Some things happened before the pogrom. The killings of the leaders from the north and south west by soldiers of Eastern origin and sparing of lives of the leaders from the eastern region.
Two, the taunting that followed the killings of northern leaders and the failure to punish the coup plotters and killers.
The counter coup which led to the brutal death of then Igbo head of state and other top Igbo military officers was enough reprisal, the pogrom was uncalled for and with what is happening in Nigeria today, can't u see that it wasn't the 1966 Igbo led coup that really led to the pogrom but Hausa-Fulani love for violence and bloodletting of innocent people at slightest provocation

Benue, Taraba, Southern Kaduna, etc killings are examples of their love for bloodletting for no justifiable reason.

Read the truth from my previous post. No revisionist will tell you the truth.

Banjo and Ifeajuna cut a deal with the federals to go back and kill Ojukwu in exchange for safety. Instead of progessing to lagos which they had all means, they took the easy way out, and turn back. There was little or no resistance at Ore as against the lies peddled by the revisionists and anti-historian scoundrels. If there was, Banjo or Ifeajuna would have died fighting. Soldiers of those days (especially Biafrans) fight to the last man. That was the principle. Nzeogwu himself died fighting in Biafraland.

They simple cut a deal with Gowon and awolowo to kill Ojukwu and bring his head but it backfired and they had to pay with their lives. If Achuzie had led that troop, Lagos would have fallen within few days.

Throughout the course of the war. Patriots like Achuzie never retreated in battle, you cut him in he cuts you out. Always ready for ambush.

Will u stop lying to yourself?

Biafrans fight Till the last Man? Really? Like Ojukwu did? Was that before or after fleeing in Woman attire?

Nzeogwu died fighting, where? He was even trying to cross over or even cut a deal...

"At this point, the accounts diverge. Olu Mamdap (former military driver to General Domkat Bali) witnessed the incident and claims that Nzeogwu and the other “two or three” occupants in the vehicle were killed while still inside the vehicle. Mamdap claims that it was not known that Nzeogwu was inside until the corpses were dragged out.

However Major-Generals Mohammed Shuwa and Abdullahi Shelleng (who were not present when Nzeogwu was killed but saw his corpse) claimed that while being fired on, Nzeogwu jumped out from the vehicle, shouted in Hausa and identified himself as Major Nzeogwu but was shot dead anyway."

You think in your wildest dream Biafra army will take Lagos? Even the couple plotters failed in Lagos....

Will u shut up dia!!!! Fight who, and who, ?

Most part of Nigeria only heard of the war on radio, Just d sight of Few Fulani herdsmen, or d sound of a busted tire, you run, with ur heel hitting the back of your head....

The same greediness exhibited by your forefathers will continue to haunt you.... After occupying sensitivitve positions, even in the North, yet you want more, making you to come up with that selective coup...

Other tribes are wiser now, sit your lazy a**es down there looking for unholy alliances or for the Presidency to be handed over to you like a plate of abasha....
You are a kid, go and read your history book. The only tribe the north fear in the whole Nigeria is Igbo and its because they know what they did and what they can still do, its not about throwing insults online, when worst comes to worst, u will know who the Igbo tribe is.

Forget the killing of unarmed vulnerable IPOB members by well armed Nigerian military, declare war and watch how it will end. I think the government need to re-introduce history back to our schools.

The Clash at Ore was well documented..... Pls go, and read more.... Ija órè, Óre leku ....

Don't mind him. history is important and history is for the open hearted not some emotional dimwits.

We keeping saying we want youth to take over governance and I say I want youth with sense of history of politics of different climes and their immediate environment not all this ignorant student of history parading as youth
.

how can anybody with inkling of history say there was no resistance at the battle ore its akin to saying British never colonized Nigeria.

You see, some of my research of medieval Europe and some of movies that portrayed that time shows kings start preparing there next in line for governance by appointing a history teacher on war and politics , and event of war and politics that happened in other countries. examples I can think of his the Rome days. how octavious ceaser was appointed history teachers by Julius ceaser.

Note: the generation of those that led us to this abyss of government were youth( young military officers of their 20s the oldest was in his mid 30s by leading needless coups )

If only you know.... The problem with your lots is that your fore fathers were not proud enough to tell you the truth of how much they failed.

