National Universities Commission (NUC) has granted Maritime University, Okerenkoko, Delta State, the go-ahead to commence graduate degree programmes beginning from the 2017/2018 academic session, and admit JAMB candidates.

The NUC approved three faculties for the University; namely Faculty of Marine Transport with four departments including Nautical Science and other departments like Transport, Logistics; the third one, Marine Economics and Finance, and lastly, Port Management. Then, Faculty of Engineering; where they have Marine Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Petroleum and Gas. Finally, the Faculty of Environmental Management; where they have Environmental Management and Pollution Control, Meteorology and Climate Change, Fisheries and Marine Geology.

A statement by the media aide to the vice president Laolu Akande says the gesture was in line with the Buhari administration’s new vision to develop the Niger Delta region and the Maritime University will be extended all privileges accorded to other Federal Universities.

We have PTI, only Petroleum institute in Nigeria, we have FUPRE, and now this..Not to mention our state uni and also Several polytechnics scattered all over the state . Don't act like the state is educationally backward.

When will the Authority of this Federal Marine University set up a website portal for the interest of the viewing public?

Is setting up a website portal that expensive?

Is setting up a website portal involves so much of a ROCKET SCIENCE?

When will the Authority of this Federal Marine University start the recruitment of NON ACADEMIC STAFF?

They have recruited for Lecturers or Academic Staff but nothing is being heard about the Non Academic Staff?

Does it not make sense if the federal government try to link this university by road to Warri or the closest town so that vehicle can reach there by road instead of speed boat?

Besides, the oil money that is being used to run the federal, state and local government budget in Nigeria comes from oil producing community such as this Okerenkoko which is the host town to the federal marine university.

FUPRE is the 1st of its kind in Nigeria and Africa.

What about the many private universities scattered over the state?
Novena, Western Delta, MCIU, Edwin Clark, Admiralty, etc.

While it will be rendered redundant, I don't think it has been grounded. Both institutions have separate mandates. One produces mid-level skilled graduates, the other produces top-level skilled graduates. So there's no clash of interest. One is like a polytechnic, the other is a university. Entrance and graduation requirements won't be the same.
