Good morning everyone. I have a question, or should I say I created a question since it's so quiet in here. grin
Ok, here goes. How do you come up with the names of your characters? Do you consider any factors before naming them? And is it a tough job?

Love, good morning.

I've always been someone who wants to be epic, to be different and that reflects in my art. I don't like using common names in my stories. I prefer to use names that would leave readers wondering of the character's tribe until I tell them. I never use a well-known native name unless it's been established in the story that it's primarily about that particular tribe. Also, I don't like foreign names. In fact, I would never use them willingly.

These are some examples:
Alero (as the central character);
Adai;
Hakeem (as a villain);
Adu;
Orhiza;
Esse;
Jafaaru;
Jummai;
Oye;
Lisa;
Hayatou e.t.c

The thing is, I like my characters to be unique. In a world where almost every writer prefers fancy names, I don't. I would rather symbolic names that convey a message to readers.

And, ah, yes, it is difficult to find a suitable one for a character at times.

How was your night, baby?

Great! I love English and Hebrew names. I'm obsessed with names that begin with J. It affected me in my last story.
Night was great and yours?
Re: 2017-2018 Chatbox by meneski(m): 10:15am On Dec 19, 2017
Well mine is so simple. I make use of fantasynamegenerators.com it provides a range of different names and in the end i just go with what rings Medieval to me.

My current WIP has names like, Hurdrilk,Harlmond,Olem,Dhurk,leerba,Keagon,Deney,Willip,Waldo etc

I know it might sound alien but brothers and sisters i don find my own genre oh.

Hmmm I almost gave all the characters names that begin with J oooo till some people drew my ears and twisted them 720 degrees.

For me darling, I am a sucker for native names. Especially the unique ones you can hardly pronounce.

I like English names too, a lot actually.

As a Nigerian who wants to promote my beloved country and our culture, I usually give my characters Native and English names.

Yes, it is hard to give names to the characters at times... so many things are involved. The nationality of the character, tribe, culture, attitude, way of life, religion, so much more is involved.

I have a note pad where I write out names.... so when I write, I choose from my backlog.

well, I don't know it depends on what the story line is all about... For me I prefer a very few characters... Even when I'm tempted to introduce more, I still try to cub the temptation.... But avoid ambiguous names too

Hey guys, on a lighter note, let's talk about how our writing process goes. Do you take anything for ginger/inspiration? wink You know, sometimes when you have writers block and you just have to write, do you take anything or do anything to get your creative juices flowing.

I believe at least 80% of us here are adults, so let's not be shy. smiley. I know some writers listen to music, some take alcohol, some smoke something (you know that thing), some have sex or think about sex, some draw energy from memories of a breakup or a sad event in their lives, some get driven by the thought of money and fame at the end of the line, some watch movies in the genre they write in, etc.. What is your own source of inspiration for writing?

So, let me go first. I have noticed that for me, when I write while sipping a bottle of Legend Stout, I write FASTER and I am more creative. Ideas just keep flowing in and I never get blocked. Hey, this is me o! We are all different and live different lives. So, it might not be the same for you. And please don't judge me if you don't drink alcohol.

The second thing I do is watch lots of American Romance comedies. I get lots of ideas for stories from watching those movies, and I also get this strong urge to write.

So, guys, let's hear from you...what is your writing process like? Do you take or do anything to enhance your writing.
When I have writers block. I have only one cheat I use(well, I'm a Christian and I'm sorry if I sound too spiritual but this is what I do) I pick up my pen immediately after my quiet time (midnight) Then I'll call on the HolySpirit to take over. Before I know it, I'll just keep on writing till day break.

Aside writers block. I get inspired by reading other people's stories especially NL stories to be sincere. I also see a lot of foreign series and it helps and Nigerian series too(Tinsel)
I'm very sensitive to my environment too, someone can just say something, not necessarily talking to me and I'll pick something from it. And I listen alot....

Like some writers said, I write to please and satisfy myself too. Most times lost in my own world but I've changed that now though not completely.

hi guys, I'm Micheal and I'd love to be a writer like you guys but my problem is that I don't have any idea about literature, I've searched the internet to gain some ideas but Its not really helping. A friend introduced me to nairaland so I'm here to gain some ideas about writing

Please if you are interested in helping me out kindly reply me, God bless
My own advice: Just continue reading. Read and read and read until you feel that push that you can do it too. Before you know it, you'll start writing.
Then like someone said earlier. You need to ask yourself why you want to be a writer. Because that your vital reason will later be your drive and inspiration.

I do this too. I love eavesdropping on people's conversations. There's always a story there somewhere. Lol!

I love natives name especially for my lead characters (proudly Nigerian) My focus when it comes to names is the lead characters. If it's not native then it has to be biblical names.
Also I go for names I personally love. Names I can give my own children.
As for factors, I take the tribe/Religion of the characters into consideration. If the character is hausa, then you'll get an hausa name.

The tough part but not too tough, thanks to google is if the characters is not from my tribe.
I recently googled Igbo names with their meaning both male and female for a particular work.

I think I rather prefer English names than natives...so that people who reads will understand and be able to remember the characters

Read a particular type of novel in school with strange names,during exams I couldn't remember the names of the characters.
So in my own opinion, I think English names are way better
