T72 isn't even a bad tank. The T90, at it's base model, is literally a T72B. Having a T90 or T72 will not substantially effect any progress in the NE. Boko Haram are not shooting high performance ATGMs they are probably stuck with only base model RPG-7s or maybe an upgraded RPG-7V if they are lucky. Both of those will struggle with the front of a T72. Sure they can get in through the side but so can just about anything can get through the side of a modern MBT.

Now as for the pics of T72s in bad state. Most of those issues only look superficial. Missing a splashguard will not effect the tanks performances (just makes it a pain to clean and requires more frequent cleaning). Missing ERA blocks is a simple fix and isn't even worth mentioning. The only proof to the tanks falling apart would be to mention the readiness percentage of an armored division but if it's anything like the US (and I'm sure it is) you'd have to be the unit quartermaster or in the Headquarters unit to know that info as that's highly confidential.

Now imo if there were to be more tanks bought I would say either buy some high quality T72Bs and T90s or go with a Chinese Type 99. NATO is out of the question so no point even considering them and getting. T14 is unlikely since the Russians are having issues funding production for themselves. I doubt they would start selling T14s to anyone else.

The pot holes on Lagos Benin expressway started at the size of a rat, Nigerian government said its not a big problem, road must spoil when its used everyday. Till the pot holes increased to size of a cow and hundreds of Nigerians died in accidents and some robbed raped killed by armed robbers when they slow down to climb in and out of those pot holes at night.

Keep defending NA T-72 that has many parts of armour fallen off exposing the soldiers inside to Boko Haram RPG hits that will blow up all the ammunition storage in the tank and burn our troops to ashes. Their lives don't matter, it's not your own son that will die, and it's not brigadier generals or senators that will die in our T-72 that now have less armour than the intelligent white man made to protect weak points of the tank.

You guys are rewriting the mode of mechanized warfare. Jeez! Tanks in COIN? Really?
The T-72 you see today is because we lack proper mechanized assets. No one is talking IFVs and AFVs.

wink

1.loss of surprise element , tanks r noisy , targets alerted
2.big logistic footprint , places a burden on operations , eats into efficiency
3.tank gunnery is hard pressed to locate fix and fire on small sized fleeting targets
4.risk of fratricide due to the nature of ammo used and close in encounters
5.demoralizing effect , losing even a single tank will effect the operations , while the tank protects u , who protects the tank
6.limited all round observation , totally minimized during hatch down conditions
7.no 'frontline' , in COIN ops hostiles r smart enough to pop up where u least expect them , some times everywhere
8.tank can be overwhelmed by dispersed dismounted insurgents converging in close proximity especially while utilizing 'hugging' tactic
9.there is a limit to gun barrel depression and elevation, can be exploited by smart insurgents based on terrain etc
10.susceptible to limitations imposed by operational environment
11.tanks r generally used as PIVOTs during coin ops, immobilize the pivot , generally everything gets immobilized , not necessarily though
12.false sense of invulnerability , not necessarily though
etc
etc

note : it is my personal opinion , i may be wrong

Fufubear, we have to start thinking long-term. ISIS is under intense pressure in the middle east, slowly they are moving towards other safe havens where they can operate with impunity. Nigeria is on their top destination. What if ISIS decides to gift the BHT some ATGMs or some other deadly weapons in their inventort? Is that when we will start discussing buying T-90? If we don't finish this Boko mess now it will be disastrous in the future.
Sure. You can think long term. Long term doesn't say T72 is junk and needs to be replaced now though. T72 and T90 have the same gun and fire the same ammo. They both can mount the same armor package too. With the T90 you only really get some other upgrades like SHTORA (which is pretty expensive to operate). The cost to upgrade to T90 isn't justified. Besides, I'd rather go China instead.

The noose on ISIS is tightening. They are not really in the position to be gifting high quality ATGMS.

Look, there is no hole in any armor plate on the T72 because that would be a deadlining fault for any nation (because at that point the tank doesn't serve it's purpose). The tank in the pictures are either missing sideskirts or splash guards. Those are all routine/optional features. That's not a sign of a vehicle in bad shape, it's a sign of a vehicle being used in the field. War isn't clean, go look at real operational photos of ww2 or any other large conflict. Not all the vehicles will be in factory fresh condition because it's simply impossible.

I actually went through his post again before quoting you and the only place he mentioned Abram tank was when he was attesting to the fact that they are performing badly against the Houthis in Yemen. Maybe, I missed the part that you are all talking about.
Thank you.I mentioned the point because Supreme Court who obviously does not know how to argue a point without insulting somebody believes he and only he knows the answer to all of Nigeria's problem.
He has become an amusement commodity on this blog where if you disagree with his comments somehow you are less of a Nigerian.
Tank Technology at it's base has not changed since WW2.
The infatuation he has with the T90 simply shows his ignorance. The enemy we are fighting at best has a few stolen apcs and Toyota trucks.
Nigeria is fighting an asymmetric war not pitched Tank Battles.
An Army officer came on this blog and totally discredited him .I discredited with the numerous ambushes that the Yemenis and Houthis have had on the Heaviest Tank in the World the M1 Abrams his response ? They are old Tanks Lol.

By all means buy new Tanks. The war will end when the main leaders of bh are captured or killed and that comes from better intelligence and better Military commanders.
Maj Gen Nichols is an example of what is needed to end this war.

You didn't follow from the beginning I guess. SupremeCourt claimed Nigeria's T-72 tanks are falling apart and he was asked to prove his claims. He ended up trying to make things look like T-72 tanks are useless in COIN and we all hate T-90 tanks because we are black men, we don't like progress etc.

He successfully moved the discussion to his comfort zone while dodging the main question he was asked.

For me $1 billion isn't that much and buying some Russian SU-30/mig 35, yak_130, and more MRAPs to replace the hilux will help the military a lot. We haven't even talked of other procurement/expenses the military can't run from and the money is almost finished. Someone is here claiming T-90 must be bought because T-72 are falling apart because of 1pic he saw on Internet.

Those amour parts falling off missing from Nigerian T-72 tanks are easy entrance hole that Boko Haram RPG go take enter reach the ammunition storage of T-72 which is the deadly weak point of all T-72 tanks, it will blow up the whole tank from inside and burn all our soldiers to ashes. Same way the idiiot NAF air marshals were defending alpha jet that has no armour until wing commander Hedema was shot down like bush hunter shoot pigeons from thsy sky, and a university graduate pilot was beheaded in public by illiterate terrorists and video shown to the whole world on internet. You people never learn, black man is born backward, you will never ever learn lesson.

T-72 is not bad? There are free You Tube videos of T-72 ammunition storage blowing up itself and burning all the soldiers inside to ashes because terrorists are now wiser than armies.

Common sense doesn't seems to be common. As you can see the ERA are being hit by RPG.

Mr, all this English stuff and dumb write-up of yours makes no meaning. Priorities first, we have enough tanks to pound BHT.

Yes we need to start equipping our military for future threats but as for now, we need to take our boys out of those skinny Toyota and get then MRAPS, AFV, IFV to pound BHT positions.

A whole shilka is more dangerous in the North East than a T-14 armata . So we need to equip IFV, AFV and not tanks for now.

When getting tanks, we should get some ACV with tank killer capabilities.

T-90 has the same ammunition protection. The issue with the ammo of the T-72/T-90 is it's carousel. That was only changed on the T-14. Both tanks use the same 2a46 125mm gun. You can equip that other stuff on a T-72B (aka a T-90).