Now read the Op all over again... Incase you can't, let me help you with few points.

Maj Banjo was never left to himself... He was always with his companion Biafran soldiers, one of which is Ifeajuna.

The biggest victory on the Biafran side was that of Benin conquest. Banjo won it... I won't know if Ojukwu was not comfortable with his exploits though.

Banjo fought for Biafra to stand.. As at when he won Benin he believed Biafra could stand and guard the lands won and rule over that as the Republic of Biafra. He didn't believe in matching over to Lagos because the initial plan wch he signed up to was to get freedom for the East from Nigeria, and not to match all over Nigeria. Technically, he was right because of the resources they had. If Ojukwu had listened to him, Benin would have been in Biafra today, and not in Nigeria. Biafra would have stood.

Banjo was an Ijebu, he was reluctant to match past Ore, in Ondo state. Ore would have been easy for him, at least compared to Benin and the fact that Ore is quite solitary. But after Ore would have been Ijebu.
So why go farther when you already have what you wanted and needed. Biafra having Benin was over jara sef.

Why invade West, when you already have your East and can secure it against the North? I guess these were Banjos thoughts and that was all Biafra needed.

Awolowo was from Ikenne. I guess he decided to stand up with Nigeria (against Ojukwu even after assuring Ojukwu initially) when Biafran troops were close to Ore and Oguns state, Awolowo's land. Otherwise, the Yorubas had nothing much to gain or loss in the whole issue ab initio. Not until Ojukwu foolishly decided to go against Banjos advice, Biafra was making exploits.

Why was Ojukwu bent on going over the West to Lagos. He could have stood with the Biafra he wanted, and not match over the West. Was he thinking Awolowo and the Yorubas , after giving him his word would stand and watch him invade the West and take more than he requested for ( freedom for the East)?

But then majority of youths know little or nothing about the truth and the folly of their leaders, even before the war...i mean the senseless coup, the tauting and the lack of zeal to make amends after the biased coup.

You don't really know the meaning of coward bro!

Igbos against all odds, without any preparation fought against all the Nigerian tribes + Britain + Russia + Egypt + other British allies for 2 and half years, and even marched close to the then Nigerian capital Lagos before they retreated which was why Col. Banjo and Ifeajuna were executed for retreating and not taking over Lagos as planned by Biafran commanders.

No other tribe in Nigeria can dare this feat.....this is why Hausa/Fulani fear Igbos a lot...they know what Igbos can do when worst comes to worst.....Fulani herdsmen are just forming James Bond by sneaking in the middle of the night when unarmed children and women are sleeping and murder them and form strong people....let them formally declare war and watch if they won't be wiped out under 1 week!

Boko Haram, Fulani Herdsmen and all other militant groups are all cowards...they target unarmed people and they fight and run the ragtag way....they can't stand full war....if they disagree let them formally declare war and see how it goes.

Let there be a former war declaration so all Igbo men and women will stop their business and know that war has come, then you will see the full wrath and power of the Igbo nation.

Nigerian soldiers killing unarmed IPOB members who are mostly vulnerable youths without any ammunition does not show brevity on the side of the Nigerian army, declare war and watch who will win and who will loose....only Igbos fought against all other Nigerian tribes in 1966 and held the war for over 2yrs, that was then o, imagine now, I pity you sha.

Don't ever call Igbos cowards in your life again if you don't know what cowards mean, look at FULANI HERDSMEN that kill only unarmed children and women at midnight when they are sleeping and they do it and run away, those are the REAL COWARDS!
All these epistle of self appraisal doesnt change the subject matter, igbos are cowards!!! almost doesnt kill a bird, u were defeated by a superior force deal with it. Next time, dont go to a war based on emotions without adequate preparation

Some kids who couldn't comprehend the event are here shouting betrayal..... Banjo and Co where given orders to invade n take Nigeria, they succeeded in taking Benin n went on to take Lagos the capital of Nigeria..... In the middle of a successful invasion they stopped abruptly, turned back and returned to biafra. What do you expect their boss Ojukwu to do, applaud their unexplained madness? They were soldiers who chickened out when they were needed most so that is sabotage and they paid for it like they should.... Period.

