Nowenuse: Who go free make dem no use his/her language teach his/her children? The "larger regional" languages Na him wahala go start! Even the major languages. Will you use Ibadan Yoruba or Ekiti Yoruba or Abeokuta Yoruba to teach? What about the time you will need to translate words in English that don't have equivalent in Local languages? Especially scientific words. Especially when teaching organic chemistry in Local languages. Hmmm! Not just worth the trouble. Government should just enforce students passing at least one local languages. In fact, in Cameroon, to gain admission into tertiary institutions, one must pass Mathematics, French and English. We should include a local language as compulsory in ours. |

Nowenuse: DUDE, IT IS GOING TO BE YOUR FUNERAL. THE WHOLE THING IS SHORT SIGHTED AND FANTASY GONE WRONG. IN THIS DAY AND AGE, WITH ALL THE INFORMATION AND TECHNOLOGY, U THINK THAT IS POSSIBLE? I THINK THE ENTIRE NIGERIA WILL USE THIS TO THEIR ADVANTAGE AND START OCCUPYING VILLAGES IN SOUTHWEST AND CLAIMING INDIGENE. LAND IS A PRECIOUS COMMODITY AND VERY LIMITED. THE TINY YORUBA SOUTHWEST AREA WILL BE QUICKLY OVER POPULATED, WITH NO ROOM FOR EXPANSION. POPULATION GROWTH WITHOUT LAND EXPANSION IS WAR. WHOSE LAND ARE YORUBA GOING TO STEAL? IS IT DAHOMEY? NUPE? EDO? EBIRA? WILL U CREATE ANOTHER LEGISLATION TO COPY THE CHINESE ONE BABY/CHILD POLICY? |

mfm04622: 1) Is it efficient? No. 2) Can it be done in Nigeria? Absolutely. You are not considering the fact that, although there are 500 languages in Nigeria, people who speak these languages are usually concentrated in certain geographical areas and you are also not taking into account the number of people that speak some of those languages (there are many languages that are only spoken by a handful of people). It's not as if 500 languages are spoken in all the 36 states of the country. Although I was one of the people that was opposed to the policy in the 1980s, I have absolutely no doubt that Nigerian politicians and administrators can implement the policy if they want to and they can justify it too. Do you know the unemployment rate in Nigeria and the number of people that will be employed if the policy is implemented? Do you know the opportunity it will provide for Nigerian politicians to gain political capital out of this? Do you know how much, for example, Lateef Jakande invested in his free education policy (that was another policy that I had reservations about, but he did what experts said was impossible) ? Do you know how he created lots of schools and classrooms where there were none before? You don't even need to build many new schools and classrooms, what you need is proper time management using existing schools and classrooms. The private sector will be more than happy to produce the textbooks (based on guidelines provided by government). It means more business for them. States that provide mother tongue education can also receive funding from the Federal Government and international organisations that advocate for and support mother tongue education like UNESCO and Wycliffe (this was the case in Kenya and Chad). I have absolutely no doubt that Nigerian politicians and administrators can implement it if they want to. |

legitnow:lol see painment if it is as easy as just learning Yoruba to claim south west indigene what is stopping the people who already live in Yoruba land and speak Yoruba from claiming indigene. It’s very simple most people are proud of where they come from what u are saying is just ibotic nonsense derived from painment of the fact that u can no longer scream no mans land about Lagos coz the people who owns the land have taken a step regarding vultures to show it is indeed no mans land. What of imo and Anambra will the language law that made ibo necessary in school not move everybody to ur villages too if anybody even wants to, and claim indigene there and make u guys more overpopulated than u already are. My advice stop crying about Lagos and cry more for imo and Anambra because the scenario u describe will happen to u osu too lol 4 Likes |

legitnow: FYI I am not a yoruba person. I am from the middlebelt, born and bred in Delta state. I am just giving you the most possible case scenario. Take it or leave it. The yorubas are no fools to watch their heritage destroyed like that. They will take measures. 2 Likes |

mfm04622: The major regional languages have already been officialized, concluded and agreed on some time ago. I think they were only Kanuri, Ijaw, Tiv, Edo and Efik-Ibibio. All other minorities were expected to fall under any of these categories or make a case for their own languages (if they would be considered). As for the larger languages. Kano dialect of hausa has already and always been the official hausa dialect. Oyo yoruba the official yoruba dialect, while Igbo Izugbe the official Igbo dialect. All yorubas, hausas and Igbos are educated in these 3 official dialects irrespective of which ever subgroup they hail from. 1 Like |

Thetruthsayer10: Nothing Wrong with claiming if they change their names to Fashola or Ambode and their children are called Bola and Seun then it is fine in 3 generations who would remember. There are already many such families in Lagos e.g the returnee slaves and also Tapa families in Lagos as well as Edo families or some Muslim names like Lawal,Shittu etc. The key issue is INTEGRATION. It does not matter your origin as long as you integrate. Integration entails having a name that fits in even if it is not Yoruba like Oshodi,Gbadamosi(Badmus) Adams,Williams,Sanusi,Bello but not names like Okoro or Chinedu 3 Likes |
