Owerri has to start attracting more deep-pocketed investments for Owerri to reach the level of Las Vegas. Rochas really has to market Owerri as an investment destination/hub for entertainment. Rochas should also provide some incentives for such investments.

Example:
Rochas should attract high end casinos and resorts from South Africa(or Nigerian/other countries) with 2-yr tax reliefs.

Owerri certainly has potential but needs marketing. Owerri in years to come should strive to carve a niche in Nigeria and this niche could possibly be entertainment/leisure/tourism.

Owerri is filled with slums with zero decent accommodation. I m a fan of Okorocha but the truth must be told, Awka and Onitsha are more developed than Owerri. Owerri should start developing decent housing for its people. Owerri should start building industrial estates, if not 2/3rd of Imo state people shall continue to flee to Onitsha in droves which is their obodo oyibo and greener pastures and equally the first place they saw bridges and flyovers as shown below.

[s]Allhavesinned: Irrespectives that I am not a Fan of Rocahs or Abagworo, Owerri is more developed than Awka, Onitsha is No NO and if you are talking about Estates, come to Old Owerri and let me name some.

Aladinma Housing Estate = Uniform Bungalows with Tarred roads and Street light, A Mall, Police Station, Post Office, Primary School and Others

Aladinma Extension = same as above

Ikenegbu Layout = A Uniformed 3 floor buildings with tarred roads and with primary and secondary school

Ikenegbu Extensio. = Uniformed 3 floor and 4 floor buildings

Prefab Estate = Uniformed Bungalows and Duplex

Old FH Estate and New FH Estate along chukwuma nwaoha and egbu road shoprite

Trans Egbu Layout

Uratta west and East Layout along MCC road

GraceLand Estate = one of the best

Arugo Estate

Udenwa Estate = The best and where you see the richest

Sites and Service

Umuguma Housing = Where Young guys did wonders with mansions

Works Layout = One of the best before

Amakaohia Estate = back of Rapour Hotels

Area U, H and otger areas

Udenwa Estate Avu and lots more

I agree with you and we will do it. Your ambition should be our aim and not remain 3rd world but it will be gradual. Okorocha has started it and we the private sector will take over the development in a few years time.

I don't think there is much in Owerri that would make it a tourist place, not when Obudu is available not too far away. As far as Vegas and casinos why should it turn into that? Are Owerri people gamblers? We don't have to be a 'Nigerian version of' all the time. We can actually use our own inspiration and imagination for once to create something new and authentic.

Besides, there is a whole other side to Vegas you don't see which you definitely don't want to emulate.

Owerri people should start developing decent high rise flats for the masses instead of littering their entire landscape with those slums.

Three or four floors in a building is not high rise though.

You maybe right but you must start from somewhere. It is still far better than littering slums bungalows everywhere.

Yes there is a need to build up but even in your picture there are a range of buildings. Some high-rise some mid and some ordinary house level. I think Lagos is getting the memo because they have quite a few high rise residential buildings and are planning more.

True, but many bungalows have clearly been there for years before the current population growth.

I highly doubt new builds are bungalows.

Owerri is already the most sort after weekend destination in Nigeria outside Lagos and Abuja. The tourism in Owerri is not that of sightseeing but relaxation, conferences and social gathering.

Relaxation they can build on, but they are going to have to put targeted funds, planning and effort to build a relaxing environment. They need to attract that reputation because it the moment Calabar and Obudu holds that along with being very clean and friendly.

I think you are talking about a destination after Abuja and Lagos among Igbos? I really don't think all tribes are heading to Owerri after Abuja and Lagos.

Maybe Igbos are clear majority of Nigerian population. Calabar only happens during the carnival but Owerri happens all year. Example it is strange in Port Harcourt to talk about going for weekend in Calabar but like a weekly ritual to Owerri. Even when you check some statistics like weekend flights with regards to aviation records, Owerri is the 3rd behind Lagos and Abuja while full year statistics Owerri is 4th behind Abuja, Lagos and Port Harcourt. You also check the number of hotels and vibrancy of hospitality industry you find Owerri at 3rd place behind Lagos and Abuja.

But it's among Igbos though? Even people from PH going to Owerri are likely going to see family I reckon. Igbos are not a clear majority in Nigeria but we have a culture of going 'home' as often we can. Maybe it is people who are from Owerri that are travelling back from Lagos and Abuja? Is it connected to their businesses? That might explain the weekly occurrence.

Even if Calabar only happens once a year it's a tourist magnet not only among Nigerians but some other Africans too. Notting Hill Carnival is also once a year, as well as Rio. But at that time all roads lead there.

I still don't think Owerri is a tourist place even if they have many 'hotels' especially as it became a fad to build a hotel or guest house in the East a short while ago. We'll just have to agree to disagree my brother.

You nailed it..hehehehehe

The clown always mistake congregation of commercial se.x hawkers of Imo state descent in Owerre as tourists. There's no single Igbo person from other Igbo state that is a resident of Imo state. There is absolutely nothing that takes anyone to Imo state except you are passing through the state and decides to hop on the cheap commercial se.x hawkers and immediately continue your journey.

People should stop deceiving themselves that proliferation of brothels and swarming of prostitutes is an ECONOMIC INDICES. The same Imo state records the lowest IGR in the southern Nigeria. I dey laugh cheesy

I would not say hospitality and tourism necessarily go hand in hand Abuja has soooo many hotels and guest houses but it's not a tourist place but more a transient place which is why people require short term hotel accommodation there.

