University of British Columbia? Nahhh, I won't waste my time again . I applied to them in 2016 and after 6 months of waiting for the admission outcome, I got a rejection letter that looked like condolence letter. You know all those letters that start with "we regret to notify you...... grin grin grin grin

8 of my colleagues and friends applied too ( some of them were first class graduates) and were bounced after waiting for eternity.

Ubc is a top school in the world so I understand why getting admission to that school is tantamount to buhari passing the ielts listening test. angry

This has just removed my fears. Thank you @maternal & @thecongo2

maternal:

A lot of the fears newcomers have has no merits. That 6-9 month child will be treated as gold. The gov't will value that child more than anything. Your pikin is a future tax payer, his/her success is vital to Canada's future. Whatever you need, you'll get. That child will not lack anything. Don't have money for daycare ? The gov't will cover it. Healthcare covered, etc. Whatever you need. Canada invests in people, because they know they'll get that investment back 10 folds when the child is a future tax payer. Millions are spent on bridging programs for this exact reason. Come to Canada with the whole family, you will be fine. I'm not saying it won't be easy, but you won't be poor/Hungary living under the bridge. Congo and others have said the same thing. Newcomers shouldn't have any worry. A child lacking anything would be a disgrace to the federal government. People don't accept such here.

Hello Beautiful Nairaland Family!
We finally moved into our new apartment yesterday. My Angel and his wife ensured we enjoyed our first night here. First, he came with his car on the 31st and picked our 10 suitcases to the apartment. Then, on the 1st, he came for us and conveyed us to the house .

As shops were closed, we couldn't buy some basic things like Duvet. While my husband and I were unpacking, I quickly made 'Nsala' soup, that's white soup with dry fish and also made some eba. Kai!, I didn't know my children have missed swallow like this o. We all dived into the food and by force, all the running nose and cold vanished.

The caretaker stopped by. He left so many things for free for us; plates, drinking glasses, wine glasses, champagne glasses, tea cups, forks, a cooking pot, a frying pot, and some food . I was like, no , that's too much. He said, you guys need them to settle in comfortably , later you can begin to buy yours. But for now, it's a gift from me to you guys .

Then, we bought the fridge, cooker, washing machine and dryer as well as TV from him at a great price. He used to stay in the apartment.

Few hours later, my Angel came with a big sack of duvet, bedspreads, blankets, pillow cases from his wife to us. The wife made a pot of white rice, chicken stew and a plate of fried plantain. Then added a chilled bottle of wine and a packet of juice for the children. I was like woooow! They said, we know you guys can easily buy these stuffs but today, shops are closed till 2nd or even 3rd. We can't be here and watch you suffer in this cold without basic things of life! Before I forget, he also gave us a small heater to use in the bedroom because according to them, it will take a while for the apartment to heat up as we would like considering we are coming from a tropical region. So, a small heater in the room would be handy.

Walahi, if that guy didn't bring that heater along, I am 101 % sure, we would have run back to the hotel because aside the bedroom we slept in, other rooms are freezing cold.

He then asked us to prepare our list so he would take us to where we would buy them since his wife is busy with the kids. He would be available to do that today and tomorrow before my classes start on the 4th.

When he left, I started crying. My husband said something to me. It is always good to also give because we never know when we will be given back in return. 2 weeks before we left, I started giving out all the things my children used, from cars seats , clothes, walkers, swings, toys, cribs to total strangers I met on social media because I advertised for people who needed any of those items to contact me. My husband was even asking me then why give out all, why couldn't I sell some of them. I said No. My spirit has asked me to give them out to people who would need them. I wasn't selling. At that point, we needed money to tidy up one or two things . I had no doubt in my mind that those items should be given out free.

So, that's my update! God bless us in all our endeavors!

Not seems, definitely is!! Quebec is much cheaper, especially compared to the West Coast. When I visited Montreal, I was shocked by how cheap food was. Sherbrooke will probably be cheaper.

How's the winter over there?

Nogen:

My sister! Scary is an understatement. Life in Quebec seems cheaper . Sherbrooke is so calm like you live in Enugu/Jos kind of life but you have to speak French. You really can't do much here without French. I came back to see my husband and a hotel staff who came to tidy up our room struggling to communicate. As soon as the lady sighted me, she heaved a sign of relief! She was a like, "We have been struggling to communicate. Your husband doesn't speak French and me, I don't speak English. Two of us suddenly turned to deaf and dumb using only hands and legs". I laughed so hard.

Hey Guys. Please does any one have a contact for anyone who works at FRSC and facilitates the letter of authentication of driving experience. I sent the request to all the mails found on the thread (i.e. info, help desk and ndlverification) on the 27th of november. I know my mail was received cos i got a response on the 29th requesting for a clearer copy of my drivers license which i promptly sent. However its been over a month and i haven't gotten any response, i sent a reminder on the 20th of December but nothing. I am landing on the 26th Of January so worried about not receiving it before i leave. Please let me know if you can help in any way. Thanks

This is amazing. I'm not on here much, but that is wonderful to read! Canada is a great place to live. Welcome!

Nogen:
Meeen! The cold got a better part of me yesterday. I came back exhausted!

My house hunt yesterday took an interesting turn. I saw an advert on kijiji about a fully furnished apartment for 750$ a month. In my mind, it's a great deal. I took a taxi to the apartment and I wasn't satisfied. Na wao for these Canadians , they said fully furnished but I met nearly empty apartment. 2 dirty sofas in the living room, cooker, fridge , Internet. That's all. Is this what I will pay 750$ monthly? No space for my kids to play except I take them to a nearby park.

