WHETHER IGBO SING YORUBA OR SPEND ONE DAY LEARNING YORUBA WILL NEVER MAKE THEM YORUBA.

HOWEVER WAT IT WILL DO FOR THEM IS OPEN MORE OPPORTUNITIES IN SOUTHWEST REGION AND THEY WILL SPREAD FURTHER TO YORUBA VILLAGES.

A GOOD IDEA IN THE SHORT TERM, MIGHT TURN OUT TO BE A BAD IDEA IN THE LONG RUN.

Mynd44, I know you were making an example with the nuclear physics and igala yeah, but in that same line, how would the next nuclear physicist be properly trained to world recognition when the books which should train him best, the words and Dynamics are in English?

Can we define equilibrium or thermodynamic in ibibio or kanuri?

In essence it may be great for our culture but detrimental on a wider scale and it's insistence most in public school would widen that academical gap already between the private and public schools
That uneducated man who is a roadside mechanic or technician learned those skills through his mother tongue. That is why he is far better than a graduate of engineering in Nigeria, in terms of skills and competence.

What is Ambode trying to do here? Inflame ethnic tensions? Doesn't he know that Lagos is a multi-ethnic state with large populations of other tribes.

What he could have done or said was to pass a law ensuring that the Yoruba language is a course on the school's curriculum so that those who want to retain their language and culture can take the class. Don't infringe on every pupil's rights by making them sing the National Anthem in Yoruba. The Anthem is what binds us together as a nation and should always be sang in English, our national language. Stop inflaming ethnic tensions.
Lagos multi ethnic state? How? The main ethnic group that preoccupied Lagos from d time of immemorial are the Yorubas. Igbo's doesn't belong to Lagos. Lagos is not home to any Igbo person, y'all are migrants and are completely strangers there. Yoruba accommodated you people but you have made us regret our benevolences.
Igbo doesn't have any right above the Yorubas in Lagos.

They have them in China Russia in France and they do not speak English

Isaac Newton wrote His acclaimed volume Principia. in Latin 400 years ago. Then Latin Greek and French were the languge of instruction and the elite in Europe
Where is Latin today?
You will find Greek in nathematics textbooks

English borrowed so much from Latin
There is no guarantee that it will last for ever.

Thermo and dynamic

are of Greek and French origin respectively
English did not come from the sky

All men first belong to one tribe and race of man before having their different tribes. Once you change your full name then you become Yoruba.

That was Professor Fafunwa's policy when he was minister of education in the 1980s, but there was enormous opposition to the policy and the opponents practically killed it.

His policy was that kids should be taught in their mother tongue until they got to primary 3. The compromise that was reached was that every child must learn at least one Nigerian language.
S

Not practical. We speak about 500 languages in Nigeria. Teaching every child in his/her mother tongue mean the following
1) You need more classrooms. Especially in cities. In some schools, you will need up to 10 classes per level
2) You need more teachers to teach the classes. You may need 10 arithmetic teachers
3) You need textbooks in each language
4) Other issues. Like, What language do you use to teach foreigners?

1-3 = More investment, jobs, opportunities, etc.

4 = The official foreign languages in Nigeria, English and French. Note that, as part of the compromise, kids are taught at least one Nigerian language and one foreign language (usually English and French) and some states have introduced additional languages, eg, Lagos State's introduction of Chinese.

Every policy has its pros and cons. Research has been done by lots of international bodies, including UNESCO, which show that children learn better in their mother tongue and there are enough people in Nigeria who want to preserve their indigenous languages and who are ready to give it a go. Many state governments in Nigeria are willing to implement this policy and they will do it, especially when you consider what I wrote in 1-3 above - more textbooks, more employment, more investment and more opportunities for politicians to award contracts.

Not workable. Imagine having 200 pupils in Primary 1 and you have 70 different mother tongues? Where will you get the lands in cities to build schools? How will the schools be managed? Is it efficient to have teachers teach 5 pupils? Or even 1? Where will you find the teachers? It is because there are not enough teachers that Youth Corpers are being used to teach. Imagine the efforts required to translate each approved textbooks into 500 different language? Also this will also limit interactions between pupils and students if different ethnic groups since time spent in class will be spent with only there fellow students from same ethnic group. It would have been different if we all speak same language like others (Russians, German, Italian, etc) who speak same language

You are very wrong with this view.
Growing up somewhere outside your native land has great impacts on you.

Go and observe that Igbos who grew up in Onitsha and Igbos who grew up in Lagos or in the north do not behave the same way at all. They behave very differently.

I am from the north-central and I have observed this very very well. Igbos who grew up in Jos where I am from are very different from those that came from the east.

I am from Jos but I grew up in Warri and I can tell you that I am very different from most of my people in the way we act, think and almost everything else.

It is not as easy as you think bro.

The non yorubas will definitely integrate into yoruba culture, this will make the yoruba nation more populous.

Go to Kano and see, majority of the hausa speaking muslims you see in Kano are not from Kano state, many of them are not even Hausas by tribe! Many of them are Nupes, Kanuris, Shuwa, Baburr, Fulanis, Gwaris, Ebira, Igala, Auchi and even yoruba muslims. Yes! There are yoruba muslims who have integrated into Hausa culture and identity in Kano state!

The policies were not meant for every language in Nigeria. It was more or less for the 3 major languages and perhaps other larger regional languages.