Maybe Owerri is the same?

Hospitality and Tourism may go hand in hand in places like NY or Miami or even Kenya, Mauritius or Cape Town. The tourist sites can be named too.

Can the same be said about Owerri?

A lot of Imolites have expressed their disappointment at the media blackmail going on in the State giving false impression to outsiders about true state of affairs. I will just copy and paste statements made on facebook by respinsibke people who are not politicians and don't need favour from anyone to say the truth.

I think Rochas has done great for Ndi Imo. But he has not appointed credible media representatives. And most of the people who defend him are either in his pay roll or are expecting to get something from him. And sometimes I wonder why he is not interested in controlling the online narratives that paint his administration of Imo state in bad light. But I am sure he believes in "Seeing is Believing" and that is why he doesn't pay much attention in what media people are writing against him. It is for that reason that nearly all my friends, who attacked Rochas, but returned to Imo state last December are withdrawing their attacks. It is also good like that.

Re: Few Pics From Imo State by Abagworo(m): 12:40pm On Jan 02, 2018
Gov. Rochas Okorocha (Owelle)
The untold story about the Moulded Africa heads of States, His Governance and rapid development of Owerri metropolis.

My name is Destiny Ifeanyi, from Akatta in Oru East LGA Imo state, I Reside in Guangzhou China and Lagos Nigeria,
I was in Owerri on 30th of December 2017 and I saw for my self how beautiful this man Rochas has transformed the city within this short period of time that he has been at the helm of Imo state Affairs, all over the world people are flying fake news without even visiting Imo state at least for once and they are buying these Evil News that May Be cooked by the opposition just to run down Rochas government,
Am not saying that Rochas is a saint but he has done better than any governor Imo state has ever produced, the record and the evidence is scattered all over Imo state.

Interestingly I visited the famous hero Square and the Imo state Hall of Fame, luckily I was able to enter into the vicinity which was barricaded with some Security officials securing the place, I find out so many untold truths that must be told, it will be a sin to me and my conscience will always judge me after seeing these magnificent structures and sculptures on ground without telling my findings, I found out that Rochas is simply making Imo state the center of tourism and a city with so many side attractions in Nigeria, though the place is still under construction and when completed you must pay a get fee before going into the vicinity, so many Nigeria and African greatest men are moulded there, works are still in progress there, beside you will also see the Imo hall of fame where you will also find many sculptures of Africa great men, with their history also displayed, with so many other things.
By the time this complex is fully completed whoever that visited Owerri must want to go inside to see things for him or herself
This will also be a money making machine for Imo state if plan and utilize well...

The problem we Africans have is that we don’t preserve culture and history, I don’t know how many world heritage sites we have in Nigeria, I have been in so many part of the world, precisely in the city of Guangzhou China where I live you will find a site that have existed for 3-5000 yrs, and tourist still pay to visit those sites till date.

What Rochas has done is worthy of emulation
I think people should always verify every stories before spreading it, this is real political witchcraft and people like me that are not into politics must be careful so that these political power mongers will not use us to achieve their evil aim.

The way people are mocking this man is not the way it is, all this is a typical lies just to rubbish the effort of this man, I went into Owerri from Douglas Rd, wethdral Rd to Okigwe Rd and many other part of Owerri the setting and the beautification is so magnificent, Owerri is gradually becoming a world glass city, and with the passion and creativity I saw in this man he must achieve his dreams,

I Am not a politician, I don’t even have anyone in Rochas Government either a brother or a friend, never, I just make my findings and think that the real truth must be told, posterity must judge me if I shut up my mouth without saying this, he may remove so many markets inside Owerri city and move them to Owerri outskirts, when you visit there you will see his reasons, he may ban Keke napep riders inside Owerri when you visit Owerri you will know his reasons, though he has to do more to double the number of mini taxis inside Owerri at least to ease the sufferings of people.

Finally Rochas may have so many short comings in his governance in some areas but we must also have to understand that no government is perfect, the most important is that his good deeds supersede the bad ones and his percentage rating by people on ground is very overwhelming, I sincerely commend him... Kudos to him...
Pls lets encourage our leaders to do more, pulling them down with unnecessary media and online criticisms will never move us forward or to any where.

Destiny Ifeanyi
Wandering around Imo Hero’s Square / Imo state Hall of Fame
Dreaming the day I will be also be moulded
Just as these African Great men.
Kamputakwanu...

Let me simply tell you what happens in Owerri. People living across Nigeria and particularly Southeast/Southsouth work hard from monday to Friday and then travel to Owerri to relax till Sunday. It is a routine in Port Harcourt.

Basically Igbos visit home on the weekends? That's what I suggested earlier. A tourist destination it does not make imho.Im sure people visit Ogun state from Lagos in the same fashion. I don't think that makes Ogun state a tourist destination though.

Maybe our definition of tourist destination differs greatly. As stated earlier we agree to disagree then.

Owerri is not home of Igbos. We come from different towns and villages and we don't visit home every weekend. A Bayelsa man that goes to Owerri to relax for the weekend isn't in his home and so is it for an Onitsha man or Ngwa man that goes to Owerri for weekend. With your theory the densely populated Igbo areas would have been the preferred weekend destinations.
