF, Air Officers Commanding, Group Managing Director of NAF Holding Company, Commandant of the Air Force Institute of Technology Kaduna and all Air Vice Marshals serving in Abuja. Other participants were Managing Directors of various NAF companies, Directors from HQ NAF and NAF field commanders from its various bases. The Conference is still ongoing in Abuja.
