Nice thread here! Please keep up the good work.

However, what advice can you give a fresh Urban and Regional Planning graduate awaiting service on the best HSE career part to follow.
Though, while in school, I was opportuned to undergo few courses in Disaster Risk management, Environmental Impact assessment and Geographical Information Science, which all fall under the sphere of Environmental management. My undergraduate thesis also centered on Environmental Health.

Also, I stumbled on Novelle site. I got to know that they offers HSE 1, 2, 3 certification courses approved by UK SHE. Based on one of the expert here insistence on joining ISPON/NISP first before going further in HSE career, I wanna ask, is the certificate issued by UK SHE on HSE 1, 2, 3 equivalent to one issued by ISPON and is it recongnise by ISPON (will it be considered when one want to join ISPON in any of their membership cadre).

Personally, I prefer HSE courses toward obtaining UK SHE flouted by Novelle because the course structure is more organised, well structured, globally recognised and a little bit cheap too (it is around $150).

Your advise and reaction pls!

Best regards!

ISPON accepts only it's own GHSE and HSE level 3 alone for registration as a member. The only exception is if you already have a NEBOSH certificate, you may be considered.

Please note that there is an almost similar curriculum for HSE Levels 1,2&3. While that of Novelle is appealing, I will advise that you do that of ISPON and pursue your membership. When you get that you can choose to do Novelle's as a refresher any time. Luckily it isn't too expensive (hopefully).

I recommend you do ISPON like mixcwell has said, then maybe Novelle as Refresher, then NEBOSH. Or you do Just ISPON and then go straight to NEBOSH. Recall that the NEBOSH program is wider in scope and a little bit more advanced.

After this, the next thing to ask yourself is if you want to major or specialize or develop strength in any particular area within the HSE Science/Engineering/Management Discipline. Then you develop your self, your profile and qualifications to this area. At this sort of advanced level you can do a lot including consult, teach, invent and patent, work for a company etc. All in all you have the foundation and then the advanced or specialized skills and knowledge.
Good luck.

Dear madam,

Relatively cheapness/cost is not a generic idea. My idea of what is cheap might differ from yours and vice versa.

The MBA degree simply applies to any discipline. It is geared towards entrepreneurs and managers. It is a generic masters with immense benefits especially when you are running/will run a business or managing/will manage people and resources in an organization.

Another course that is also good is the Project Management Professional Course. This is also good and quite related to HSE and Business Administration. You may want to give it a try.

When you say courses, we believe you are referring to HSE Professional Courses right? If you look through this thread you will discover that a lot of us recommend a particular path in becoming a HSE Professional. Start with NISP/ISPON, levels 2&3.

You may need to be more specific in what you seek and why you seek it and what benefits you are trying to derive from it. Hopefully that will help us in pointing you to the right direction. Kindly oblige us.

For those who applied as Environmentalists/HSE Professionals and are preparing for the upcoming DPR Interview, you could add this little bit of information:

The HSE Division is one of the Main Divisions of DPR.

It consists of:

1.Environmental Control
2.Technical Safety Control
3.Laboratory Control

Note that there isn't an Occupational Health/Industrial Hygiene Control. Occupational Health is handled by NNPC Medicals as a service and not as a regulatory function. However, matters like enforcing regular medical checks for staff, ensuring good medical awareness programs, ensuring good medical retainerships by all companies in the oil and gas industry is still by the HSE Division.

The Units under HSE are as follows:

1.Environment Unit

-Environmental Studies Section e.g EIA, EERs, Pre and Post Drill seabed surveys etc.

-Pollution Control Section e.g Oil Spill Contingency Planning, Compliance Monitoring, Spill Drilling and Spill Response Capability Auditing etc

-Waste Management Section e.g. Hazardous Waste Management, Waste treatment plant designs, treatment of oil industry hazardous wastes etc.

2.Safety Unit
-Safety Studies Section e.g. Process hazard analysis studies i.e Hazop, FMEA, HAZAN, HAZIDS, etc

-Accident /Incident Investigation Section e.g investigate accidents /incidents

- Inspections and Asset Integrity Section e.g. Risk Based Inspection, prescriptive/routine/corrective maintenance, reliability/availability/maintainability/etc.

3.Laboratory Unit
-Pretoleum Product Quality Testing
-Bioassay Testing
-Labs Accreditation
-Crude Oil Assays etc.
-Lab Analysis witnessing

Try to improve/brush up yourself in these areas and areas related to your core discipline and how you can apply your knowledge and skills from your core discipline to all these. Usually, they either decide to fix you in Safety, Environment or Lab, based on your core discipline, skill sets or your request. Engineers are usually put in Safety. Biochemists, chemists, environmental scientists etc are put in Environment. Chemists, Industrial chemists etc are also put in Lab.

Two main Regulations are used by the DPR under HSE

1. Environmental Guidelines and Standards for the Petroleum Industry in Nigeria (EGASPIN, 2002)

2. Mineral Oil Safety Regulations (Mosr, 1997)

Unfortunately EGASPIN is sold and not easily accessible. EGASPIN also contains a lot of Laboratory guidelines and standards.

The link below is for the Mosr, 1997.

https://www.google.com.ng/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=http://www.lexadin.nl/wlg/legis/nofr/oeur/arch/nig/mineraloilsreg.pdf&ved=0ahUKEwjJm8LXienXAhVkKMAKHXEvBKkQFggjMAA&usg=AOvVaw0qDTcnxtcORnpGUCBL0Hwp

Please sir, which of these units would a microbiologist be most suited in

Thank you sir for the detailed response.

However, I will prefer the Environmental specialty considering by educational background.

