ABUJA— Members of the House of Representatives were, yesterday, divided over a motion seeking to intervene in the ongoing trial of former spokesman of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Olisa Metuh.

Metuh on stretcher, arrives court in Ambulance Metuh, who is being tried for alleged money laundering, was brought to the Federal High Court, Abuja, on Monday on a stretcher, after the trial judge, Justice Okon Abang, threatened to withdraw his bail. At yesterday’s plenary, Chris Azubogwu, a PDP lawmaker from Anambra State, raised a motion, entitled the ‘’Urgent need to save the life of Olisa Metuh.” Azubogwu said the life of the former PDP spokesman is in danger following his prolonged detention in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC. He said it was sad that Metuh had to appear in court on a stretcher on the order of the court, amid his “deteriorating” health condition. He, therefore, prayed the House to urge the court to grant the politician the opportunity for overseas treatment “so as to attend to his health”. But Emmanuel Orker-Jev, an APC lawmaker from Benue State, drew the lawmakers’ notice to Order 9 Rule 1 of the house. He said the order stipulates that no decision shall be made on any matter whose judgement is pending in such a way it will give prejudice for any party involved. He said: “If the court does not give him fair hearing, he can go to the higher court and not the National Assembly. Constitutionally, we are not supposed to be deliberating on this motion. It is premature to address this issue.” Bode Ayorinde from Ondo State and also an APC lawmaker concurred with Orker-Jev.

..It a shame that the NASS is even clamouring for someone to be moved abroad instead of using the same session to put pressure on the lazy govt to improve our health facilities so all Nigerian can have access to better health care .

I think it has now become more evident than ever that a key battleground for next year's elections is for the Legislative arm of government.
If it continues to be a "den" of robbers, then we will only see these kind of stunts, and wool being pulled over our eyes and we go hungry while the "fat cats" keep getting fatter.

I do not support stealing of any kind but what of if metu dies, are we going to eat his body? He have not been convicted so therefore he still have to be given a fair trial. Mr grass cutter visited efcc and went home on self recognition, likewise many others, why is metu's case different? Metu must be healthy to stand trial, and i don't want to believe that Apc is just doing it because of the way metu campaigned against them. ( But i blame metu because he chop the money alone, if he have shared with me i would have helped him. )
