I am coming up with a proposal to all our states in South West region of Nigeria-Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Ondo, Ekiti and Osun state that all lands should only be leased for period of 5years to Non indigenes instead of outright acquisition. In this proposal, Yorubas ll be asked to ask for few documents before a land ll be leased to non-indigenes. A letter from a head of a family and local govt identification should be part of documents to ask for before the transaction even allow to take place.

If your concern is about land ownership you should not be alarmed for the Yoruba interior. The only State where land lease/ownership might be issue is Lagos.

In the case of Lagos this question of land ownership was first tackled in 1865 with Captain Beecroft when Dosunmu ceded the land. The Idejo Chiefs refused to acknowledge the cede and told Beecroft Dosunmu had no authority to cede land in Lagos. He can cede his throne if he wants, but not their land. Beecroft agreed and gazetted the agreement that Lagos will be directly under the Crown and not the Foreign Office (which is the overseer of British protecorates). This was a landmark victory. The Crown therefore had to lease but could not own the land.
Between 1865 and today there has been revisit to the issue of ownership of Lagos. The rule has not changed. The latest court battle was in the 70s when Federal Government of Nigeria was trying to change Lagos from Federal Capital to Federal ownership. Oyekan went to court and battled the govt to a victory. Thats why till today every FG property on the soil of Lagos is a leasehold, not ownership. You will see where Lagos State has recently started to recover its land from FG.

SO if Britain cannot take the land with its military power and FG cannot convert the land with its might, who is Ibo to want to convert or own land in Lagos? Land Decree Act puts authority for land management in the hand of State Govt. There is also Customary Law of Land. So anyone who buys a land in Lagos does so on a leasehold not as an inheritance ownership. Ibos ought to take lesson and example from the ongoing recovery by Lagos State acquiring its lands from FG.

Regardless of if it's implemented by law. There needs to be an increase in our own responsibility. If you have family members in development, whether it be uncles, aunts, fathers, cousins, etc, you need to sit them down (today) and tell them to think about what they're doing, who they're selling to, and how that will effect yorubaland for future generations. Your yoruba forefathers didn't make you responsible for Nigerians, white people did. Not to say no one else can benefit from what we do, but our primary responsibility is for future yoruba generations. This is what every people do in the world. The English, the Scottish, the Jews, everyone. Those who don't do this wind up with children without a homeland.

Good initiative. We can do anything we put our minds to but Yoruba just can't protect their own, it's a curse. The land use act has nothing to do with it, no one can force anyone to sell land in Nigeria just as some places in old east still don't sell land to ibos.