You can grab any neutral Nigerian civil war account book written by foreign journalists or google how Nzeogwu died, he was never captured.

Nigerian soldiers didn't and couldn't capture him. His battalion was ambushed yet they couldn't capture him alive and even after he was killed in combat, the Nigerian soldiers respected his corpse and order from top military command came that his corpse be brought back to Kaduna where he was born and grew up for proper military burial.

You sound very intelligent and informed, kudos. I love arguing or interacting with informed adults like u not some of the kids that just form history from their nursery books.

But you know, without capturing the capital of the nation you are fighting with, you haven't won the war

Ojukwu wanted Banjo and Ifeajuna to capture Lagos so they can as well have more access to Nigeria's military wares or arsenal which were mostly concentrated in Lagos and Kaduna then, that was the plan...to capture Lagos so Gowon can relocate Nigeria's government then to Kaduna and possibly make a national broadcast announcing that Biafra can go and have their freedom.

This was the plan....there was no intention to invade Midwestern Nigeria to take over, the target was to capture Lagos as an easy route to winning the war fast before foreign supports come for Nigeria which later came from Britain, Egypt, Russia, etc.

Biafra soldiers marching towards Lagos under the command of Col. Banjo and Ifeajuna were confused as to the reason why their commanders suddenly changed mind and told them to retreat back to Benin. Some insider soldiers close to Col. Banjo and Ifeajuna then revealed to Ojukwu that Col. Banjo had a secret meeting with Awolowo to carry out a coup in Biafra to overthrow Ojukwu and bring him to Nigerian government.

Now, while this ascertion could not be ruled out is this; Banjo had written several letters to Gowon explaining his innocence on the 1966 coup, but Gowon and his govt weren't convinced, reason they refused to free him before the civil war broke out and Ojukwu freed him.

So it was learnt that Banjo was only fighting for Biafra cos he had no choice since he would be arrested and jailed again or even executed by Gowon led Nigerian government if he had returned to Nigeria after he was released by Ojukwu, so he stayed in Biafra fighting with Biafra with hope of gaining freedom, but then, a sweeter offer came from Nigerian government through Awolowo promising him freedom + reinstatement into Nigerian army with promotion and all entitlements should he bring Ojukwu's head to Lagos; this part of the story came from insiders that were close to him and Ifeajuna during that war.

But notwithstanding, Ojukwu ought to have spared his life at least for the sacrifice he made for Biafra no matter his offense, Ojukwu was kind of wrong here I must admit. May Banjo's soul continue to rest in peace, we will never forget him, never and I am sure whenever Biafra comes, he will be honored

Now for those wondering why Britain also known as UK supported Nigeria against Biafra, this is the reason:

Britain was Nigeria's colonial master and it was barely 6 years they granted Nigeria freedom that the political crises began, which led to civil war.

Britain didn't want Nigeria to breakup because of their own selfish interest economic wise.

Nigeria just like every other nation colonised by Britain was under Commonwealth of Nations, controlled by UK, which was a very huge source of income to British government and economy, so allowing their youngest child Nigeria to breakup will inspire and encourage other aggrieved tribes in other nations colonised by Britain to also start agitation for freedom which will end up destroying British control over Nigeria and also destroy the Commonwealth of Nations that served the British interest.

So for this reason, Britain had to support Nigerian government with military weapons, machineries, soldiers, fighter jet pilots, military intelligence and what have u to ensure Nigeria win Biafra.

This is why Britain supported Nigerian government during the civil war.

To all those saying the 1966 coup was an Igbo agenda, pls read this publication on Nigerian national daily and u will see the names of all the military officers that participated in that coup and the military officers that foiled that coup:

Read here>>>http://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/04/intelligence-failed-nzeogwu/amp/

It was Igbo Military Officer that led the coup and it was also Igbo militsry Officers that foiled the 1966 Nzeogwu led coup.

Their mission was to install Chief Obafemi Awolowo who they believed would rule Nigeria better.

Let all Nigerians be aware of history so we can stop turning things upside down.

Who Killed Major Nzeogwu?

