If during the day you need to always get materials of those who have passed through that similar course/handout and do the studying during long breaks when you have enough daytime to read.Next when back at school study during short intervals that you have and make sure you summarize as the summary would be used for studies before exams.Get the past questions of the lecturers and study it with friends.Lastly if this is what you can get from my post don't be depressed your result is not your definition its only a degree and you have 359 degrees in other areas of your life.pray more also.Shallom from a brother who passed through a similar path but came out victoriously.

Make friends with those who have been there.... Especially the guys but you must careful with them if you are a she cos majority of them will always want you to test your honey pot in return...
Attend classes and make comprehensive notes.
Start taking the front sit in your class.

Study every lecture note according to your own time table as if you have exams the next day...

not all brains accommodate reading pressure, so such person must try to meet up, read before others do.


try and inculcate the habits of mingling with reasonable intellectual fellas

2. Make sure you take your Continuous Assessment (CA) extremely serious more than your exams, if you can score 23-30 in your CA you have
less worries during Exams cos you will need only 40 outta 70 to be alright.
3. Make friends with the brilliant ones in the class or a year ahead and don't be shy to let them know your predicament.
4. Do all you can to make sure group or individual assignments are done properly.
5. Above all be prayerful, there's nothing God can't change.

PLS: Take No. 2 very serious.

Go and read ur books

You may want to try some of the following.

(1) Start reading for exams when the semester begins.N.B ,not when exams begin.

(2) Study past questions of at least 3/4 back,you will learn a lot,but most importantly you will notice a pattern,most Nigerian lecturers repeat questions.

(3) Have friends in your departments who are ahead of you(those that are academically sound) ask them questions about lectures,assigments and the lecturers pattern of teaching,what he expects from students in exams etc.

(3) Make friends with your level mates that are academically better than you are in your department,study with them.

(4) Do not rely on your notebooks alone,record your lectures,read relevant textbooks.

(5) Know what the lecturer wants from you in exams,does he like it simple and short?does he expects you to elaborate your answers?does he like 'la cram la pour'?Does he like when you answer from your own ideas.

(6) Lastly,read exam instructions very well before writing,understand the questions before answering,go through your answers(if you have time) before submitting your script.

My simple Advice: Ask if the lecturer was the same who took the course in previous years, if yes... go get past questions use it as your reading guide. answer past questions in a note for all your courses then read the answers along with new things the lecturer might say. This works every time especially in Nigeria public University.

You should find out if re lecturer takin your courses took the same course in previous session: If yes go get past questions. get genuine answers if possible get re scholars in your class to answer some for u. make a note with the answers then study those answers religiously. Nigerian lecturers hardly have time to set new questions they just modify that's if at all.

op understanding your lecturer's is very important know what they want and how do you read? personally i read like a mad man with my notepad to jot some key words,dictionary and internet access,when am reading a topic lets say democracy and i read that it is define by abraham lilcoin straight up i will google abrahim lilcoin to know him better same if i see any convoluted sentence i don't understant...and don't mingle with guys that you're better than them academically but rather does that you wish to be like them that will make you read more and go into some cold war with them cos the will ginger you..and don't read cos people are reading know thy self!

I see that you're not reading the right way.
In Nigerian schools, you have to be smart in your studies.
See what I think you should do:
For each course, make sure you attend all the lectures and do all the assessments or quiz. Then get the study materials (textbooks, handouts etc) for them.
Then when you study, make sure you understand every single detail in any particular course. Not just understanding them, be sure you can reproduce them almost exactly as they are in those materials. That might mean cramming; then by all means, cram them. Infact, I usually encourage Nigerian students to cram.
At the end of the day, what the lecturer will set as his questions would not be very different from what is in those study materials.
On the average, the difference between a First class student and others is just preparation - the level of preparation each put in - whether by cramming or not.

Finally, using the above methods, aim to make an 'A' in each course.

