This is a commendable way to go about service delivery by the Power Ministry. You acknowlege, apologise and inform. Fashola seems to be getting a grasp of his mandate. Having said that I still feel nothing is being done to address our strategic vulnerability. When you find yourself in critical danger, disadvantage or need the most important thing to do is develop alternatives or multiple redundancies. Aircraft have multiple alternative systems to keep them airborne in case of failure of parts. In this economy it will be foolhardy to think of survival without multiple jobs, businesses, investments. If power is so critical why depend solely, critically on gas (the rains have ceased so hydropower will be gone by next month), then with gas why rely solely on one gas delivery company. Why will a whole power station have only one gas pipe supplying it. That is no business. If the government wants this power problem solved quickly it has to open up the industry to not just alternative ideas but to increase the number of players in its club because injuries are part of the game. The industry now is just too narrow and 'carteled' to serve optimally. I don't even want to add the corrosive nature of that monster called NNPC to the mix which messes up everything it is involved in. 2 Likes 1 Share |

stellx:The immediate past leader of Nigeria had a PhD, his last minister for power was a professor in mechanical engineering, his government spent over $8.5 billion trying to fix the nation's rotten power sector, that's in addition to the $16bn spent by his predecessor for the same purpose. But what was the result at the end?... We still suffered the same pathetically erratic power supply up until the last week of his precedency when total national power generation crashed to about 1300mw (oh yes! as at the time the last guy handed over the leadership baton in 2015, we were generating less than 2000mw). So the question I ask is, what exactly is the relevance of the rant from the Senior Defender of Corrupt Person's (Ozekhome) which you just posted above? How is that relevant to this topic? 1 Like |

2019 election: Buhari should be careful because he is in danger-Junaid Mohammed reveals A Second Republic lawmaker, Dr. Junaid Mohammed, has told President Muhammadu Buhari that he (Buhari) is walking towards failure ahead of 2019 presidential election. Speaking with Vanguard, Mohammed noted that the president had not helped matters by not building his party, the All Progressives Congress, APC, at the national and state levels. According to the former lawmaker, instead of building the party, the president had rather positioned his family and friends around him to shape his politics. obailala: The rudderlessness of the Buhari government is a new low in the history of Nigeria. Bear in mind that this " system collapse" is coming about 24 hours after his much criticized empty new year speech that sounded more like a campaign manifesto in which he ululated his 7000 mw power generation. On power, he claims we are at an all time high in power generation but you and I know that our power sector has been bedevilled by poor distribution networks. So why the constant chest-beating when all the megawatts generated is not reaching our homes. Under this administration, our teaming youths have borne the short end of this democracy as it has made small the unemployment "wahala" we witnessed under the PDP era. I am no card carrying member of any political party in the land but with the way this country is being run, I see "Iran" being slowly replicated sooner in Nigeria. "Our mumu really don do" |
Re: Federal Ministry Of Power's Statement On The Blackout On The National Grid. by LordAdam16: 8:39am On Jan 03, 2018 |
Reference: Did you really think our grid was expertly developed? It wasn't, and that's the first inkling to know uninterrupted power supply will not be a thing in Nigeria until well after the 2020's. There's no magic that'd make it happen faster. Simple metering we've been unable to resolve since 2014. Because everyone and their grandma is passing the buck around. The major issue really are politicians who'd always rise up with fluffy promises and populist statements when all the experts know none of that is feasible. As at July last year, the national grid had collapsed 14 times in the first 6 months -- http://punchng.com/power-grid-has-collapsed-14-times-this-year/ In 2016, it collapsed 21 times in the first 6 months -- http://www.informationng.com/2016/07/nigerias-power-grid-collapsed-21-times-in-first-six-months-of-2016.html Usually tho', there was a same-day or at most 2-day (typically only a few hours) wait before partial restoration. It's been that way since the 2000s, but you can already see the political jobbers making a big deal about this particular instance. This is also not the first time the Ministry of Power is giving updates on total grid collapse, but because 2019 is around the corner and its the festive season, they're playing to the gallery. It started with Nebo, and is required by law. Even pre-privatization, these updates were made but it was usually retrospective. Before this month runs out there'd be another grid collapse. It's a structural issue and is inevitable until we revitalize the transmission segment (no one is ready to do that tho', since everyone simply wants to be remembered for how many wattage of capacity they added). And you and I know Fashola would not use the Twitter handle to give updates in subsequent times, instead he'd revert to the TCN updates which are required by law. It's all politics. Our strategic vulnerability will remain for the next 10 years at least. It would only be addressed until we've achieved stable (not yet steady) power supply. And including more players should quicken things, but only after resolving most of the issues plaguing the sector currently. Unfortunately, no one is being honest right now. And the bickering continues. Agreements are not honored on both sides (government and institutional players), payments are delayed or held on both sides, there are still disagreements on many rules and arrangements. It's a f*king madhouse. -Lord |

obailala: You have started this nonsense in 2018. GEJ did not spend $8.5b on the electricity sector. Provide a quote to back that up. GEJ privatized the sector. That's what he did for most of his tenure. Every money spent was in completing existing power plants, boosting transmission capacity, and rural electrification. The money he realized from selling off the generation and distribution part of PHCN was used to pay gratuity to the workers. Every last kobo of it. It is on record. OBJ wasted $16b on power, yet you guys were falling at his feet in 2015. If I were to blame him, I wouldn't say it's because of the amount he wasted, because he was our first president in the fourth republic and he at least had to try to make it work under government hands. What I'd condemn him for is how long it took him to realize that he had to privatize the sector. It took him too long. Why do you think he decided to sell the refineries? GEJ got elected, saw all the stats and knew throwing money down the pan would not yield anything tangible. He also found that restructuring NEPA to PHCN didn't do much either, so he decided to unbundle it and let the government run only the transmission part. It is that same transmission part that has collapsed an average of 30 times annually since 2014. Including in 2015, 2016, 2017, and yesterday was the first of this year. It would collapse again before this month is over. All of you politicizing power in Nigeria are completely disgraceful. And Nigeria was not generating 2000 MW when GEJ handed over. We have a bloody government-established website tracking power generation in Nigeria--https://nsong.org. It gives daily updates. The peak and lowest generation always varies and it's been between 4000-5000MW peak and 2500-38000MW off-peak since 2014. Occasionally, it drops below 2000MW, like it did in March 2016 when it dropped to 1580MW -- https://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/03/power-generation-drops-to-1580-6mw/. So, don't be stup*d! If you have nothing tangible to say, sh*t your trap! -Lord |