The Death of Nzeogwu

Nzeogwu had gone out on a reconnaissance mission in the Nsukka sector. He was travelling in an improvised armoured vehicle (known as a "Biafran Red Devil"wink that had been converted by the ingenious Biafran engineers from a Bedford truck. The vehicle was cumbersome despite its impressive ingenuity. The vehicle became immobilised and was surrounded by federal troops of the 21st battalion at a roadblock near the University of Nigeria Nsukka campus. The troops were led by Captain Abubakar Gora, and they opened fired on it. The vehicle's improvised armour withstood their bullets until it was attacked with the fearsome 106mm recoilless rifle which pierced its body. Ironically, the 106mm recoilless rifle was the same anti-tank weapon that Nzeogwu and other soldiers used in January 1966 to attack and destroy the official lodge of the Sardauna of Sokoto.

At this point, the accounts diverge.

However Major-Generals Mohammed Shuwa and Abdullahi Shelleng (who were not present when Nzeogwu was killed but saw his corpse) claimed that while being fired on, Nzeogwu jumped out from the vehicle, shouted in Hausa and identified himself as Major Nzeogwu but was shot dead anyway. Ojukwu's mixed race half brother Tom Biggar was also killed along with Nzeogwu. Biggar was the child of Ojukwu’s mother after she divorced Sir Louis Odumegwu and married a European named Biggar.

Nzeogwu's corpse was identified by Lieutenant Abdullahi Shelleng who ordered that it should be stored firstly in the University of Nigeria campus at Nsukka. However, by the time Shelleng arrived, Nzeogwu's eyes had been plucked out in what appears to have been a ritual mutilation. According to Shelleng the soldier who shot Nzeogwu was ironically Nzeogwu's former batman. The corpse was later sent to 1 division headquarters in Makurdi where the 1 division commander Colonel Mohammed Shuwa informed the head of state Major-General Gowon. Despite the fact that Nzeogwu was now technically an enemy soldier killed in combat against the Nigerian army, Gowon ordered that Nzeogwu's body should be flown to Kaduna and buried with full military honours – even as the war raged on in the Eastern Region.

Even in death, Nzeogwu was still respected by federal and northern troops. Domkat Bali referred to him as:

“a nice, charismatic and disciplined officer, highly admired and respected by his colleagues. At least he was not in the habit of being found in the company of women all the time messing about with them in the officers mess, a pastime of many young officers then….we believed that he was a genuinely patriotic officer who organised the 1966 coup with the best of intentions who was let down by his collaborators….If we had captured him alive, he would not have been killed. I believe he probably would have been tried for his role in the January 15 coup, jailed and probably freed after some time. His death was regrettable.”

Posted above is the account of how Nzeogwu was killed but another unnamed northern soldier who loved Nzeogwu said Nzeogwu killed himself when he saw that there was no escape for him.

Read the last part of what I posted and u will see that Nzeogwu didn't carry out that 1966 coup in the interest of Igbos, he did it hoping to remove all the corrupt and nepotic leaders then, example:

1. Tafawa Belewa
2. Nnamdi Azikiwe
3. Sardauna of Sokoto
4. Akintola Williams

His preferred leader was a Yoruba man, Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

But Yoruba history rewriters won't tell u people this part so u guys can keep hating on Igbos for no justifiable reason and despite that, Igbos keep excelling cos their hands are clean of your wrong accusations and assumptions.

Awolowo, a civilian told a colonel who graduated from sandhurst to start a war armed with machetes and clubs?
Awo must have been like a god to him. Of course your story is all bullcrap.
Everything the Igbos do,show foolishness and one begins to see why it took them such a long time to learn how to wear clothes.A civilian straight from prison told you he would fight against armed military personnel and they(biafrans) foolishly took his word hook and sinker because Awolowo was a god and his Yoruba people who were very scanty in the army then were supermen who without amunitions, will jump into a war fighting with their blockoss. No wonder an Igboman said Igbos are the most foolish humans in the world..lol

I beg to differ.
Firstly, Awo never had such interest in taking over anyone's region. If anything, he is well known as a regional-nationalist. His early tussle with Zik, the famous cross-carpeting, attests to this. Awo is a man of "Keep your house clean, I keep mine clean, together, we keep the community clean". I believe if only Ojukwu defended his territory, built bridges with neighbouring lands and consolidated his hold on Benin and other areas won,(this would been cheaper for him) Biafra would be today, probably, Awolowo too might have held on to his word of seccesion...but then, Ojukwu moved westward. I'm still to understand if Ojukwu actually wanted to seccede his small region or take over the whole country?

