Anambra To Begin Exportation Of Rice by naijagro: 12:55am On Mar 01, 2018
Anambra State Government says it has concluded plans to begin the exportation of rice once it increases the state’s rice production capacity from the current 345,000 metric tonnes to 600,000 metric tonnes this year.
This followed the introduction of new irrigation technology for rice production in the eight Local Government Areas that produce the commodity in large quantities.
Governor Willie Obiano stated this at the inspection of the multi-million Naira Center Pivot Irrigation System in Ogbaru Local Government Area. He said that the introduction of new irrigation system in four locations was to facilitate all-year round rice production, as well as empower 2,500 farmers across the state.
He revealed that the Central Bank of Nigeria would provide funds to the state government to enable it off-take paddy produced in the state for onward sale to millers to forestall lack of markets for the produce.
Obiano pledged his government’s commitment towards the training of young farmers in modern agriculture.
The governor said that under the FADAMA III Additional Financing, sorghum would be added to the crops chosen for cultivation adding that the Onitsha –based Sabmiller Breweries had indicated interest in buying sorghum from the project.
Anambra State Coordinator of FADAMA III Additional Financing, Mr Chukwuka Egbueh stated that 11 rural roads leading to the rice production belts in the state were under construction, to boost rice production in the state. He noted that 18 youth and women groups had been provided with rice mills, tricycles, threshers and de-stoners to facilitate their production.
Egbueh added that FADAMA had constructed drying slabs in five locations: Umumbo, Ogbaru, Amanuke and Ifite Ogwari to hasten the drying of rice.
