I knew because when I read your post I could link it to someone I know who served in Sokoto, was given an extension, was in my department way back in school and I could guess the name knowing the person loved writing articles.

Keep jollofing.

Who could this be in my dept? If my classmate, then this has to be AD, now in bankPhb! If my junior or senior, can't guess.

My dear it was the most horrifying experience in my life, I'm not trying to scare u. Two of my friends were raped in Yobe by some hoodlums. What was their excuse? "they dressed in male attires outside the camp" Honey if u don't intend to work in a government institution here, angry u might as well just forget about it.Except you're the very adventurous type.

Hi all,

i served in Akwa ibom state at first i felt terrified about going there cos i've never been to the south south region. my primary assignment was at the ministry of rural development Uyo the state capital. It was a complete waste of time at the ministry, no experience gained cos they practically did nothing but come to work every day sit down doing nothing. Getting accommodation was hell for most of us well i was lucky to get a comfortable house for 65k.
All in all i still had fun, toured round the south south region n also had the opportunity to attend the calabar festival. Uyo town was fun for me.

NYSC is a WASTE of one's precious time. Its a scheme in my view, that scatters one's plan in life. I was working before I came for service but cos of NYSC am off job without compensation of any sort. I was undergoing professional training where I was working and as well had the opprtunity of working for and meeting top men in Abuja, but NYSC brought me to Lagos and left me at the mercy of a firm where I sit Ideal each day without adding any value to my life and knowledge. NYSC nearly left me on the streets cos of not having an accomodation in Lagos. As I write these comments am in the office am posted to doing nothing but surf the internet and read books. Its boring, its annoying and could be disheartning and frustrating. Well if u have ur way I suggest u dont try this joke called NYSC cos u could regret. But if u have got political ambitions, u could go ahead. I hope to relocate to Abuja soon though but I must tell u its not worth it.

Shebi u dey under AC for your office, get internet and books to read. Maybe if u had been in Gudu, on Niger republic border, in Sokoto state, you would have been better off wink

i was posted 2 warri and served in their state owned TV station. aside the meager allowances being paid 2 corp members, warri almost killed me wit fun and lafta. but i almost wasnt able 2 save cos tins were a bit more xpensive since its perceived 2 be a rich oil state. i had a diary of my everyday activities thru out the service year which i ll cherish 4 a long time.
Anyway, tins need 2 be improved upon especially allowances. 9700 is 2 meager 4 an adult as salary.

Served in Bauchi 2004.

I was exempted from marching cos I was too tall, they couldnt get my shoe size and Khaki size. So i was always in Mami with the soldiers as we would be yabbing ourselves. They would call me Dogonkofa.

@those posted 2 Edo state, Edo State is a kul place (provided u are posted 2 one of d major towns). I'm a batch 'B' Corps member current serving @ Auchi Polytechnic,Auchi (President of Auchi Poly Corper's Forum), Lyf in service in d past 8-9 months has been filled wiv lots of HIGHS and LOWS. Inadequate water supply, high cost of food stuff, exploitation by market women especially if u are seen on uniform, delay in payment of allowance, embarrasment 4rm your Zonal Inspector, fear of being kidnapped are jst a few of d problems 1 has experienced. The only aspect i've bn enjoyin is their GIRLS. Hope u understand.
To sum it up,dis whole issue of 1 year service is nufin but a drag.

@ daralex

I was filled with nostalgia on reading your piece.I remebered the political rigours we went through in 2005/2006 trying to agree a name for Auchi Poly corp members before we finally agreed on Auchi Polytechnic Corp Members Forum. The President at the time is now a lecturer at Abia Poly while some members of the forum are lecturers in Federal Poly Nekede and Abia Poly. One of us asked to be retained at Auchi Poly and she was while the other guy stayed back at Auchi Poly staff school. I work with Access Bank and another comrade is with Nigerian Breweries.

I hope you guys keep up the good work and please dont impregnate our girls oo. . .lol. Nice place. I can attest to that

I served in Bayelsa state, precisely in ofoni town in Sagbama L.G.A. Serving in Ofoni was really fun, even if there was no basic social amenity like light, g.s.m network, portable water and so on. The place is only accessible by water. I passed out on the 16th of June 2011, which made me a batch b corps members. The one year i spent in Bayelsa was the most funfilled of all my life even if I grew up in Both Lagos and Abuja. I was posted to a secondary school, so, I was really close to my students. I got lots of plantain, garri, rabbit etc, meaning that I got a lot of foodstuffs.
Although, the place was totally underdeveloped, the corps members made it funfilled. Every night we usually have 'fellowship' where we discuss on current issues in the form of a parliament. We had a chairman, speaker, chairlady, women leader, minister of women affairs and kokolets etc.
I really had fun in NYSC, and It's been more that a month that I left Ofoni but I always dream of going back in order to continue the fun we usally have. The consolation i have is that it is a neccessity to go for NYSC and to leave after a year to face the Nigerian state.