If at all Major Banjo and Awolowo, both who as at then, were not in the good books of ruling govt, actually decided to take such daring and stupid move to met and plan to have Ojukwu's head and the East, I can say that Ojukwu's head would have been in Lagos before anyone from the East heard of such, considering that both men are political and millitary strategists. Both men had nothing to gain with such move. Till date, Awo nor the West never had vested interest in the East. Yorubas rarely moved eastward pre and post war.
If Awolowo had issues with any region then, it would have been the North. The fact that the North was using its landmass to the advantage of others was Awolowo's problem with them. History has it that Awolowo was always in the opposition and jail because of that undue landmass advantage of the North. It was even said that Awo reached out to Ojukwu.. but did Ojukwu inform him of his plans to march south west? Ojukwu's undoing was not thinking over why his victory machine Major Banjo decided to turn back.
Banjo had choices. After writing letters to Gowon as you claimed....the best for him would have been to fight for Nigeria to prove his faithfulness, patriotism or sobreity, or return home. He chose to fight for Biafra because he thought the East could have their freedom.

Secondly, If truly Ojukwu wanted to march over the West to Lagos, just to sieze military gains... Then that was his undoing. Clandestine infiltration, aerial attacks, Ondo/Ogun coastline, etc should have been better excuses. How did he think he would seat in Nnewi and Banjo and his colleagues would walk straight into the seat of power, moving far away from the region you want freedom for?.
Instead of him to have a strong footing in his region, win more neighbouring lands and won teritories, curry favours and alliances with neighbouring lands. He would have had access to the coast through Delta, more food and able bodied men in the South south and Middle Belt and consolidate his base. I'm sure he killed Major Banjo for giving him these advices.

You talked about Ojukwu winning the war before Britain, Russia and co came to help...How and with what were you winning? Winning Asaba and Benin with the help of Banjo? I must tell you that such were the ego brushing fairytales your fore-fathers told to feel good about themselves. Nigeria never wanted such stupid loss of lives, Ojukwu begged for it when he advanced past where Banjo and Ifeajuna turned back.

The mercenaries helping Ojukwu were just being mercenaries... there for the money and gains. Some of them were South Africans who knew nothing about sociopolitical strategies. They couldnt have done any better. The UK did not support Biafra because what is there for them to support. The French was only using Ojukwu for thier own self reasons.

The truth is bitter.... Igbos would rather blame the people in Aburi, Ghana than accept that they messed the whole place up. How they particularly think the Yorubas betrayed them is the mystery no one can solve

I believe Victor Banjo was a victim of circumstance.. Ojukwu used him cos he was in an Eastern prison at that time.

What if he wasn't there? Biafra would have fallen even before the start of the war.

This should teach other Yorubas forming detribalized a lesson.

Aguyi Ironsi after a successful Igbo planned coup detained an innocent Yoruba man Victor Banjo (most likely cos he wasn't in support of their coup) but left others like Nzeogwu, the real killers alone.

The same Yoruba man was used by the Igbos to prosecute a war only to kill him later after Ojukwu felt threatened and probably got jealous of the fearless Yoruba warrior.

Thank God for gallant Yoruba soldiers like Benjamin Adekunle (may your rugged soul rest in perfect peace), Obasanjo and the others that stopped invading biafran soldiers at Ore.
They saved the Yoruba race from slavery to Igbos.

Only bastards from Yorubaland will champion any biafra course again, not with the level of division and hate the Easterners display towards other Nigerians.
God bless you.
Fajuyi Adekunle died defending Ironsi. No Igbo man can lay down his life for his family not to talk of a Yoruba man.
We know the real cowards.

