Yam export is private sector driven. Government only provides support in terms of quality control and policies.
What is the function/essence of government agriculture minister and ministry? Does it mean that the minister of agriculture and unknown officials are working for private sector?

Please I need to know their function.

If you as a businessman choose to export Ugwu, provided it is not on a banned list of exports you are free to do so.

Government would only undertake inspections / quality control.

If you need funding for such an endeavour, again provided it is within a list of produce government finds as potential earners which need support, you could approach the agric banks, BOI etc.

Government does not go to the market to buy yam or cocoa.

I hope it comes to fruition.
Now that I think about it shouldn't we produce enough for ourselves before we export to other places?

360metrosports:
The Technical Committee on Nigeria Yam Export Programme says it is targeting the export of about 480 tonnes of yams, equivalent to 20 containers, every month in 2018.

Prof. Simon Irtwange, the Chairman of the committee, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Monday that the target would be achieved if all the challenges, which yam exporters experienced in 2017, were surmounted.

Irtwange said that the U.S. had made a request for the supply of five containers monthly, which amounted to 120 tonnes of yams.

“If everything works out well, the U.S. authorities say they will need about five containers every month and one container contains 24 tonnes of yams.

“We are trying to aggregate the demand from other countries; so by the time we put everything together, we should be thinking of exporting about 20 containers of yams on a monthly basis.

“When you multiply 20 by 24, the total is 480 tonnes of yams.

“We have a work plan and we have a lot of activities that we have already pencilled down.

“We are working with relevant government agencies to provide the necessary support for the programme,’’ he said.

Irtwange said that the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) had made available the Ikorodu Lighter Terminal to facilitate the packaging and movement of yams meant for export.

He said that the committee was also working with the NPA to get people who would invest in constructing yam pack houses at the terminal.

“The NPA has already given us the Ikorodu Lighter Terminal, where we can bring our yams and do all the packaging before moving them down to the ports.

“That way, we will avoid the gridlock in Apapa because now, we are using batches to move the yams from Ikorodu to Apapa,’’ he added.

On the challenges which yam exporters encountered in 2017, Irtwange said that the committee had forwarded a report to the Federal Government on possible ways of tackling the perceptible hitches.

“On the issue of transportation, we need cold trucks; we also need yam conditioning centres.

“Presently, there is only one conditioning centre owned by the Nigeria Export Promotion Council in Zaki-Ibiam, Benue State, but that is not enough, we need more.

“On the issues of packaging and production of cartons for the yams, we are also hoping to have local investors.

“Right now, there are only two companies that can do this for us — an Indian company in Ibadan and a Chinese company in Lagos — and the problem is that in most cases, they don’t take orders for little quantities of cartons for production.

“A container will take about 1,200 cartons and when you go to the companies for the production of 1,200 cartons, they will say it is too small.

“We are also thinking that if there are people that can produce the cartons in small quantities, things will be okay. We want to get those who can produce small quantities of cartons for sale to yam exporters,’’ he added.

Citizens of Nigerians by the millions are hungry/starving.

Over 2.5 million Nigerians are sick, malnourished n starving to death in IDP camps while buhari's n his cohorts are exporting yamhuh

I wish

a). they lie with convincing numbers... always quoting in the millions what is really in the hundreds.

b). we need to bring down the cost of food... that will also help with reducing forex (e.g. if yam is cheaper than imported rice), people will opt for yam. Why export a staple when we don't have enough to drive down price?

Food is available in Nigeria. Actually reasonably priced. Just that the poor still cannot afford it.

Only steady double digit economic growth above 15% per year, provision of social safety net, a dedicated sound agric policy and security of farmers from herdsmen can alleviate that over time.

Food is not available in Nigeria, We spend billions of dollars anually importing food.

Food in Nigeria is very expensive. A cheap plate of home made food in Nigeria costs 150 - 250......Multiply it by 3 n then by 30 days, that sums to be around 18k per month.

Food is not reasonably priced in Nigeria, If it where, then the poor will be able to afford it.

Ok thanks for the above.

By international standards, food is not too expensive. Just that unemployment/underemployment is too high.
Compared to even Benin Republic a plate of food is cheaper in 9ja. Same with fuel.

The reason cars and bend down select are cheaper in 9ja is that Benin govt smartly set low seaport duties. Thereby undercutting Lagos/Nigerian ports. Knowing much of the good will go to 9ja.

Food that we import in Africa are basically due to dumping from the West. It's cheaper to mass produce rice in USA than small 9ja or Ghana farmers using manually labour. Western broilers mass produced are ready in 6 weeks. Almost twice that time in 9ja to get broilers ready.

If we can mechanise farming, production costs will reduce. Importing will become less attractive.

Oga food in Nigeria is expensive, don't bring in baseless arguments to justify why Nigeria imports "expensive foods.

Ur still dishing out excuses to make it seem like Nigerian food is expensive, Pls leave gasoline out of this matter.

I guess you are not that exposed to know.

If something is expensive, it is only in relation to average income. My error there....I meant a plate of food is more expensive in Cotonou than Lagos/Nigeria.

Cost of living is very high in Switzerland for example. But incomes are high too. Which consistently makes Switzerland to be rated as one the countries with high living standard/QoL.

Things happen for a reason. In your emotional and sentimental out-bursts, analysis and reason have no place.

Once you have visited around 30 to 40 countries across several continents, you will be in a better position to understand the relative aspect of income to living cost. And how many countries have managed to make food quite affordable.

Food is expensive in Nigeria, it's even a luxury.

Stop complicating issues.

Most Nigerians can't afford a decent balanced diet.

And this is because of poverty in Nigeria. Nigeria is one of the poorest countries on earth.

If you join in the production of yam, it will have an effect in the market price. You can even export it too, make money or give it out for free.

The above is completely unconnected with exportation of yam in times of Nigeria's hunger.
