Wow... That 3,783 students admitted in UI represents just about 6.7% of the total students that choose UI...

This is indeed very pathetic, saddening and yet another strong proof that there is need for reform and restructing not just in our economy, "but also in the education sector."

#Improve more on the capabilities of the existing schools, build more Federal and State universities...

How can you say we should build more Federal and State Universities when the one we have cannot be managed.

That is not a good idea, please.
Go to some of these institutions, even the UI and you will be shocked.
I agree with you nonetheless, that there should be Reforms:
Strengthen our informal sector
Strengthen our monotechnics,etc...
Leave a paper-centric attitude we now exhibit

UI for me is one of the most unbiased institution in the South

And jamb will still withhold the list, ask unizik, jamb is still holding the list of chem, mech, civil and some other departments unizik sent to them since last year October. They claim those courses lost their accreditation and need to be reaccredited before they will release the list.

I foresee same happening to UI

We already have federal and state universities in all 36 states plus the FCT. We have enough universities already. We should be talking about improving their capabilities and not building more. Then grants should be available for students by the government so they can afford the private and state schools that are expensive.

Most students can't meet the admission requirement of UI, still they keep trying.
No harm in trying tho, but students should note their standard and go for schools they could easily gain admission

They claim or those courses truly lost their accreditation? How on earth would Unizik recommend students for admission in courses that have not been accredited?

While I respect your view I think it will be childish of UI to do that. There is no doubt that UI has always wanted to go fully PG and reasons vary from the fact that fees are higher for PG students, they constitute less nuisance unlike UG students and in terms of research PG students normally have higher outputs than UG students. Also, UI doesn't have the facilities to handle 4000 UG students and is traditionally known to favour smaller sizes of intakes to minimise the attendant nuisance noticeable in other FG universities. Lastly, I might add that UI still believes in taking in the very bright students which accounts for its low intakes of UG students and it's strict admission process for PG students.
Statsocial:
UI is deliberately taking less students to improve its Times Higher Ranking. A large undergraduate body does a university little good. By taking very small amount of UG they would have reduced the student - lecturer ratio and would give them the opportunity to retain PG-which is a Gold mine for rankings. UNN has been unsuccessfully trying to break into Times for years now. They might need to tow the path of UI to make their top 1000 ranking come through.

Their decision to allocate about 70% of the studentship slot to PG is mostly financial.
Most people know this.

just compare the UG and PG fees and see the Stark difference in proportion.

This is impressive, UI is an institution I respect in the South west. With such acceptance rates, lecturer-student ratio is bridged to a favourable standard.

However, the incessant strike action is what UI should look into, probably pull out of ASUU, NASU, SSANU and the likes, seek better means of generating funds besides federal government allocations, attract alumni funding (which I'm sure they're on it) and UI would rise above to be among the top 900 in the world.

A lot of people ignore less popular schools for the popular ones because of some allure. This is what they get when they want "school wey get name", just wasting their own time
Hey girl no school has standard if you can read hard then you can gain admission into any uni but the thing is the carrying capacity of Nigerian uni's is very low thereby living room for only a few to be admitted. The fact is our education system is poor, this same people who you say aren't u.i standard if they try out a school abroad many of them will be admitted.

every school has standard. Some schools will accept scores of 180 in JAMB, some others if you don't have at least 250, don't waste your time.

For these 56,000 that chose UI, maybe only 2,000 chose BUK or 1,000 chose UDU....there will be a higher percentage of entrants from those schools. A lot of Nigerian students punch above their weight in these things.

And reading hard does not guarantee passing exams. It is one thing to read, it is another thing to understand what you read, it is another thing to understand the questions in exams and it is another to answer it satisfactorily. So, no, not everyone who reads hard is good enough to enter UI

Thats a lie I have a cousin who had been tryin to gain admission into U.I some years back but couldn't get into U.I but now the dude is a student at the University Of Miami. The fact is just that our education system is poor, infact some countries don't accept Nigerian Bsc certificates