Hi,
I have lived in England all of my life and after graduating from university I feel it's time for me to take a step into the unknown. Nigeria has always really intrigued me and although my siblings and friends who grew up in Nigeria yet are currently schooling in the UK are adamant not to return I really want to discover my native-land. I am kinda nervous about NYSC though. Lots of my friends say that I will be exploited and made fun of seeing as I've never been in Nigeria longer than 3 weeks, vaguely understand the language, and have a very strong english accent. Are people really that mean to international students? and does anyone know if one is allowed to stay at the camp by day and go home by night?

strong english accent - this might work to your advantage. most Nigerians would want to be friends with "omo yankee"

How old are you, genger and do you have close family members in Nigeria who you are close to and can rely on for help?

You don't know what you are missing,
if you don't serve as a corper.
Unfortunately, most graduate are spoon fed
right from primary school, 'never ready to explore.
have you ever seen the Guilder ultimate search?
the love life on camp for the smart and loving ones,
the sport competitions, the camp fire nite, platoon politics,
opportunity to know more about nigeria and the military,
freedom to do things on your own, opportunity to manage yourself in
another man's land, semi- couple's life, oooh! NCCF and the rural rugged,
The list go on and on and on,
who no go, no go know, who no know na upakia, however, who
wan know too much nko?

Oga,

No matter how much fun you had serving in Sokoto, it can never be compared to serving in Bayelsa. Nothing could have been more fulfilling than that although I was always running a shift of 2 to 3 weeks on and 1 to 2 weeks off because of some other commitments. The only fear now is the insecurity in the country which sometimes quizzes the relevance of NYSC.

Bayelsa is filled with fun all through because the ordeals are minimal compared to the enjoyment and the people are very loving. You can see the marginalisation of the oil rich South South region yet, this people are determined to make a life irrespective of how tough it may seem.
I served in Twon, Brass and it is an island however, we had the basic amenities of life such as light and water courtesy Agip although the water sometimes was an eye sore. As for telecommunications, we had all 3 major networks that were in the country as at when I served and the school I served was a very interesting one though I had challenges with many of the students not being serious and having a dream not too good for their future.

I served at Anyama-Ogbia, a river-rine community about 45mins from Swali waterside in Yenagoa. There was no water and electricity but we had the luxury of a very good corpers' lodge. (2009 batch A). It was fun teaching and seeing ur students grow academically. One Pastor Newton of Assemblies of God made our stay very memorable. I'll never 4get that man! Bayelsa was fun. Plenty of plantain and snails. If u like the ladies u r in 4 a ride cos they will be pursuing u,even ur students! It's always a thing of joy when i get a call 4rm one of my students abt the progress they hv made. The feeling is indescribable!

I served in Ogun state batch a feb, 2007. I used connection to try and influence my posting to lag as I have lived all my life in lagos apart from having my degree from OAU. I was dazed when i found my name on the list of corpers posted to Ogun. I got to camp and It took me and some friends i met there 2days to register despite using all our wits and tricks to fast track the registration for ourselves. Mosquito chop nonsense for my life for three weeks.

One of my friends started going out with the daughter of a woman that sells beer in the mami market, so we always get invite for parties in sagamu town as the locals like owambe die. All we do is give the police at the gate 20 naira. I only jogged outside of the camp twice, i realized i could fake being dizzy as the every day morning drill was too much for me to bear. My friends usually leave the camp to write banks aptitude test in far away Ibadan. Me i just dey camp dey chill. Soon we started seeing bank cars coming into our compound to select corpers they want for service year. who talk say leg no dey, leg pass leg ooo. All my friends that left camp to write aptitude test up and down were posted to secondary schools.

We started hearing rumors that some people would be posted to some Riverside areas and some border town with Benin republic, sharp sharp i left camp for home to scout for schools in areas that shared borders with Lagos. i found one, I went to see their principal, introduced myself and begged them to send the camp a letter specifically requesting that they want me to serve with them. I only report at the school once a month when we have all those weekly meeting at council office. I spent my one year writing professional exams and also prepare for my Masters abroad. My home was just 30minutes away by road from the school I served

Hi all,

I served in Calabar, the Afang town. It was a wonderful experience. Though, going to the camp from Calabar took over 2 hrs. But the experience was fun filled. I was a member of the OBS while on camp and also ushered during the "swearing in" ceremony. I served with an agency focused on providing humanitarian service to disaster victims within the State.
I met very lovely pple there while serving. Travelled a lot during the period, visited almost all the Local Governments of Cross-River.
However, am of the opinion that NYSC should be scrapped because of the recurrent security issues within the country.
