is Finland and Germany a multiethnic and multicultural countries like Nigeria? i begin to ask is this law really necessary or what we need now? though its a welcome development, other states especially those from the north will see it as a threat to their dominance and impose thier Arabic thing on us....let's not create another problem with this language preservation law thing. ..boko haram, herdsmen, fuel scarcity, etc are enough problems confronting this nation which is still to be solve, now comes the Yoruba language....ok o

Oga, north have already imposed their dominance on us. Check the Nigerian constitution and the military logo

Yoruba are beginning to behave more archaic than the north, what will national anthem in Yoruba do for them, will it make tinubu teeth more yellow?they can also translate the coat of arm to yoruba language, how tinubu boys look at me

Now that Yoruba are beginning to behave more archaic than the north, don't you think you and your entire family should pack yourself out of Yoruba land and move to the north or your natural habitat, the gully eroded region? The earlier you do that the better. You won't be missed, believe me.

It's good for the promotion of the Yoruba culture but the cons are much more than the pros.

This would only bring about segregation is schools, the compliant schools would go lower in scale due to mass withdrawal of pupils who may feel marginalized and opt for better school who give a leveled atmosphere..

You don't expect green spring school to adopt this initiative, the best they can do is to make it optional. You don't expect a parent who coughs up minimum N1m/term to allow his kids be taught physics in Yoruba even if he/she is Yoruba.

Especially not a Nation with over 360 languages...

This is a welcome development in all our primary, secondary and higher institutions. We must remind them Lagos might be a Nigerian city but it is still Yoruba land.

Same thing, government policies should never be optional

Where are they mass exiting to anyway? Is the law not across the board, public and private?

Deomelllo, in as much this would promote cohesion, but what kind of cohesion is it providing?

I think this law may conflict with the Nigerian Human rights law, not sure though.

Obviously you and I know top schools would not adopt this, it's majorly for public schools. When some top schools only allow equal brand of provisions just to take away envy, jealousy, inferior complex from their pupils thereby creating equal learning atmosphere.

Top schools make provisions for their pupils to school abroad immediately after secondary, and even go on excursions abroad, of what use is a chemistry/geography or computer lesson in yoruba to that pupil?

Meanwhile in the public schools, This would bring about -marginalization amongst schools/peers
-Cultism amongst students.
-Segregations among pupils and teachers.
-Unnecessary clicks that may lead to mayhem just like it is already on this thread.

The use of Yoruba to teach subjects is a test to see if it will help students understand it better not a drastic change in policy, surely you don't expect everyone to be taught in Native languages. And even if it works, it won't be change anything, students who assimilate faster in Yoruba can as well go learn it.

English is Nigeria's official language but if our next nuclear physicists have to be trained in Igala for them to understand and use it to grow the nation, it is a win for Nigeria

There are 4 official Languages in Nigeria recognized by the constitution. Hence you cannot force anyone to speak any particular one of them, no matter how hard you try.

If not we would all be speaking Hausa by now.
Ambodes Law is not implementable: as Ajibota schools only need to challenge it in court on two grounds.

1. He cannot be re-appointing official languages, the constitution already did, and supercedes any state law.

2. You can only implement the law on mother tongue grounds for people to whom its their mother tongue.

One court case in Abuja, one maintain statusquo ruling, end of agenda.

Mynd44, I know you were making an example with the nuclear physics and igala yeah, but in that same line, how would the next nuclear physicist be properly trained to world recognition when the books which should train him best, the words and Dynamics are in English?

Can we define equilibrium or thermodynamic in ibibio or kanuri?

In essence it may be great for our culture but detrimental on a wider scale and it's insistence most in public school would widen that academical gap already between the private and public schools

In every subject, the elementaries are the most important, as long as you are able to get the foundation, you can progress.

Now, you are not totally stopping students from learning English, they will learn English according to WAEC syllabus meaning the knowledge is there.

So assuming xyz is oxygen in Yoruba, you see a chemistry textbook, you will easily be able to make the switch.

Plus, dont you think the local blacksmith apprentice who can read a Yoruba Bible will do better with a Yoruba chemistry textbook than English?

Ask yourself, how many textbooks on nuclear physics exist in Spanish or Portuguese? Are there people of spanish or Portuguese origin who are nuclear scientists? Didn't they also start with their local language and along the way, moved to English or whatever language they learnt the complex courses in?

Actually, 5 official Languages. French is also included.

That said,
An educational policy that says recite National Anthem in Yoruba is not completely outlawing the Englush recitation, it means, recite the English and then recite the Yoruba. Eash state has a right of chosing its own educational code for secondary school and primary schools.

2. You go to court to tell the court you dont want to recite the anthem then what? Yoruba is also an official language and the law simply says you should also use that official language as it is part of the culture of the land. Schools in Ogun state recite the state's anthem in Yoruba

Take California for example, every document including government has spanish translations and it is mandated for schools to teach spanish
