Someone posted this on LinkedIn:

How long until your ‘degree class’ becomes unimportant?

“It is no longer important to include your ‘degree class’ in your CV after many years of graduation from the university. If you graduate in 2008 (which is 10 years ago!), a prospective employer wouldn’t take you seriously when you emphasize on your CV that you made an Upper Second Class honors degree 10 or 15 years ago. After 10 or 15 years of graduation potential employers are more interested in what you did with your degree in the 10 or 15 years after graduation more than they would care about the class of your degree.

“Of course you can find a space somewhere between ‘education’ and ‘interests and extra-curricular activities’ where you can indicate that you were the best graduating student in your university class, in those days. That might even interest the prospective employer more than your degree class would. But at any rate, after 10 or 15 years of graduation, what you did with your degree since graduation is more important to the prospective employer (and to the society too!) than the ‘weight’ of that same degree when you received it.”

We agree with him. It’s actually not rocket science. Your experience over 10 years trumps any education you had in 4 years. However, it may still be a tie breaker. When all candidates perform equally or have almost same strengths, the employer may decide to pick one with better academic background, if only to boast that “First Class works for me” or to love-vendor up their corporate profile on their website etc. Something like “Richard John is our Head of Strategy. He is a First Class graduate of Political Science from…”

This is however largely applicable to Nigerian labour market. It may not at all in many countries, especially in the West. However, school attended (even for just first degree) continues to have value in many countries, especially the US and UK. If you attended an Ivy League university 30 years ago, it will forever continue to be to your advantage. It can be a decider in position today. Interestingly, unlike grade, the reverse of this is the case in Nigeria. After 5 years experience, employers hardly care about your school’s prestige again. When considering an external candidate for Senior Manager in say NNPC, it may not matter whether he attended Ahmadu Bello University or Ado Ekiti Polytechnic, but it may matter whether an external candidate went to Stanford or UNILAG when being considered for a Manager role in Microsoft

when i was working in the bank, my manager never went to university but he was earning more than us. The difference was that he had over 30 years experience in the bank as a head security man, he settled numerous disputes and even uncovered various high profile frauds. Unfortunately he was sacked when the bank changed name.

Well, my degree class has never been interesting to my employers but my education, skills and enthusiasm.

There are countries that have done away with the class system. You get your degree with your scores in individual courses but no final grades.
The aim of the system is to reduce discrimination based on final grades. It works for them but we are not yet there.

Well, the emphasis has always been on skills than degree class. If i would employ someone in my business. I would only check & ask "what can you do to increase my income. Not what have you graduated with"

True, it makes sense.
BTW I believe that what a company sees in a first class graduate is somebody who is committed to reaching a goal which he/she has set, not necessarily brilliance.
A company values one who is committed and that commitment is assumed through your grades. If there's a way you can prove that you can be focused and committed even with a low grade, I believe you'll be alright. This is just a thought, unrelated to the topic.

What does it profit to graduate with good grade and not able to defend it or make something out of it

To escape criticism get a good grade.
To be self reliant get a skill.
To have peace of mind, be contented with what you have.
Success is all about being in the right place at the right time with the right persons.
Education does not guarantee success, don't get pushed down by it.

To be honest, be it fresh graduate or old graduate ,I have come to realize one thing....there are tons of things that you don't learn from school but you get it from experience or passion....I don't even bother about degree when recruiting or advising for recruitment

What I ask is simple

What are you bringing to your table.....

With these wishy washy certificates ....I have realised that those that perform better in work are those with even low degrees and mind you

Your degree doesn't make you decree in work place

Experience and passion counts today

I don't believe that....5 yrs...they can start as salesmen and climb up. I started as insurance salesman on commission and then I scaled up to other jobs based on experience...today I run my own CAC registered firm by the grace of God

So there are jobs just that people don't want to do it

I met a lady on nairaland that has no work experience for 4years and counting, so it's possible

They could start small, I agree. But let's say the person studied Geology, and couldn't lay his hands on a job for a year plus. And then he decided to be an insurance salesman for some years.

If peradventure he gets the opportunity to work in his field, are you suggesting he puts his salesman experience in his cv?

I'm just asking

Some recruiters don't take people serious when they see that you have spent some years outside your area of expertise.

Or don't you think so?

Only matters for entry level (Graduate Trainees), the damn thing was never in my cv anyway (yea...you guessed right, it was 2'2).

Once you started your first job and have more than 24 months experience, the thing has expired. What matters henceforth is your subsequent skills, certifications and achievement.

Personally, I would proudly bold the fact that I have a PRINCE2 certification 1 year ago than that I have a degree. Infact, educational qualification is second to last thing in my cv, just before the hobby and references.

And some recruiters also don't take people serious when you have been idle for over 4 yrs without any form of adding values .....that's it bro

Well, it isn't up for debate ! I just said my own, one have the ability bro either wait for a dream job doing nothing or so something while the dream job comes to play

People don't make money from their certificates but their passion and ingenuity

Well, I think it would be nice to keep it private but it is in the area of IT , cloud computing and motion sensors....though at the nascent stage....worked for 8yrs and decided that I am done working for people...been a founder at 30s wouldn't be a bad idea.....took it up bro

So that's the way .....we give God the glory
