You re right. The ant is very big and usually moves alone. It emits a strong repulsive odour. It's called Ikamudu in yoruba. I recall a single bite to a friend of mine in the boarding school bush then. The guy was all swollen up like a pig and he was stripped naked and writhing in pain for days with palm oil all over his body.

I dont think their bit is as painful as you painted it, it only causes unpleasant itching which can last up to 12 hours or even more. They are very much in my village, you see them more during season of maize.
