Within the automotive industry, it’s common practice for companies to buy vehicles from competitors in order to reverse-engineer or benchmark them to learn precisely what they are up against.
But Mercedes-Benz reportedly used a particularly strange and arguably shady way to do it for the Tesla Model X.

Daimler rented the Model X for seven weeks in July and August from Sixt. The 100-kWh Model X belonged to Bavarian couple, who own three Teslas they put up for rent usually to wedding parties and other events directly as an additional source of income.

Shortly after handing over the keys of the Model X, Sixt received a notification on his phone that it was being charged near Barcelona in Spain ,much farther away than the rental agreement allowed. He then became suspicious and started tracking the car’s movements more often. 

Daimler completely dismantled and re-assembled the vehicle before returning a car with a warped tailgate and damaged paint, as well as trim torn from the front door. Other parts of the trim had been taped back together.

Onboard GPS systems showed that the car went on test tracks near Barcelona,Spain and at their test track in Sindelfingen ,near Stuttgart in Germany,another use prohibited by Sixt’s rental agreements.

It makes sense for the German automaker to be interested in the Model X at this point since it’s the only all-electric SUV on the market and Mercedes are about to launch their own all-electric SUV,the Mercedes EQC in 2019.

Daimler reportedly compensated the owners in part, but the couple is still demanding full payment for an estimated more than €15,000 ($17,772) in damage.

I still don't understand why Daimler can't simply buy one from Tesla. They didn’t have to ruin someone else’s Model X.

All i know is that the Mercedes EQC go sell pass Tesla model x when launched.

B4 US was able to launch a space craft into space, the CIA actually stole a Russia space ship dismantle it and reassembled it within 6 hours, and the Russians had no idea until recently US revealed what they did.

I don't see any reason for that, the tech behind every electric car is not a new one

Same way they tried to reverse engineer the Nissan GTR Nismo but failed woefully.

Make them send team go China for copy copy workshop training.

The world make it look like its wrong to copy, but the truth is China, Russia, Korea, Britain, USA, Germany e.t.c are all copying today.
When you spy on America, it is called espionage, when America spies on you it is called security.

This is teaching us something significant, the Americans care so much about their own people that their government send spies to steal technology for their country. The technology is used in creating jobs for their citizen.
The Chinese folks got a hold of the theft technique and they stole technology for the benefit of their nation, today all our electronic gadgets come from them. African youths are Jobless while Chines youths have jobs for themselves.
The Nigerian government don't understand the importance of technology in changing the face of this nation, but rather they use tribalism ethnicity to destroy the fabrics of our nation.
I hope a time will come when Nigeria will stop voting for dummies with no atom of intelligence.
I also hope a time will come when intelligent people will run the DSS, and critical state security outfit in the nation; not to be terrorising citizens, but to bring in technologies that will change this nation for good.
