Is It Wrong For This Young Lady To Have Accepted Lunch Before Being Interviewed? by wristbangle: 9:40pm On Jan 31, 2018
A young lady was invited to an interview for an entry level role. She arrived at the venue exactly 10minutes before the scheduled time and was asked to stay at the waiting room.

40 minutes later, a young man worked into the waiting room and apologised to her for the delay. He explained to her that the head of HR is trying to resolved an issue with an irate customer but will be with her shortly.

An hour 30mins later, the young man came back to apologize for further delay. This time around asked her if he could ger her lunch. Apparently this young lady was hungry and could no longer bare it. She accepted and a sumptuous meal was served.

She ate to her satisfaction but in the process got her white shirt stained with oil.

Not long after she finished her meal, the head of HR sent for her and immediately the interview began. The first question she was asked was "What happened to your shirt" She explained and the interview continued. At the end of the interview, she was told the usual "we will get back to you". When she got home, she narrated her experience to an HR friend.

Her friend told her it was wrong to have accepted the lunch as it could be used against her during decision making.

Do you agree with the HR friend?

I believe it was done to test her patience and focus on her objective, she didn't go there to eat but to get a job, if refreshment was initially stated as a part of the interview then it won't be wrong.

Bro, I am equally perplexed like you when I read the story.

For crying out loud, why would a recruiter judge a candidate based on her starving stomach knowing that they were the one that caused it by delaying her.

Some organisation judgement to access potential employees is horrible.

As for me, I totally disagree with her HR friend

Madam, this method to test her competence is archaic and seriously flawed. She might pretend and eventually collapsed during the interview session. On whose account would that read for. She didn't do anything wrong

Collapse? After just three hours? Then what will happen if she needs to work eight hours straight without food for something urgent? If you're going for an interview, you should go prepared, all round. What about people that are made to wait for 6-10 hours nko? You didn't go there to eat, you went for a job, wisdom should tell you what to do.

Do you even know if she has been fasting, didn't eat well in the previous days or an ulcer patient?. Yes circumstances happen that put an employee in a position not to eat which occurs on rare occasion ( it's not deliberate) but using this criteria to judge a potential employee is quite wicked.

. Abeg forget all these protocols. The oyibo people we are imitating don't do that. Nigeria so called HR are wicked. What kind of testing of patience is that? If you went for a job interview you should die abi. If they didn't give her the job because of that let them go with their job. You don't know if she is an ulcer patient, she should keep quiet and die because of interview which at the end the salary will not be more than 40k

All these are mere excuses , any company can use any criteria they deem fit when it comes to recruiting workers, any company is as good as its workforce so don't blame them if they aim for the best.

Africans and mediocrity and inferiority complex ...smh, what brought in imitating 'oyinbo people '? if imitating oyinbo people will yield better results then why go for less? Do you even have any idea of what preparation means? So not eating for less than 3hours will kill you? hahahhahahhahahh.... you guys are funny Abeg, with mindsets like this, little wonder this country is not not going anywhere.

This is one of the reason our workforce in this country is pulling down the goals of an organisation to get achieved within a specific period. HR Professionals/Hiring Managers need to re evaluate their recruiting skills before it's too late.

It is true that the recruiting skill of firms in this country is lacking the ability to select capable employees for various positions afterall employment is rarely based on merit else we won't be having a dullard for a president but we ain't talking about the recruiting skill of the firm here but about the decision of the lady , whatever happened to courtesy and simply saying no, thank you! Or maybe later? It was just for 2 hours 10mins for Christ sake! It's not about being real or fake, it's about perseverance, patience, focus , etc.

let just be rude to HR because everything is a set up infact when they call you in to interview,we shouldnt go becaue if we go it means we do not have leadership skills

there is nothing like that,if hr offers me food,i go chop am and be satisfied at least they wasted my time and didnt act professionally by interviewing me at the said time.

problem with the scenario is that giving someone food does not determine whether a candidate is good or not

the problem in Nigeria is that jobseekers are use to fear and intimidation tactics maybe because it is their first job,it like a do or die affairs so they miss opportunity to be themselves and act like a confident jobseeker

do not over analyse anything,if they want you they will call you, simple as that.

All these useless standards to assess job seekers are because there are no jobs in this country. Most of these frustrated HR just capitalize on it to torment and punish job seekers.

To hell with their dumb job and recruitment process

I disagree with you. I think she was right in accepting the lunch and the company did the right thing by the offer. I will only criticise her for the stain. She should’ve been more carefful, the stain made her look very careless.

Lol... In a country where job is scarce any technique can be used to disqualify you. A friend of mine applied for about 5 good jobs online in Canada they all called her up to resume after a few days... No physical interview, no oil stain nonsense.

Next time if you go for interview and they ask you if you need a seat just say no..... It may be a bait to disqualify you in a shithole country.

Thank u jare. The issue of her eating or not wouldn't have come up if she didn't stain her shirt. The stain ruined her smart appearance and created a distraction. Oil stain on white is easily noticeable. I've gone to interviews before where food was offered. Most big coys and multinationals do not see eating at the office as a big deal. In the HR mind it was probably time for lunch, so they gave her food.

She should have stayed focused....no be food she come chop angry

What if the interviewing panel was ready DURING her meal? They would wait because she's the Queen of England?

If i was to hire and 2 people are equally qualified ....i would pick the one that is more disciplined.

In the long run, someone like this would attend to her personal needs at the expense of that of the organization.

Sounds cold but it is the brutal truth

No. The only thing wrong is being carried away by food to the extent of staining your cloth. They offered her food for delaying her so there is nothing wrong with accepting.
