I told a friend of mine exactly this last year November when a teacher gave one of his kid sister 40 different question in mathematics and to be submitted next day. Imagine someone in primary 2 with all sort of fractions, quantitative reasoning and so on.

I am of two minds about this

1.I went to a primary school....centuries ago...where homework was given every day. It was quite tough, but looking back, I appreciate it..in the sense that it enabled me to practice what i learned that day. That is what homework is for...practice.

2.Still on the homework thing....in real life, you may end up working for long hours...so time to get used to it.

3.Having said that, the man does have a point about some schools leaving the bulk of work to the parents. (He mentioned China...where such things still happen, contrary to what he said). Schools should use the working hours to teach.

Very true.

In S.Korea...some kids don't get home till 11pm...from cram school.

I would not want to bring up a child in either country.

That's what makes them weirdly "smart"...

Some homework be like:
Example: (4÷2) × (2+1)
Apply bodmas
2 × 3 = 6
Take home
1. 4x - 27y +16= 9
Find x , and y

2. √9+16 - 78= 3y,
Find y
Etc....

No, he is right.

1.Your pic mentioned that they get no exams till year 3. Well...cram schools..or juku as they call them in Japan, start from around year 5...and go on till high school/sec school. The goal is to get the student into a prestigious university..like Tokyo U for example.

2.Cram schools usually hold in the evenings. And they last till the late hours.

3.Also,cram schools are for the SERIOUS students. The seriousness students finish school at 16 and start working.

4.South Korea and China have similar systems. In South Korea...the version of cram schools can last till 11PM.And..yes..the kids have to go to school the next day.

More info here.

Gross exaggeration... No teacher can give an assignment that will take 6 hrs to solve.. Besides the reading culture is almost dead, so many things to distract the students this days outside their playing time.. Though too much of everything isn't good, including assignments...

Exactly what my friend was complaining about the other day. And when I went through the assignments, I discovered that even I couldn't begin to even understand most of it. One of the many assignments was filled with pure research questions and I was wondering how the kid was going to carry out that kinda research. She was totally clueless. This is a little girl of about 6/7years old.

If you not writing exams what is there to cram ?

Some seven years back ,I read a documentary on the BBC.tittled "TOP OF THE CLASS"...you can Google it,I have the podcast.

research discovered that SCANDINAVIAN, countries perform better than any region in student score...the main reason was that they don't start schooling until the age " shocked 9"
Some pre age schooling is pure torture ...the stress is beyond their mental ability

How did you arrive at the age mentioned...the writer said he started at third grade of elementary school; so what age is that exactly?

It is to prepare them to get into very good universities....and it starts by getting into a good primary and sec school....

The university entrance exams in Japan, China and S.Korea are very very tough.Prep starts yesterday.

While compulsory education begins in England at the age of five (with many children actually starting at four), in countries such as Sweden, Denmark and Finland, school doesn't begin until the age of seven (BBC)

Plus...to be a teacher in Finland....you must have a MASTERS degree.

The link you posted earlier...it is stated that a "first grade students is of age of six"( via Google)

So my conclusion : cramming doesn't start until age of 9...that is still better than Nigerian

I'm happy that alas somebody is speaking up about this issue. I can relate to all what this man is saying.

During my IT in lagos, i stayed in my sisters house and the task of doing homework for my nephews fell on me. We spent not less than 4 hours every night doing homework for the three kids. Infact, it was more of teaching them afresh because they never understood any of the few class works they did during the day. I'd shout and pet until i got tired. No time for my studies after coming back from work. And each of the kids pay about 65k per term.

Honestly, something has to be done about this matter.

grin If you don't give them now and you see your neighbor's kids busy with theirs, you'll still complain. So we understand.

A friend once told me. He said, "Joseph... This town parents are illiterates. Let's bombard this kids with homework as to make parents to take us serious. grin Some said their kids play a lot at home. Please don't pity them."

Truth is most teachers are lazy to even mark and score appropriately. To them, marking this homework gives them ample free time to gossip about. After all they're busy too.
Some kids have learnt this. They would never do theirs, after all, na to flog last last. We end up recycling and producing same garbage of students.
The best is class quiz or class work. Let them go home and read. Yes they won't, yes we know. Give them something little they already know to keep them excited and busy. Weekend should be for resting, except for special kids that requires weekend lessons.
I don't subscribe to too much homework. Is it not a child who understands class work that will do well in his or her homework?

Assess this kids in class, that's what you're being paid for. If I have the time and chance wouldn't have sent them to your school. Because we know you manipulate and teach lubbish. You're just their waiting for a better picture.
But for what friends and neighbors would say, let them just follow their mates and be there while we have our time to hustle.
Some parents would want their children to be in school till they're back from work. Some don't like the midterm break and some don't like the long vacation. grin
Some parents don't like their kids staying at home, so we understand all this. So we're your nannies, just pay we need that your money. I know you would pay in disguise that they're doin' extra lessons... Lol. grin Who is fooling who? grin We already know that you're dodging from your kids disturbance and all, reason you brought them here. So don't expect any sudden change because we too are not your garbage dump. lipsrsealed

Imagine giving a 2 yr old, maths, English, science, drawing and computer homework every day. It's not sustainable. I can understand if the homework is weekends only.
Re: Angry Father Calls Out Private Schools For Giving Students Too Much Homework by ezehisaac(m): 9:01am On Jan 12, 2018
Most times, it’s not the teachers, but the administrators that force the homework on students. They think that doing so would impress the parents to think that the school is doing a great work.

I often argue with my brother who is a principal in one international school whenever he complains that teachers don’t give enough homework to their students.

Imagine going for holidays, and you ask every teacher to give a homework each day as long as the holidays last, then you would ask, what is the essence of the holidays

A child needs to first learn the basic things before learning how to do research. That is why we have different levels of education.
