I grew up being told and thinking Govt jobs provide a soft landing to the harshness of life. Been in the private sector for two years now, best decision I made. If you are the type that loves challenge, professional development and isn't looking for monotonous work, the manner with which you'll grow financially in the private sector will amaze you.

If you are good enough, government pay grade levels can't pay you enough.

Do yourself a favour just walk to any Federal Ministry in Abuja or Federal center offices in your state. Particularly Ministry offices in state and ask anyone how much do they earn?The same reason why bank pays contract staff 51k plus. If is possible for me to post payslip i will but for security reasons i will not. Same reason why Ministry workers dont go to office and attitude to work is zero.Salary is graded into A,B,C
class C is for Ministry worker e.g Grade 08 step 02 earns 51k plus or less , Class B is for some parasta or Dept. like Universities non teaching staff or any research institute with take home of 80k to 90k plus moreso para-military falls into dis class like civil defense,prison,FRSC etc (take home is 120k) while customs earn less than any para-military (80k plus). Class A NNPC,DPR,PPR...earns 180k to 200k Plus and they are few department like them.Summary: Class C worker are majority in the system, class B are not that much while Class A are very Few workers who enjoys Federal govt. job while others cry. pardon my mistake because write up was done with phone. Leave mattter because na Nigeria we dey!

Mr Man my take home was 73k when i was in 8/2 so don't tell me what i know. Go figure out take home of every ministry before coming to say things you don't know.

Do you work in Ministry? and which Ministry?Are you Information officer or life stock officer in Agric? If you want to know I'm an Administrative officer in Ministry and i have been working for the pass 6years now. i can show you my payslip frm 2012 till date. and other payslips if you dont mind and take you to OAGF's office where IPPIS is located free of any charges.Where you got your own 73k as a Minstry worker then will show me. Mayb you work in a parastatal or department not Ministry. Its Called MDAs M for Ministries D for Departments A for agencies. Ministry worker Admin. ofiicer on Level 08 step 2 goes home with 51k less not even plus Mr Man.Do your research well b4 you castigate.

Funny how people spend a fortune just to get fixed for a government Jon and end up being paid salary of drivers in private organization.
I remember towards the end of my service year in the north, a very intelligent friend from plateau told me he is willing to give all his nysc savings and even hustle to add more to it provided he sees somebody to fix him in any government agency,parastatal or paramilitary.
I just told him am not interested. Today he is a graduate assistant in the department he graduated from while am in the private sector getting the money. Tho I plan to go into academics later but I will follow the step of some of my lecturers; Having gotten enough experience in the private sector with pockets of investment to show for I will then go into academics for the passion of passing knowledge. That way I won't need to mandate students to buy handout to supplement my meager income.

What most of the commenters above failed to write is that both sectors have its perks and downsides and whoever is choosing one over the other is basing his/her decision on which perk he/she prioritizes.

Perks
Private Sector - Bigger Pay, better chance of career development
Public Sector - Job security, less stressful, better chance of eating out of national cake.