Backstabbers paid his goodwill back by murdering him. And the same coward that gave the order ran out of the country wearing woman dress when it was time for him to die for what he believed in. No wonder they shamed him by rejecting him at the polls when he contested for the senate. And no wonder everyone abandoned him towards the end of his journey in life. You reap what you sow.

I tell people that no one has been more loyal to this country than the yorubas. Sergent Akinfehiwa died protecting his boss Murtala Mohammed, Adekunle Fajuyi died cos he said he would died first if those soldier are bent on killing aguyi ironsi , they disnt come for him. Cornel Banjo was killed by ojukwu.

You sound informed but you have this tribal sentiment in your undertone.

1966 coup was never an Igbo agenda as acclaimed by Southwest history rewriters.

Read the article on that link I posted above, names of some of the coupists are mentioned therein.

Nobody said Awolowo had any interest in Southeast or then Eastern region, what we are saying is that after he joined Nigerian side in the civil war, he masterminded lots of plans to end the war in favour of Nigerian government which nobody can blame him of.

Yes in war, commanders make mistake and miscalculation, the great Adolf Hitler who almost captured the world also made a mistake of miscalculation, yet, Adolf Hitler remains a known warrior in the history of mankind, same applies to Ojukwu, both of them held a larger part of the world in a long battle to the surprise of war historians and military analysts.

Major point is and remains, the 1966 Major Nzeogwu led coup was never an Igbo agenda and it was executed by Nigerian soldiers drawn from Igbo, Yoruba, Urhobo, Efik, Bini, and even Middlebelt, including Abacha.

They coup would have been a success if not for Igbo military officers that stopped Nzeogwu, they are:

1. Maj. General Ironsi
2. Col. Ojukwu
3. Conrad Chukwujimje Dibia Nwawo (NA 10),
4. Alexander Attah Madiebo
5. Major Alphonso Keshi.

These officers stopped the Nzeogwu coup and they are all Igbo military officers so where is the Igbo agenda here

How did they foil the 1966 coup

Brigade Major, 2 BDE Kaduna, Keshi informed Madiebo of the coup. Madiebo moved over to the Brigade Headquarters where Nzeogwu had taken over Ademulegun’s seat and worked on Nzeogwu. Ojukwu, Commanding Officer Third Battalion, Kano stood his ground strategically and all worked with Ironsi to fly in Nwawo, then Defence Attaché in London, and Nzeogwu’s teacher. Only then could Major Nzeogwu's heart be softened.

All the none Igbo military officers were so scared of Nzeogwu, no none Igbo officer was bold enough to challenge Nzeogwu.

Major Hassan Usman Katsina, Inspector of the Recce Squadron in Kaduna was confused. Lt. Col. Yakubu Gowon ‘ s contribution from Lagos was for Madiebo to ask the doctor to sedate Nzeogwu, a man who was in full control of Kaduna.

The man that should have made a broadcast after the January coup was Ademoyega, a Yoruba. Their plan was to release Chief Obafemi Awolowo, another Yoruba from jail and make him Prime Minister.

The Army Chief would have been Lt. Col David Akpode Ejoor, an Urhobo. The young officer who secured radio Nigeria was Capt. Gibson Sanda Jalo.

Among those who took part in Exercise Damissa were subalterns like John Atom Kpera, Harris Eghagha, Sani Abacha, Bob Egbikor, Fola Oyewole and Olafimihan.

Of the 28 officers and men that followed Nzeogwu to the Sardauna’s house, 22 were non Igbo. Yoruba officers like Victor Adebukunola Banjo,Fajuyi, Olusegun Obasanjo and Oluchi Olutoye knew about the coup.

Nzeogwu did not believe in Biafra , was named Kaduna by his Northern friends and spoke Hausa more than Igbo.

See the below quote:
Major Nzeogwu the coup leader thought he could easily achieve his dream of a New Nigeria where tribe and tongue would not make any difference, where corruption would disappear and everyone free to enjoy the dividends of democracy.

Here lies the irony. The war came simply because some parts of Nigeria felt the January coup led by Nzeogwu was a grand plan by the Igbo to take over Nigeria. Thus the North paid back with a counter coup on July 29, 1966. Thousands of innocent Igbo soldiers and civilians were murdered.
