London to Lagos: why Repats are making the move

BBC Minute's Hannah Ajala is a British-born Nigerian. She wanted to explore the idea of young Nigerians living in the UK returning 'home'. When she posted the question on her social media, she got hundreds of responses from 'repats' - people who return to their country of origin - considering the move.

Yewande Osamein, The TV presenter: 'I always yearned to be part of Nollywood'

TV presenter Yewande Osamein has moved back to Nigeria from the UK because it offered her more exciting job opportunities.
She's been in Lagos for almost two years; there's been some tough times but now she says doesn't want people to know she grew up in England because she wants to blend in.
She told BBC Minute the only thing she'd come back to the UK for is McDonald's.

The musician: 'Moving back ... is a calling, something that I have to do'

Nigeria has produced some of the world's most famous musicians like Fela Kuti and Wizkid, now saxophonist and singer Sahvannah Amaka wants to follow in their footsteps. She hopes to leave the UK and move to Lagos to pursue her music career. She says she's ready for any culture shocks which might get thrown at her.

The lawyer: 'Nigeria is buzzing, there's a lot happening'

Lawyer Aji Ayorinde is considering swapping his life in London for Lagos. The 25-year-old left Nigeria when he was two but is thinking about returning home in the future. Aji told BBC Minute Britain isn't seen as preferable to Nigeria anymore and he wouldn't lose money by moving.

The business coach: 'The community spirit is a lot better'

Business coach Stephanie Onwunali was born in Nigeria. She moved to the UK for 10 years and is now back in Nigeria for good. In the next episode of our "Repats series", she tells us about not truly feeling at home in the UK and how the decision to move back is working out for her.

The thing is, if u are coming from a country like that people assume you really know what you are doing so getting a very good job n opportunity will be sooo much easier.

A lizard in Nigeria cannot become a crocodile overseas. The world is in "turmoil" and solutions to problems is what the world is looking for. If you can't be part of the solution, you will remain at the lowest level of the economy wherever you find yourself.

The fact is most Nigerians who go to Europe and Asia end up coming back. But US, Canada and Australia? Lie lie...rarely. America nah the worst. If your brother dey go America especially at a young age " teens and 20s" tell him bye like you will never see him again. I say that because all my uncles that went to America, not one out of 7 have come back home. 3 that went to Europe and Asia, come back regularly. That said, the ones in America send money regularly. They just don't want anything to do with the shithole, meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeehn. I spoke to one of them yesterday, asked him when are you coming back it's been 29 yrs, he kept saying "I ain't coming back to that shithole, God damn that shithole. Trump keeping it real, meeehn." LOL.

Good for them, and there are equally thousands of students fighting tooth and nail to stay back after there studies in UK; if you have a young family and want a decent Education, healthcare and well being for them, UK presents that opportunity for you..

Before the shithole commenters and nay sayers start to wash up the thread. I'll like to say it's just about time.
There's this general feeling of looking for acceptance in everyone which the oversea countries are not so good at assuring it's migrants.

There’s nothing in this abroad everyone is running to. It’s like believing before you make it in Nigeria you must come to Lagos

It's not really about people assuming they know what they are doing because they come from up town. I have a friend who's friend was course mate with a sitting governor's son in the UK. He's back to Nigeria now and already has picked up a massive job in Abuja. His father is also wealthy.

You see Nigeria, the rich and wealthy run the country. They have squeezed out the lower class and even the middle class. The money keeps revolving around them. Is it a coincidence that while many youths are screaming about leaving the country and are complaining about no jobs et al, that these ones are planning to come back home? No. You think they would come back and join the labor market moving around with worn out shoes, praying and fasting to get a job or opportunity of 50,000? These guys from up town have built solid links, have solid backing or their parentshave built it already for them.

This country is filled with opportunities, but the elite run the show. If you want to get a MEANINGFUL job, win MASSIVE contracts, you have to be part of them. They want to know who you are, who your father is, which university outside the country is your alma mata. Your profile basically.
There are those who have gotten great jobs and massive contracts as nobodies or without any connections, but the possibility of an outsider getting in is a single digit %. As the country gets tougher and harder, the rich tighten the nozzle and opportunities become more scarce for those outside their circle.