Get the course material u needed ...read ND summarize the material on a book, and the summary should be around ten pages or more depending on the handout or note...as u are reading it make sure you understand ND cram each page before jotin it down... make sure u repeat the same process until the summary book is exhausted..... this logic has been working for from 2.9 in 200l to a 4.0..in my final year...remember one 60leaves for each course....dem no born you well make u 4Get anything after learning this strategy and don't let out the past questions

My alma mater... graduated 2016 (comp sci). No sorting in Maths department. Is it Mrs Zanbuk, Mal. Allarama, Mal Ismail, Dr Gital, Mrs Maryam, Mal Aliyu Gombe.... u want to sort? U must b a joker then. U are lucky u didn't even meet lecturers like Mal Abu.. focus, determination and hard work is key. Just try to understand yourself and your reading pattern.. I'm a student of ATBU too.. on my 1yr IT (400l) I know it feels.. It's only you and you alone that can make a change

attend tutorials & discussion classes if available.also revise past questions after reading,it will help u knw how prepared u are.u can also meet with intelligents who have passed ur current level & find out how they made it.pray also,no need 2 get depressed cos when there is life there is hope.

First of all do you love your course?
If Yes then it is okay but if No, try as much as possible to love your course, cos if you don't love what you doing you may not find interest in it...

Secondly, have a timetable for reading, you don't need to wait for exam period before you start reading. By doing so, it will not be a difficult task doing exam period...

Thirdly, try to download, buy, lend materials for your course. Don't depend only on what your lecturers say or lecture...

Fourthly, if you have been reading alone and you find it hard to assimilate all at once..i suggest you join a group of friends(study friends)

Fifthly, try to use past questions to know how the questions are set and be prepared on how to answer them.

Last but not the least, understand your lecturers...

You obviously need to start early in the semester to study and try to understand at your own pace. Begin early to gather and revise past question papers, invest in textbooks recommended by the lecturer or you visit the library often if you do not have money for textbooks. Avoid distractions while studying and read everyday for at least 3hours daily at your convenient time of the day. Begin your reading early in the semester you will never regret. Then create time to play. Participate in a campus sport you enjoy most from time to time to loosen up. Make friends who desire or have improved cgpa. Goodluck.

I had about 2.5 at 200level.. But I still finished with a 2.1. You have to decide.. It wasn't easy but I did it..

Ask yourself why do I fail? You must start with a goal and plan how u intend to achieve it.
When you study.. Do you solve past questions.
Who are your friends... You need to start identifying with brilliant people. Learn from them.

Leave no stone unturned. Study well, practice and practice. And finally Pray . U can still make it. Calculate your GP and what you must attain each semester and work towards it.

2.1 nothing is impossible... ur department takes some courses with us. So I knw how it feels. Just study with ur past questions. That was a breakthrough point 4 me. And also relate well with the comp sci guys. Maths department in atbu is no play. Everyone knows that

In addition, look for the intelligent ones,form discussion group with them,most often tell them to answer questions from past question.

This is what always work for me:
Make a personal timetable that you can follow to study each day. Don't over load it with subjects you can't study each day.


Read every day, especially what you've been taught previously and move on to a new topic if you've exhausted your previous work.


Try to recall all you've read. Don't do this in your head, get a shit of paper or even a jotter and write as much as you can remember immediately after reading every day before you do other things.


If you can't recall any point, take a peek at your lesson note and try getting it into your head.


Make time for serious friends and ask each other random questions from any given topic in any subject.

If you can find practice questions at the end of your textbooks answer them when you are through with the topic.

Above all, pray. A friend once told me to read like I don't know how to pray and pray like I don't know how to read.

All the above have always worked for me, u can try them and see.

Please dnt read like u're under pressure, or dt u must understand wah u're reading instantly. Dnt read like u want to b better than others or in competition with someone. Read like u're the only student in that class, free your mind of being competitive. U can also have 1 or 2 reading mates. Ask questions, dnt feel like u know it all. And dnt always read, make a schedule, read, pray and play.
