If it's from your uncle, I believe it's just network locked. Does it recognise any SIM but network? If it's only locked on T-Mobile network, then, insert a SIM, connect to the internet via WiFi and launch the Device Unlock tool, select permanent unlock. That should do, else, you'll need to buy unlock code from sellers here or visit a good phone tech.

Have you tried what I asked you to do? If the phone is a gift from your uncle, I believe he must have unlocked it for you. Unlocking of T-Mobile devices is by code or Device Unlock app as said by Mark.l, don't play (too) smart, else, you'll render your phone permanently unusable. Google your model unlocking steps if you still don't understand.