I left the place to a second apartment , managed by the same agent. A 3 and half , better than the first one at 550 dollars a month. Has 2 dirty sofas again. I looked at the environment and said maybe we could manage this.

I then went to look for Service Canada office to obtain my Social Security number. The house agent took me to the mall instead. God works in mysterious ways. I used the opportunity to buy a few things we needed . Was about to call a taxi when my phone went flat. I saw a black guy sitting somewhere in the mall. I approached him and begged him to please call me a taxi that my phone was flat. He asked where I was going to. I told him. He brought out his phone and the next thing he said, " Come , let me drop you off to the place" I was scared. He sensed that and quickly introduced himself as a Malian and asked me where I came from. I said I'm Nigerian. He was perplexed! A Nigerian in Sherbrooke ? You guys go to Toronto and the Anglophone provinces not French!

Then I became relaxed and he took me there. We got talking and he got to know about my house search. He waited for me to get my Number and he then took me to his Caretaker after introducing me to his wife and 2 children. I became totally comfortable. He brought me back to the hotel , met my husband and children. An hour later, he came back and picked me up to see the apartment the Caretaker spoke about earlier.

I fell in love immediately! It has all that I asked for. Large space at the back and at the front, a garage, a storage facility outside, 2 large bedrooms, a modern cooker, big fridge, heater, hot water and a serene environment and I even have a small garden. 5 minutes walk to the Mall, 2 mins walk to an elementary school and a Daycare center. It also came cheaper at 525 dollar a month. The only thing is that we can't move in until the 3rd of January and I have to pay 35 dollars a month for electricity.

He agreed to be my guarantor and the wife is taking me to stores where I can buy stuffs for the apartment at a reasonable rate. He is coming this morning to take me to the Landlord and sign the contract. He is an Angel sent by God to help me at this very critical point in my life. God really works in mysterious ways.

Structural engineering. I don't intend to change to any other branch of civil enginnering.

well most of my expertise is in structural engineering but i am open minded, i would decide on an option to specialise as i learn more about the industry in canada.

btw I dont have PR yet, but all things being equal, before fall session starts i would. you may want to apply for PNP as a backup, i hear SINP is on, Civil Engineer should be on its occupation in demand list.

Happy new year everyone.
@andyphief, you should try to search for thesis based msc progs in your field of interest and contact prospective supervisors. If you are able to secure a supervisor with a grant who is willing to put that towards your research then you won't have to pay for your studies. Explore Australia and Canada and maybe Germany. I wouldn't advise anyone to go study in the US right now unless you have a scholarship or funds because with the immigration reform with Trump, post study after schooling in the US is becoming a myth. Also look into applying for Australian PR.
I never knew there were two ways to get a master degree...had to research more..but I have a question, doesn't a thesis based master's degree limit one to research work when achieved?
I thought it was going to be one question but I guess u have another...What is an Australian PR?..
Thank you.

SINP Nahhhhh. I'll rather wait for Ontario PNP or wait for CRS cutoff to come down. My resumption is Fall 2018 and that is 8 months from today, it's still a long time to get ITA and PR. I'll prefer to defer the admission to Jan 2019 if PR doesn't come before then.

From the little research I've done, structural engineers are in high demand in North America.

I know computer science have different branches, but if you're into programming, both web and software. $43/hr is a joke. You can earn more than double of that as a proficient programmer with intimidating portfolios consisting of past projects. Not to talk of the flexibility too, working from home in crazy winter conditions(with employer's permission ofcourse).
Also, rather than pursuing a master degree, try venturing into learning other programming languages. Hands-on skills matter than degrees in IT

Thanks for your feedback.
I was initially misled by einsteno calculation mistake when he came up with 165K per year as base salary ($43/hr) instead of 85K.
That is why I was so surprised. But 85K per year makes much sense. I dont make 100K though grin
I can still follow your advice

In any case, I had always dream of a master degree. That dream died as I got involved with more responsibilities. But I have resolved to resurrect it this year.

Merci beaucoup

Does anyone know if it's possible to apply for PR while still studying for a Master degree in Canada even when one has over 4 years Nigerian working experience in Civil Engineering?

Yes, you can apply for PR through EE on the basis of your previous work experience so far you can provide all the requirements. You don't have to currently be working to apply, just get all the requirements for Skilled Worker program and dive into the pool.

Obviously, demand for renewable energy will continue to grow in the next few years.

However, I will like to caution everyone that certificates are good...the education is great but your success mostly depends on what you do with the education and certificates. Our Nigerian background often skews us towards school, school, school with the perspective of getting employed. I have hardly seen Nigerian immigrants talk about entrepreneurship....and I think that's an area with a lot of potential that Nigerian immigrants are missing out on.

A quick tip is to multiply the hourly wage by 2...that will give you an idea of the gross annual compensation for full time employment. Example, $15/he translates to roughly $30k a year. Similarly, $43/he translates to $86k a year.

Glad to have you here @vcole! Wow! You have found schools already! I love your drive o!

I honestly do not like the sound of the 3-hours for 3-days in a week preschool. My toddler is already used to 7:30am-4pm schedule. Plus, I won't be able to achieve much in the short time: can't go to work & I have not researched schools yet to know what it will be like.

I am an IT professional. I am either going to continue my business online or get some degree/diploma. I have an IT Masters degree from the UK and I wonder if that would fetch me employment in Canada.

I'm also an IT Professional, Networking to be precise. I really don't have issues working in Naija but reading stuffs on this section makes me twice either to go or remain here. What necessary certifications do you think I would need to come to Canada, thanks
