Op you are so very much on point.I wanted to write something similar to this and post on my Facebook wall, but I guess I will just copy and paste *smiles*. Back to the topic on ground: When you go to Libya, their highest currency is 50 Dinars and they use coins.Though their economy is a mess right now but I think it's due to the fact that the country has been without a president for the past 6-7 years now.During the time of Gaddafi 1 dollar was equal 1 dinar. Go to Niger they have 10,000 cefar note, with that I believe you know how the country is. Nigeria government should just discontinue using the 1000,500 and 200 naira notes and just stick to the 100,50,20 and 10 naira, and the use of coins should be reestablished. To even think that the former government wanted to print a 5000 naira note,God! Nigeria would have been in a deeper shithole than this current one had the past government succeeded. BTW: I was wondering how much the snake would have successfully swallowed... Billions!!! |

Samleen:Bros, you really tried with your write up and I was relaxed when I saw that Caveat emptor...that guy you quoted and some other guys up there have said it all...if you read their write up carefully , you'll realise they were speaking from the position of undertanding rather than the position of 'mere observation'....you need to understand the difference between the 'face value'and 'purchasing value' of a currency....... In as much as what you wrote as solution will improve the naira it won't have any significant impovement as you thought, until this fundamental factors mentioned by some writers up there are done. You should also note thatthe biggest monetary corruption happening in Nigeria is largely "electronic" ...the days of "Ghana must go" is gradually phasing out. so no matter the size of the money to be shared, your denominations will be of no effect. |

Samleen:You are making one very basic mistake. You have gotten the direction of causality wrong. When our currency gets damaged like it is right now govt will print large value currency. Government prints large current notes because the purchasing power of the currency has fallen, it is not the printing of large value money that brings the value of the currency down. once you understand this point you will have realised that you have no point. The point you raised is not even a factor that affects the value of money. Some posters above knowledge of economics have come up with good points, you should consider them. |

Mhyketh:i love your last paragraph. the only thing we know how to do is to pray against our problems. imagine if young vibrant Nigerians have a platform to carryout a convention occasionally to discuss problems like this, am sure alot of solutions would have been generated but again the dinosaurs in power wouldn't have known how to implement it. i drop my pen here. |

Op. I know you have good intentions but economy doesn't work that way bro. Just removing higher denominations from the market would not solve Nigeria;s economic problem. If that is done the broad gains would be political, not economical. Moreover, the N500 and N1000 note is not high value. It's worth just $1.39 $2.77 respectively, it's used by just about everyone. Removing it from circulation will devastate millions of workers paid in cash. It will imperiled countless small Nigerian businesses that conduct transactions in hard currency. |
