From New York with Love
PART 1

Laila had just gotten out of a terrible relationship where her boyfriend showed her how tired he was of the relationship through rants and heavy blows. This was her second time of trying since Jason and she was already tired of loving. She vowed not to ever listen to Sandra on matters of the heart again as she was the one that talked her into accepting Adam’s proposal when she wasn’t sure what her heart was saying.
“Go girl, you so deserve this after all you’ve been through at the hands of that punk.” She remembered Sandra saying on the night Adam asked her to be his girlfriend.

She had already declined earlier but after having listened to Sandra, had said “Yes” the next time he asked. He used to be everything she asked for until recently. She didn’t know what had changed in the few months that she had known him before they started dating and now. She did her best to hang on to him because he was her joy, the reason she woke up every day, hands on phone and typing a “Good morning Hun” but now being with him felt like icy hell and she wanted out. Having already made up her mind, Laila picked up her phone and typed the liberating words. “I’m tired of living this façade. I’m Done” with quivering hands she tapped the send button and sealed the deal. That was the last she heard from him.

Years went by and Laila, still stuck to her “No more self-inflicted heartbreak” mantra secretly hoped for a little light, an adventure to sweep her of her feet. She had turned down all proposals and her course mates were beginning to attach reasons to her decision to stay away from ‘heartbreaks’ as that was the term she used when referring to guys. “She’s probably into females.” She heard someone whisper as she passed. She refused to be weighed down by the rumors they created. For all she cared they could go fall of some cliff or get swept away by some whirlwind. “Life is a lot more precious to spend it worrying over some guy your heart which is supposed to be pumping blood skips constantly for.” She would always tell Sandra who was beginning to worry a lot about her secluded life and her decision not to date again.

Laila devoted her time to learning to play the cello. She got so good that her friends advised her to consider going for competitions and seeing that it would help her get her mind off the lots of crap that have been creeping into her mind lately succumbed to their “You should so do this…” and “you were born for this…” She signed up and started preparing for the College Orchestra Battle. A competition hosted by Julliard a music school in New York which was held on every 14th of February. The competition had different instrumentalists from different colleges in one auditorium playing for a cash prize of 100,000USD and a scholarship to study music in Julliard. It was a big one but having been tutored by one of the best cellist in the country, she knew she stood a chance of carting away with her one of the top prizes. If only she knew the cupid package awaiting her...

PART 2
10th of February came and she was already on her way to New York with her tutor as her chaperone. It was the month of love, so with the Valentine’s Day celebration in view they gave each qualified participant a love story to tell with their instruments. Hers depicted all shades of hurt that came with love and she adjusted well to the lyrics which seemed to tell her story.

She would always visit the auditorium which was open for participants to rehearse at night when everywhere wasn’t crawling with fellow competitors. She loved her peace and quiet. Just like all other nights, Laila had retrieved the key to the auditorium from the shelf at the counter and had stealthily walked into the auditorium to avoid waking the security guy dozing at the entrance. She positioned herself on one of the chairs she deemed comfortable and in seconds was lost in the calming sensation that drifted from the strings of the cello. She didn’t notice him standing at the door and melting away in the soothing sounds she created. He watched as her fingers glided over the strings as if it was smooth glass. The way her body reacted to every crescendo was an alluring sight for him. He could see the lyrics got to her from the emotions he read off of her face. He was entranced. He let the music draw him in and by the time she was through, he was oohing and aahing and begging for more. She opened her eyes to acknowledge who it was she had performed for and was struck with awe at how handsome he was. In split seconds, he was standing in front of her and extending his hand for a handshake while introducing himself as Ryan Morris, Instrument Teaching assistant and eulogizing her for a wonderful performance. She smiled as she introduced herself as Laila Smith. They got talking and seemed to bond so fast and that was her cue to leave. She quickly excused herself with a cliché excuse of having to wake up early for her morning jog the next day and walked off into the night while ignoring Ryan’s pleas to stay a little longer.

Laila got back to her room, tossed her shoes aside and hopped into her bed. Closing her eyes, she let her mind drift to Ryan. She pictured Ryan’s face, his blue eyes that looked like a whirlpool, one she hoped would let her drown in its ambience someday. His auburn hair that cascaded across his left eye, His lips that curved up in a beautiful smile every time something caught his fancy, begging to be kissed. His hands, oh his hands that had palms as soft as that of a newborn. She let herself imagine what it would feel like to have those hands caress her skin and she shuddered. She tossed and turned until her thoughts faded into dreams filled with beds dressed with carnations and she, wrapped in Ryan’s arms…
