Layman's economic analysis! Exchange rate (which is the price at which two or more currencies exchange for each other), just like the price of any other commodity, is purely a matter of demand and supply. That's all I can say for now. |

Samleen:The naira is valuable enough to discontinue the use of the 500 and 1000 naira notes. Discontinuing then would be stupid, it should be the other way round - increasing the value of the naira until the notes are not needed anymore. The reason the €500 is being discontinued is because no one, I mean no one uses it because it value is too high. I applaud the direction of thought but it just shows how little u understand about monetary policy |

Samleen:The most important factor isn't so much about reduction of currency denomination but rather level of production vis a vis imports and exports. |

Nigeria must be better by fire by thunder it was introduced by Charles C. Soludo in 2006, but the greedy elites was against it because of their selfish gains they think Nigeria belong to only them most of them are importers we really need to be an exporting nation and and reduce our denominations because of inflations God will put every enemies of Nigeria into shame |

Those selfish law makers will kick against the implementation but they fail to realize that some day they will be out of power and become like the common man then these policies they rejected will hit them hard. |

Samleen:Value of currency doesn’t equal a strong economy. The Japanese and the Chinese deliberately devalue their currency against the dollar so that their exports are cheaper and more competitive for other countries to buy. That’s why when their currencies become strong they actually increase circulation to decrease the value of their currency. Btw the Chinese economy is second only to the us and the Japanese third. The basic thruth is we need to up our exports. |

Samleen:It is the the real aspect(economic aspect) that I consider irrational. Making a nations currency equal to another is pretty easy to do(re-denomination, revaluation etc) within a very short time-frame, however, it will at best have no impact or at worse negative impact(wasted resources) on the countries development. When you equate 1 Naira to 1 Dollar through the approach you proposed, you are essentially destroying the Naira as we have it and creating a new Naira whose value is not the same as the one you currently hold. In short, minimum wage will no longer be 18k because it will be insane and even impossible for the government to pay a low level worker: $18000. So to pay a worker, you will divide the new Naira value by the current exchange rate 18000/360, i.e #50 as the minimum wage. At the end of the day, nothing has changed. |

PietraK:Would cashless policy erase current denominations or completely erase handling of cash?Would it also stop you from buying commodities at their price tags?Cashless policy can only reduce money laundering ,reduce cost of printing naira notes and ease cash movement or transfer. |

Cromagnon:People are farming... The government just needs to support them with infrastructures and create cheaper means for the chemicals they use.. Almost all the households in benue owns a farm, and benue isn't even the largest farming area in the North yet.. There's Ebonyi coming up too in the east.. But over the years, there has been a rapid increase in the prices of farm things(like every other thing in the country).. In summary, people are farming.. |

@OP I love your point but it won't work out now. First thing first. The Economy will play the important role in other to make the naira strong against the dollar.. Let's use ur calculation for example; if #1000, #500, #200 is removed now from our denomination and Intodruce lower denomination like 20kobo, 50kobo and 100kobo . Will it change anything ? The ans is No In No ; it won't because the price of goods and services still remain same. A sachet of water cost #10 and it will still be 10naira even if all those higher value currency is removed . What will start happening then is that ppl will start moving bulk notes up and down and CBN will start printing more lower denomination to meet the population of demand for lower notes. What we need is good economy that will help us export more than import to strengthen our naira.. Like a guy said on the first page. Assuming we ha e working Refinery : for vehicles to buy fuel cheaper , Power : for manufacturing and producing company not to spend much . All things been equal everything will be cheap. When that happens the higher denomination will be obsolete and of no use to carry around, the CBN can now remove it easily without printing more smaller notes to meet up economy.. |

Samleen:Samleen, people have been raising salient points since the existence of Nigeria but implementation is a problem. The issue is with all of us. If we can tell our family members, acquaintances, neighbours that what we are doing is not good, then we are good to go. How many people still go to farms for produce? Fast food, instant milk and you think importation will stop? When was the last time you ate indigenous apple? A lot of questions and soul-searching needs to be done. We are over reliant on importation. The list of solutions to our problems exists and endless but are we ready to implement? |

We should focus on exporting goods and services more than import. This will help our economy to grow... |

we can copy the asian tigers, they had worse economy, like ours but adopted a system that has been able to rank them among worlds stable economy now, but i seriously think we lack will power, i mean power to do. Nigerian are naturally psychologically lazy. We don't want to think to solve our own problems. |
