The official language of Quebec is French. It is the SOLE official language. You cannot insist on speaking English to conduct business in an enclave where the official language is not English.

English is the official language in Nigeria. In every single nook and cranny of Nigeria. Yet this law seemingly seeks to make it legit to conduct business and teach in yoruba, even to the exclusion of other non-Yoruba speakers.
You did not make noise like this when Anambra and Imo made it compulsory for all students to learn Igbo, in their state owned institutions.

Why are you so scared of claiming your great-grandfather's state of origin, that you want to die over Lagos? cheesy Na question I just dey ask, o! I have lived in Lagos for several years, but I have never ever had the urge to claim Lagos....and I get along really well with my Yoruba friends in the city.

Bros relax, I was trying to prove a point to those guys. I don't live in Lagos, I have spent no more than 6 months in Lagos my entire life.

Guy, we were discussing the difference between federalism and disintegration, not the definition of federal law or if it was supreme, or not.

I replied to this statement;
LaudableXX:

As for the law passed by Lagos, it can only be abrogated by a court judgement, or repealed, suspended or modified by another law passed by the same Lagos state house of assembly.

Just listen to yourself. undecided Lagos state is firmly within Yoruba land, and you are here saying that Yorubas influence things, because they are in the majority. Na who for do am, before?

So who do you expect to influence things within a state that is firmly located in Yoruba land? Is it the Tivs or the Kanuris? shocked are you praying for those Yoruba people to become a minority within Lagos state? Which kind drink no gree make your eye clear, like dis?

Majority will always carry the vote, last year a total of seven Nigerians were elected into the UK parliament. They were elected by their constituencies where black are majority. If the present influx of other tribes continue, in the not so distant future the Yorubas will be outnumbered within Lagos, what do you think will happen then? Again, I don't care, just proving a point.

let me use another analogy, our local football coaches don't get the much desired result, what do we do? employ FOREIGN handlers, assisted by Nigerians. it's called stooping to conquer.

Jeez, you said and i quote "law passed by Lagos, it can only be abrogated by a court judgement, or repealed, suspended or modified by another law passed by the same Lagos state house of assembly." This statement is false because federal law supersedes state law.

At least that a first step, we should all encourage it then find other alternatives.

For the umpteenth time, there are hundreds of ethnic languages in Nigeria. Making English the official language is a common denominator.

'indoctrinated' is being disingenuous.

What do you mean by they don't have such laws in the South east? After a screenshot was posted to prove it, and ODVanguard also cited links to support the fact that Igbo is compulsory in Anambra and Imo primary and secondary schools? In fact, a failure in Igbo language course, means the student will not be promoted to the next class the following year!
The law isn't the same with the ones passed in Lagos. Lagos's case include tertiary institutions, public places including radio houses owned by the state.

Given these examples, why can't engineering be taught in Yoruba on YORUBALAND?

God bless you brother. Personally, I would like to see a policy that encourages schools to teach in our native languages. I'm positive it would lead to developing Nigeria faster.

The law does not affect federal-owned tertiary institutions only state owned institution like Laspotech, Lasu and other mediocre state institutions which none of my relative can ever attend. Anambra also has a similar "Subakwa Igbo" law.

Mynd44:
Tetiary institutions in Lagos

This is vague. Does the law mean all tetiary institutions in Lagos which includes Yabatech and UNILAG and other private institutions or Lagos state owned ones only?

Can this law be held in federal secondary schools like Kings and Queens college?

It can not hold water in Federal institutions like Unilag, Yabatach and co. They are not under the purview of state government and cannot be sanctioned by the state government lasu and laspotech. Anambra also has a similar law. Much ado about nothing.

"He said anyone seeking admission into the Lagos State University, Lagos State Polytechnic, Michael Otedola College of Primary Education, Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education, Lagos State School of Nursing and Lagos State College of Health Technology, among others must have credit in Yoruba language."

I think going by the above quoted, it applies to only state owned institutions. But it obviously going to have a resonant effect on others as well.

The first paragraph is correct but your second paragraph I don't agree. Federal universities do not follow state government footsteps and private university need their money and won't adopt language discriminatory policies that will potentially adversely affect the depth of their pockets.

And tertiary state-owned institutions in the SE who made Igbo part of the compulsory General Studies courses at 100-level, what do you call them? I didn't hear people from different tribes complaining when that was done in Anambra and Imo, o! shocked

Don't be silly. By citing the fact that Anambra and Imo did something similar, did I in any way allude to the fact that you must be from the SE? Where exactly did I say you were from the SE? I used those examples, because they were the ones that were well documented. I tried to check the criteria for Kaduna and Kano state-owned tertiary institutions online, but couldn't get the details or else I would have included it, too!

Go back to school biko, and stop getting worked up over nothing. Your parents obviously did not send you to school to get all defensive over a law using an indigenous language, as a harmless criteria for admission, .

You keep arguing a clueless point. undecided The fact that those 7 Black politicians were elected into parliament, does NOT mean that black people were in the majority in the UK. It just means the politicians articulated their programmes and campaigns well-enough, to attract people who cut across all races, to vote for them. Or did you hear that only black people voted for those black politicians in the UK?? shocked
