I believe his repeated run for the presidency was to spite Babangida who truncated his first presidency, it was an ego thing for him cause he was obviously unprepared for the job despite his numerous attempts.

He turned my childhood upside down. All the big department stores closed down within a year of his coup! The economy nose dived, very long queues sprang up at the banks, water scarcity became the norm, and very long blackouts without NEPA warning people became normal. Someone (a family friend) whom he arrested for embezzling N.2m was released within a few months and placed in a very strategic position from where he became stupendously rich.

I will continue to say that the people who voted for him were ignorant of the early eighties, or were not from well to do homes, so didn't know the difference between his administration and the previous one/ones. The guy is a spoiler.
