Cylinder holds gas in it under pressure, so much that the gas is liquified, this pressure forces the gas through when you turn on your gas appliance. Now, when you use most of the gas, there is less pressure, maybe close to atmospheric. The only way you can make use of the gas left is to heat up the cylinder, more heat more pressure.