I went through the previous pages of this thread, and I
understand that NEBOSH focuses mainly on the 'health' specialty I. e Occupational health, that only IEMA another certification is good for those who prefer the environmental side of HSE.

What is your take? IEMA popularity, visibility, recognition etc. Hope it is well know by HSE recruiting firms or agency.

Because I will prefer the IEMA route after the ISPON HSE 3, or is there any NEBOSH certification that focuses on the environmental specialty?

What is the requirements for joining ISPON either as an associate or full member after their HSE 3 certification? Any writing or oral exam(s), professional pupilage, report submissions etc., not forgetting the cost too.

From the ISPON website, I noticed they focus more on 'health' and 'safety' ignoring 'environment' because they repeatedly refer to themselves as health and safety professionals. Is it that they do not have locus standi in the environmental specialty. Though, they listed Environmental management auditing and Environmental Impact Assessment as one of their core area of competence.

Have, you heard about Nigeria Environmental Society? What is their relationship with HSE?

Many thanks!

Please it is not correct that NEBOSH focuses on occupational health. No Sir. It focuses on more on Safety/Industrial Hygiene and little on Occupational Health.

NEBOSH also has a Diploma course on Environmental Management. But I doubt if any Nigerian accredited trainer offers this yet.

Secondly IEMA isn't as recognized as NEBOSH. Yes they focus on Environment but they aren't really known by recruiting firms or agencies. As a matter of fact, few environmentalists know them. Secondly, like NEBOSH, IEMA is quite expensive. Usually after most people do NEBOSH they don't even bother about IEMA. In Nigeria of today (may be it might change tomorrow), NEBOSH is much more recognized that IEMA and will give a lot of edge.

So what you can do is get the ISPON, do IEMA, then do other specialized courses on various aspects of Environmental Management /Sciences/Engineering. I will however advise that if you can do NEBOSH, then please do it.

Like I always hint you can:

-Get a job (work as an environmentalist/HSE professional) in an organization
-Teach
-Consult/Offer professional services and
-Or Design/Patent based on R & D

These are the four core areas of any professional. Some people combine more than one or even engage in all four.

The R& D part isn't well developed in Nigeria as we are not serious with science and technology. We don't even fund our universities properly. As per the getting a job part, in organisations, the Unit is usually HSE, then under it sub units like Environment, Safety etc then come in. It is always good to be conversant with all three aspects. If you look at your career path, you'll end up being the Manager or Director of HSE. At that level you can't say '' Oh.. I am just an Environmentalist... ''. The Deputy Director of HSE in DPR for instance cannot claim she doesn't know Safety or Occupational health. As a junior staff she was an environmental officer, but as she grew she can't have limited knowledge. No one will even hear that as an excuse. As much as you can, know that HSE is a discipline and you need to know each component as they are interrelated.

Based on the options above as a professional, you will tailor your growth and development towards any or a combination of the four aspects I listed above.

Good luck

Environment. I would suggest Environment. As a microbiologist you can focus on Environmental Microbiology and how you can use the knowledge for impact assessment/studies, waste management and pollution control. However, if you have done basic HSE, you might want to add this as an additional strength. That you can also fit into Safety if need be. This can be a selling strength to market yourself during your interview.

The DPR laboratories for now do not run samples on environmental matrices. These are done in third party accredited labs. The DPR only runs analysis on Crude and Refined Petroleum Products in their Labs. There is no DPR lab Nation wide that analyzes Soil, Water, Air samples for environmental Characteristics & Parameters yet.

Hello Phobic, sorry for replying late. No, you are not given a supervisor. You'll just be given a list of topics from which you will choose anyone you like and write on something similar to the topic.

The screening questions are simple HSE questions. They will also ask you about where you are working and the role, etc

I didn't really jack like that, and the main question they asked me I got it wrong as it was ambiguous and they were all laughing at me, but I was still admitted. They asked me how one can test the efficacy of the agent in the extinguisher. I was still brainstorming and they then replied that one just has to look at the gauge. The answer looks silly to me anyways; in my own opinion it does not answer the question.

Bro, I hope Novelle Center is a good training center for NEBOSH IGC cos I plan to train with them come next year. Share your perspective; and if you know of a better training center pls share. Also, I would like you to suggest a good center where one can train as a "first aider". Tried RED CROSS in Oyo state (Onireke, Ibadan to be precise) last month. they told me about how to register as a member but not about the training. They said there is nothing like that in their office.

Kindly permit me Sir, I do not intend to recommend any training school for NEBOSH. I would rather other persons who have successfully passed through their system, give a review. Or you could visit their teaching centers and see things for yourself.

Regarding first aid training,I haven't seen a full training in Nigeria. A lot of first aid courses I see cover CPR and a few other things. My First Aider Course was done overseas and covered a whole lot of aspects, I thought I was being trained as a medic/nurse instead of a first aider. I latter got to learn that in that country, IT WAS COMPULSORY FOR STUDENTS OF PARTICULAR Disciplines including those studying HSE Sciences, TO LEARN FIRST Aid.First Aid is a compulsory course that you must pass both the Written and Practical aspect of it. IT WASN'T AN OPTION BUT A DUTY TO COUNTRY/PUBLIC. YOU HAD NO CHOICE. It was also a punishable crime for a qualified first aider to pass by an accident /injured victim without rendering assistance. We do not attach such importance to matters like this, hence our not so good curriculum in Nigeria. In Nigeria we take selfies and photos, both the literate and illiterate.

I really can't vouch for any trainer here. Kindly do an internet search and then make a choice. With regards to first aid materials, In Google search just type ''First Aid Course Textbook Pdf'' and search. You will see a lot of resources you can choose to download and read on your own.

Best of Luck.
